We waited 1 hours for a table, 10 minutes to order, then 15 minutes for water that my wife eventually went to get by herself, as we were too thirsty to wait any longer. We ordered artichoke spinach dip, bison and alfredo. After waiting 45 more minutes, our appetizer was still not served. It took 5 more minutes to get a server's attention who went straight in the kitchen and brought our appetizer back. The appetizer was cold (had obviously been seating in the kitchen for over half an hour) and disgusting. It's pricey, very poor service (handled by exchange students...I should have known better), bad food. We left leaving $5 tip on the table for "inconvenience". Will never go back. Covering up poor cooking with asparagus is a trend? Did they think I wouldn't *taste* raw meat if didn't see it under the vegetable? For the price point it looks like they can't get their prime rib done correctly. If it's a raw middle and a well done outside it's a cooking issue. Food was good, a little heavily salted for my taste. Filets were tender, 2 out of 3 hit the medium rare target while the third was medium well ...way outside the target. Prime Rib was cooked to perfection, a generous cut. Baked potatoes were not quite done. Vegetables and rolls were excellent. The restaurant was historically decorated, exactly as it should be for a restaurant and hotel over 100 years old. Service better than good but not excellent. read more

The space and atmosphere scream historic hotel, which is fun - especially if you are staying at the Occidental. We ordered a bottle of wine and the flat iron steak with chimichurri sauce and the truffle fries with asparagus. So good! We loved the food and the atmosphere, staff couldn't have been nicer. We were hoping to find something within walking distance of the museum but our first choice was closed on Wednesdays. The ambiance is charming, old west. I expect that this is the most expensive restaurant in Buffalo,WY. Their menu includes entrees from $25 to $55. Being on Eastern time still, we entered at 5:00pm and were the first patrons. Love this place. The food is excellent. The service is outstanding. The setting is in a 100 plus year old building. The building has it own vibe! Big meals the steaks are excellent. They have specials all the time. Lots of street parking , parking behind the restaurant. There is a public lot just north of building maybe 3-4 minute walk. The down side only open weekends. It's definitely the definition of "Fine Dining". The staff is excellent and the waitresses are the sweetest! I highly recommend getting the Elk Tenderloin with a side of truffle fries or truffle Mac n cheese. You will not be disappointed! They Elk will leave you wanting more the next day! We just visited Yellowstone and heard that The Virginian restaurant served Elk. We called ahead, booked a table, and asked if we could reserve two servings. The restaurant looks the part of an old West steakhouse. Steaks are quite pricey but Elk is rarely served so we were excited to partake. The hostess was charming and well informed. When the server showed up to take our order we told her we had called ahead and reserved Elk steaks. She replied that they had just sold the last two portions, but they had ribeye for an eye-watering price which was double what they listed on their Internet menu. We thanked them for their 'hospitality' and left. We ate ribeye at a steakhouse a block away for half the price. read more

Had dinner here as we are staying at the Occidental Hotel next door. On the plus side my husbands fettuccine with shrimp and scallops he said was good. I decided to splurge and get the elk tenderloin. I ordered it rare. It came out very overcooked and tough. I couldn't swallow it without a drink of water. I can't believe the kitchen sent it out like that. I sent it back and asked for another cooked as I ordered it. It took over 25 minutes to come out so of course my husband was done with his meal. I never saw a manager which I would have expected with a returned meal. The second order was much better than the first it had to be. Was it worth $55? Absolutely not! Service was good. read more

Greeter was semi friendly but we did not have reservations and restaurant was very empty but the groups with reservations seemed to get treated better and food came earlier. Waited 1 hour and 15 minutes on steaks. Very upsetting. Food was very good once it arrived. Broccoli was excellent. Bison and Elk steaks were prepared well. Salad was plain with dressing that was okay. Loaded mashed potatoes were very good. 4th and Main couple doors down was more recommended by locals but was closed on Thursdays. My grilled Caesar salad was heavy with mayo--since when does a Caesar salad have any mayo in it? My partner 's bison ribeye was unexpectedly tender, but honestly, there's a difference between al dente and raw string beans. Background music ranged from Traditional Irish acoustic to Irish tenors to Gregorian chants. Come here for the decor, but if you want gourmet food, go to the Winchester Steak House. Place seemed understaffed and undertrained. Overpriced. In reading the other reviews, and overhearing other diners, the owner doesn't seem to care--just catering to the ignorant tourists. Lots of cool ambiance. Nice linen table set up. Friendly, if inexperienced, server. Steaks start at $42 and were just ok, both the beef and the bison. Server dropped asparagus in my water and quite some time later brought ONE spear to replace it. Lemon risotto was a bit too citrus for my taste, but it was ok. Mac n cheese was good, but was an up charge of $4 that our server neglected to tell us about. Overall a mixed experience.... Go for the history. We had one night in Buffalo and decided to eat at the Virginian. We were not disappointed. My husband had a pasta dish and I had the salmon. Both were wonderful. I think the average rating is appropriate. When you charge $59 for a cowboy ribeye, $42 for a buffalo ribeye you better be spot on. Comparing this restaurant to other great steakhouses or places like the buckhorn exchange in Denver, Colorado, the Virginian is a step behind. First off this restaurant is located within the historic Occidental hotel, I would recommend spending some time enjoying a little whiskey in the historic saloon, before enjoying your meal at the restaurant. Having stayed at the Occidental, I felt the need to eat at this restaurant as it was rated Wyoming's most iconic restaurant in thrillst magazine. We ordered the cowboy ribeye, the bison ribeye, and the Buffalo ravioli. Each entree came with a soup or salad, the soup was a carrot ginger and the salad was a house or Caesar for an extra dollar. We ordered two soups and a salad wth apricot vinaigrette, both were good, specifically the soup. Their buffalo ravioli was wonderful, I would argue their most creative and genuine dish, it was really well put together, the bison ravioli was loaded with buffalo meat wrapped in fresh pasta along with cheese, cooked in reduced veal stock with pesto and a squash/carrot purée the dish was outstanding. Their buffalo prime rib was worth every bite, absolutely tender and delicious you can tell you are not eating beef, less fatty mild flavor absolutely enjoyed this dish. Now the most expensive dish on the menu the cowboy ribeye was below par. Compared to cowboy ribeye steak, I have had in Austin or Dallas, this ribeye was a joke, especially considering the ones in Texas were a third cheaper. They overcooked the steak and there was no seasoning to speak of. For desert we had a chocolate cake with cream on, which was quite good, but for the price it should be. If you eat here, I highly recommend the Buffalo, I have eaten this dish at other establishments and they did a good job on this dish. Their buffalo ravioli is fabulous, instead of the cowboy ribeye, I would order the elk, their is really one way to cook it medium rare and they probably do a better job making this dish. The folks who did not enjoy this spot must have been here on an off night! The appetizer, a Chinese potsticker, was the best I have eaten. Perfectly cooked it was served with a wonderful vinaigrette sauce. The garnish, a combination of very thin strips of carrots, cucumbers and fresh ginger added a wonderful spicy bite that left no after taste. The bread, arrived with the appetizer, and was warm and delicious. Hand blended whipped butter topped off thesis course. The entrees we chose were the salmon and a bison fillet. Both were superb! The salmon was cooked through and juicy. It came with a tangy lemon risotto that us wanting more. Both dishes came with a wonderful summer squash and vegetable medley. The bison was first rate. Tender and cooked as ordered! The sauce was excellent. The prices are higher, but definitely in keeping with the quality of the food. Our server was professional and courteous. She earned her tip. This was one of the best steaks I've ever had. It was spiced perfectly, cooked perfectly, and served artistically with asparagus and mashed potatoes. I had the creme brûlée for dessert and it was better than some of the ones I had in Europe. Our server was wonderful, knowledgeable and attentive. Definitely recommend this restaurant. read more
