There tailoring service is very common over there (you can find one on almost every street) and its very cheap. When she moved to Birmingham with me, I think one of the first things she asked me was if there was a place she could get her clothes adjusted. I honestly could not answer, it's not the sort of service I've ever really needed before. While mooching around the Indoor Market in the city centre we found City Tailoring. Prices might not be as cheap as in Brazil, but it is still pretty cheap, certainly not as expensive as I thought it would be. To shorten legs, for example, it will cost £7. They even fix leather jackets, I thought this would be much more expensive but it only costs around £15 to shorten the arms. It's not only shortening they do, they take care of all kinds of alterations, fit new buttons and zips, reline jackets they even make curtains. It's all really cheap and the guy there is a nice fella. There is a quick turnaround and they always look busy. Looks like a good place for any basic tailoring needs!

A man named John was very busy but yet really helpful and went out of his way to take his time and efforts to tailor my playsuit jn time for my for my night out on the same day for my birthday. So worth it! I'll be going back in future. Thanks John.

You can see a seamstress or two working away at the back of the shop. I've never had a dress altered there since I don't own or wear dresses, but what makes this shop interesting to visit is that recently it has started doubling up as an self-titled 'Indoor Car Boot Sale'. There is a baffling array of bric-a-brac, toys, books and clothes for sale that make it look like the store room of a charity shop. You'll need to dig amongst the organised chaos to find anything, but it's a nice place to go hunting for an oddity. My son likes to mooch about in here and often finds a small toy or some other thing that he likes the look of, and these can be picked up for a few pence.

At first glance the dress shop is exactly what you would expect, a shop which deals with the…read moreselling of and alteration of beautiful women's dresses. However, on closer inspection of this Raddlebarn road business there is far more than meets the eye. Inside there are all sorts of strange knick knacks which appear to be the kind of things more akin to a charity shop or perhaps some sort of bric a brac sale. If you look hard enough there's always something pleasing and the novelty of the whole experience makes a visit to the dress shop quite unforgettable. There can't be too many stores around doubling up in this manner so for that reason alone this place is worth a look.

City Core

I hate buying clothes. No, really... I hate clothes shopping. I can't stand the act of not being…read moreable to find something I like, then finally finding something and it being in the wrong size or the total worst... FINALLY finding something that I love, and it breaks. I was in this conundrum before Swingamjig festival. I have a fabulous 1950's swing dress (which I have worn to death), but sometime last year the zip just disintegrated. Now, it was a fairly old and very well loved dress, so it's not a surprise - but I was devastated. But what to do? I have used a couple of places in the City before but found them to be very expensive for something as simple as fixing a zip. I remembered a recommendation from Joanne D. (she got her bag fixed by these guys) and took my beloved dress down to Piccadilly arcade. The tailor's is on the top end of the Arcade (closer to New Street than Stephenson Street) and has clear signage. It looks like a bit of a jumble sale inside (with garments everywhere and a sewing machine on the counter), but this is probably a sign of their popularity in the City. I popped in around 11am to see what the damage would be for the dress. I was greeted with a warm smile and welcomed in to the store. I handed the offending garment over to them and they had a brief look. I was offered a replacement zip service for £8 (which really isn't bad) and told it would be ready the next day (in time for the festival). Feeling very relieved, I paid in advance and left it there. I actually couldn't get back the next day (busy times), but popped in the day after to collect. You honestly wouldn't know it had been fixed! They managed to pop in a very strong replacement "hidden" zip which is even better than the original one! The staff seem to really know what they are doing, service is friendly, prices are very reasonable (I remember Jo saying they fixed a zip on her bag for £3) and I was very pleased with the work they had done. If you have a garment in need of a bit of TLC, you could do far worse than popping into Top Tailors and seeing what they can do.
