I have difficult curly hair, so it is very hard to find someone skilled with layering & other techniques who doesn't leave my hair looking like a bell shape. Finding a good hair stylist is easy, but finding one who also cares is rare. NARGIS is a great master of her craft - she is especially amazing with highlighting hair...and how to cut your hair to make the best use of the highlights! I showed her pictures of the look I wanted but knew the look in the picture might not work since my face shape and hair texture are different from the picture. She was very diplomatic when advising on what she could do to to help achieve the same look but more tailored for me. She is also very gracious when giving advice on how to keep your hair healthier. I found this place on Google I was in the area and wanted to get my hair trimmed so I walked in to see if they take walk-ins, I was excited that they did and took me right away. I had about a half inch trimmed off the bottom on dry hair (no hair wash and dry) I was in the chair less than 20 mins when it was time to pay it was $80.00, I wanted to push back but I needed to leave for a client appointment this was the most expensive trim I have ever gotten. I got my hair cut here about six weeks ago and am disappointed with the cut and the experience. I felt like the stylist didn't really listen to anything I said. Early in the cut the stylist mentioned that I should get highlights. I declined and said that I actually really like my hair color. She then brought it up again a few minutes later, but in greater detail about how and where and why. I declined again and explained that I still really liked my natural color, and that I swore off coloring my hair back in 2004 and prefer how my hair feels when it hasn't been processed. I no way was I coy. I said no, and gave reasons. She brought it up yet again, and again I declined. I know they're supposed to sell additional services, and maybe they've been coached in how to overcome the "no," but it was such a creepy hard sell that I will never go back. She didn't respect my opinion about my own head. She seemed to try to make me feel like my brown hair was unattractive so that I would buy her expensive, continual upkeep highlight process. In the end I ended up with a boring cut and a really bad taste in my mouth. read more

Based on a few recommendations of friends, I gave The W Salon my business. It was such a nice experience. I phoned to get an appt with Carrie and was excited to get one within a day. Upon arrival, I was greeted and offered a few drink options. The location is bright and clean. Carrie gave me an honest consult and we started with partial highlights and a dark color covering my gray streaks. Yikes, those streaks show my age. After the color, she listened to my whoas and suggested a simple cut. The shampoo staff member was amazing. My 3 hour visit was relaxing and I loved my simple color process. It was easy to get an appointment as I needed it the next day. Always confirm what price (based on the stylist level) you'll be paying so you won't get any surprises. I supposedly had a "master" stylist and I have to say it was really expensive for a men haircut. Given the premium price, I expect premium service, but that was not the case. Nothing was "premium" about this place. You'll notice the fluorescent light, standard furniture - did not look like an upscale place. Now, the stylist who was supposed to be a master. It felt like it was the first time she cut a guy's hair. She asked how I wanted my haircut, which was good, but she repeated same questions several times. She used the razor most of the time and did not cut the way I wanted even though she asked me many times. She also tried to hard sell their products a lot. After the cut, I was sent for shampooing. Since it was supposed to be an upscale place, I expected a good hair wash and scalp massage. Again, it was not the case. The shampoo lady washed my hair faster than I wash my hair at home. I will not be returning to this place. I expected it to be better, more upscale, more skillful stylist, and better overall service for what I paid. read more

I went in for a 1 hr massage about a month ago. it was good the only complaint was that the massage therapist smelled like nicotine. His hands smelled of cigarettes and the smell bothered me. He asked questions about what I'd like, the level of pressure was good and he changed the pressure as needed. He was friendly and gave me privacy when needed (to dress etc) and knocked when he was coming in. He did a great job. This is in a strip mall, so don't expect spa like relaxation or quiet time. I used a voucher I bought on-line, so the service was worth the discounted price, but I would not say it would be worth $100 as advertised. The staff up front was nice, brought me tea and made sure I was comfortable. I would not go back there again. Nothing special! read more

Update: I went back today! I am 100% onboard with the salon experience and plan to come back every few months! I did get an extra conditioning that my dry hair needed from this weather! Neesha did my wash and it was so relaxing and soothing and made me feel great. Carrie did my partial and haircut and she is a genius! She really takes her time to get it right! I part my hair to the right and she made sure that even if I changed it up it would still work for me! My hair looks and feels amazing and I am so happy again with the way it turned out! I had never been here before and couldn't have been made to feel any more welcome and relaxed. I had a color and cut and was not too sure on what I wanted but Carrie Crowell who works at The W Salon did my color and cut and made sure I left very pleased! Carrie was very friendly & helpful and I absolutely love my color and new style of hair! She is a military wife who recently relocated to Burke, VA. I like to support military and heard about her from a few friends. She just did my hair and it looks FANTASTIC! I highly recommend her and the salon. I was able to get a beautiful layered cut and hi-lights has never felt so fresh and healthy! Carrie was also clear about price ahead of time and it was on point. They didn't over charge and it was really affordable for a nice salon and because of that it made it easy to leave a nice tip too:) Carrie really worked magic on my hair and we had great conversation too! I am not typically a salon person but I am excited to go back. There is also a Starbucks next door so grab a drink before heading in to your appointment. Because I got my hair colored they washed my hair and it was with really good product! You can tell it is high quality shampoo and conditioner. First experience with The W Salon and will not be going back. I called this past Friday to make an appointment for my 4 year old. They were able to get her in the next day. Before calling, I checked online for their fees and a children's haircut is listed at $15+. I asked the receptionist about the fee and she also confirmed with me it would be $15 and didn't specify anything else. We get there a little before her appointment and are taken back for the shampoo 10 minutes late, which isn't a big deal to me. We are seated and our stylist doesn't get to us until another 20 minutes later. Luckily my daughter is very patient and was just very excited to get her hair cut. The stylist is apologetic, friendly and does not rush at all which I appreciated. The stylist, whose name I didn't get, did a great job. That's the only reason I gave 2 stars. At checkout I was told my total was $55. When I asked why, the receptionist let me know the cut was $45 and the conditioner was $10, which I was adding on since I only expected to pay $15. I explained the fee online and my phone call just the day before also confirming the amount I was told when scheduling. She pulled out a little flyer at their front desk which showed the fee for a kid's cut to be $25 or $26. Again, I was not informed of that price either. So now the stylist comes to the front and explains she's a senior stylist and charges $45 but the best she can do for me is take $10 off. At this point, I'm beyond angry and just want to leave with my daughter so I paid and left. This was my first experience, never been there, wasn't sure what to expect. I trusted the fee information I was given to be accurate. The receptionist should've known the stylist my daughter was being booked with was a senior stylist and whose fee was $45. I have worn a hat and olive oil for six months after having my hair done by Denise at W salon when I told her how brutal breakage and damage was to my hair, I couldn't even comb it out she told me that for only 350 dollars she would fix my hair with a Brazilian blowout. I felt pressured to spend a lot of money. I like having curly hair. I do not like having pyramid head, triangle hair, or any other version of the abomination of this bad, curly haircut. Lauren, the curly hair ninja at W Salon, will not give you triangle hair. I found Lauren on Yelp a year or so ago when she was at her previous salon near Dupont. I brought her a few pictures of styles I liked and asked her, in her expert opinion, if they would work for my face shape and hair texture. She sat with me for a while before she started cutting and walked me through what she'd like to do based on one of the photos I'd brought. I liked that she understood the idea of what I wanted, and tweaked the cut to best suit my style and hair. I've let Lauren drastically change my hair style twice now. Each time I give her a few guidelines (I'm a runner, it has to go in a pony tail; I hate bangs) and trust her completely to give me a cut I'll love. She also does excellent color. My favorite thing about Lauren (to her dismay) is that her hair cuts grow out so well that I can come in seasonally. I usually plan to wait until my cut starts to look shaggy or messy, but so far it hasn't reached that point. I've gone as many as 9 months in between cuts and my hair always looked good. W is a bit out from D.C. but it isn't a bad drive. The salon itself is clean and the receptionist was very friendly. I would consider their prices pretty average, I paid $65 (before tip) for my cut. I have an odd schedule so I had to make an appointment two or three weeks out, but that was pretty much what I'd expected. Lauren is worth waiting for. If you have curly hair and don't want it to be a giant mess then go to Lauren at W Salon, she'll take care of you. read more

I have long hair and it's hard to manage. I have been going to Vidal Sassoon the past 12 years but decided to try something new so I made an appointment with Megan. She did a great job with my haircut and took the time to go over what she was doing and teach me how to manage my hair on my own. I never wear my hair curly and she's the only one who convinced me to actually like my curly hair. What I love about her is that she never rushes you out or tries to keep the tricks to herself so that you have to keep coming back. She is very genuine. I definitely recommend her. UPDATE: Unfortunately I did not have the same experience when getting color so I had to go to someone else for correction. I was not happy with my haircut and eyebrow wax. After reading all the reviews, I expected MUCH better than this! I've been looking for a salon that can get my eyebrows done the way that I want it (I've naturally shaped eyebrows) but I was not satisfied with any of the salons in my area! By the time I came here, my eyebrows were in a bad shape and needed someone to fix them. So, I told her the story and she unsuccessfully tried to fix it. When I didn't like what was done, she seemed a little impatient. I also got a haircut from the same person and she totally messed it up for me. She gave me a haircut that she liked for my hair, not the one that I asked her. Then when I asked her to fix it (after drying my hair-that is because she didn't asked me if I was happy with my hair-just assumed and started drying my hair), she cut a chunk of my hair (front) without wetting my hair (I've super straight hair). So, all together, I didn't look like a monster, but I was not happy at all. I called and asked them to give me the best that they have because I am looking for a salon that I can stay with them since I recently moved to the area. They told me, everyone here is great and we can't tell you who is the best!!!!! A haircut usually is a chore for me and W salon made it a pleasant ritual. I was in the are and thought it a good reason to visit this place that I had heard from friends today. Very neat and upscale in appearance. Nice welcome and the shampoo was almost like a massage of the head and very soothing. Nargis cut my hair and also provided me with tips on care. With tip I pad $33 probably a little over what I pay but definitely worth it. I see a lot of reviews on Yelp for a foot massage and maybe I will try that is I am in the are again or if they open more branches. Several people who were having a haircut at the same time seemed relaxed and happy which is a good sign. Now I need a place that does nails as well ;) read more

I had my hair colored purple and cut by Helena! i was kinda nervous bc i never had my hair color, let alone colored an unusual color, but she did an amazing job! i dont know much about hair, i just showed her pictures and she did exactly what i wanted. she asks a lot of specific questions to make sure you get exactly what you want. the whole process was really efficient and smooth, shes really nice and always asks if your okay throughout the process which is nice. if you wanna do any crazy colors (or normal colors haha) i def recommend Helena, she def knows what shes doing! + the place is nice! read more

I have been going to here for two years and have tried now five different stylists. First I had Lauren, and she was great but she was busy one day for a last-minute appointment so I tried Nargis. She was also very good. Then I had a second kid and it had been a long time since I got a haircut when Helena approached me inside Giant near the salon. She was starting there and gave me a discount to see her. I figured I'd go and get a discount at the same time. She was good the first couple times I went, but then I got a perm from her and I can't tell you how unhappy I've been since. I won't go into the whole explanation, it's long--and involves Helena almost re-perming my hair the next day which would have totally fried it off my head, but I will say Sue tried to help me out, for free, and gave me a great cut. The problem is my hair is still half-curly but mostly just frizzy--certainly not curly enough to look cute and not straight enough to look good without me spending 30 minutes-hour styling it every other day. With two kids at home it's hard for me to spend this much time on my hair and after what has amounted now to $135+ I am just annoyed. I am just going to have to resign myself to the fact that my hair sucks for the next six months and I wasted a bunch of money on it. Hopefully I can get this frizz out of my hair and have it at least look partially normal without having to spend 30 minutes-an hour on it, which probably means more money to buy even more product. End result, I think I'm going to try Tangles instead since I've heard so many good things from there. I don't think even though I got decent cuts from other stylists here that I'll be back--not just cause my hair is essentially ruined for a while but also because the cleanliness of the sinks and such are a little lower than I would like. She's consistently done a great job and she's knowledgeable about caring for hair of women 35+ yrs old.
