My 3-month-old Mido Big Date, purchased from Jomashop, suddenly stopped working. Every time I wound the crown, the balance wheel would spin like a helicopter blade. Unfortunately, Jomashop's so-called 2-year warranty was a complete joke--way too many exclusions to be useful. Based on this experience, I would never buy a watch from Jomashop again. I took the watch to a large jeweler/watch store in Walnut Creek and was quoted $600, which felt like a total ripoff. I didn't want to do this but I feel I have to warn others. This business owner is dishonest. I retained him in February 2025. He actually came to our home to repair our grandfather clock. He said we needed some parts. He would source them and be in touch. We paid him $80 by Zelle. This is when it all got very strange. My bank contacted me weeks later and said The Watch Repair Guy never accepted my Zelle payment. I'd never heard of this before. After using Zelle ever since it first started. Once you send a payment, that's it. It's done. Apparently sometimes it requires the receiver to somehow accept the payment. According to Wells Fargo. Being an honest person I contacted Richard right away and notified him of the issue. I offered to send the money again or bring him cash. As I expect to pay for the services I receive. He said, not to worry. I can pay him when he finishes the job. He added that he's extremely busy and would be in touch. I'll add that every time I've ever communicated with Richard, he always says he's extremely busy and it's not a good time to talk, text or work. Well after months of not hearing back, I reached out again to follow up. Asking if he would indeed return to fix our clock, please? He never returned. He never called or texted back. It's now almost September 2025. I think we've waited long enough. This person told me multiple lies. I accept Zelle payment. I found the pieces for your clock. I will return. I will fix your clock. I will contact you back. Recently I was referred to a watch repair person. I texted them. Only to realize I had texted Richard again. After sending the text and seeing the number was already in my contacts. He first replied, I'm too busy to speak now. Then I told him who we are and were already expecting a call back from him. Months ago. Needless to say, we never heard back again. It's enough to make one feel crazy. If you enjoy wasting lots of your precious time, this is the guy for you. If you like being lied to and led on for many many months, you have found the right business. If you like feeling absolutely baffled and left wondering why you can't pay someone to finish what they've started, you'll enjoy working with Richard. I cannot understand what would make anyone operate their business this way. But you can go down to Bill's Ace Hardware in Concord and ask Richard yourself if you are genuinely curious.I prefer to get things done and keep it moving. Richard is the man! Finally got around to dropping off a few watches to replace some batteries. My last watch repair shop closed during COVID and I've had this place bookmarked for a while. After I found his shop within my local Ace Hardware, Richard quoted me 10 minutes but I had some other errands to do so came back in an hour. The final total was $51 and included the 3 batteries and a replaced gasket in my Shinola watch. He's super efficient and the price was right. I'll definitely be back! While my first time, it looked to me like he had the the appropriate tools, workflow, and expertise...it's the little things you notice when you've been messing with watches for years. I own a Seiko 5 watch that was given to me by my mother in 1969. I wore it for about 6 years then the band broke and I put it in a drawer until now. I found an identical watch on ebay and i swopped over the movement and case back (because of the date code on the back).
