Super cool & elegant cocktail bar hidden in wicker park! I had heard of the violet hour but definitely wouldn't have found the door if I wasn't with someone who had been before. It's super hidden and easy to miss! And the inside feels like a whole other world! Service was top tier. Both the manager and our server took the time to explain the intricacies of the menu and how to navigate it. Each cocktail has so many unique flavors and the menu ranges in boldness and complexity. We all got something different so it was so fun to try them all! I got the "All Yolks Aside" since I tend to love the texture of egg whites in cocktails. It was delicious! My favorite one was probably the "Matthew Bacconaugey" (the description is scary but it was so good!!). We also got the fries and olives to share. The olives were quite oily, the fries were yummy and kind of reminded me of five guys in the best way. A fun spot to try fancy drinks! Would definitely come back.

This place really cares about its cocktails. It's awesome how much they dedicate to making delicious fun cocktails. I also love their push to conversation and phone free times. Makes everything better! Fantastic with friends as well as a great date,

Peeked in this speakeasy on a late Wednesday evening. Heard some good things from others and thought to give it a go. While reservations are highly recommended, my friends and I came at just the right time. We were able to slide in before the place really got packed. I chose to order the mustache delight as it's their take on a root beer whiskey sour. I love whiskey and root beer - why not? Definitely strong but the flavor blend together seamlessly. Two of these and you'll be feeling just right. Cute dark sensual ambiance. It's quiet and the vibes are adult classy and respectful. Excellent customer service. Will be returning.

Very discrete and hidden entrance. If you didn't know that it was there you would easily walk by without even realizing it was a business. Very dim lit and moody inside which was awesome! The seating was unique with very large chairs so even though the tables are relatively close it feels very intimate at your own table. The cocktails were both very delicious and very spirit heavy which I personally enjoy! We decided to snack on a little dessert and got a cookie which was a nice little treat! I can't wait go back and try some more cocktails in the future!

One of the great things about reading on food/drink is when you are traveling and have the opportunity to visit the places you read about, and The Violet Hour was one of those places given from what I read in the Bartender's Manifesto which is a book of appreciation on the art form and experimentation of mixology. TVH does not look like anything but a mural from the outside as it was a former speakeasy. You can only tell to get in by the person standing outside the mural under a violet light. The ambiance is also really cool: dark, moody, and focused on socialization. If you are one to scroll on your phone, you risk being kicked out as one of their rules is no phone unless for pictures or looking at the menu... I loved the concept! The drinks were very experimental, and extremely tasty. Each of us in my party went for two different drinks which allowed us to share and taste a total of eight. I am a big whiskey/scotch guy, and my shout-out drink goes to their season "Wait, I'm a Star!". I have never experienced scotch in such a tropical infused way which blew my mind. If you are into drinks and experimentation, TVH is a must if you are visiting Chicago, and I will most definitely be back!

I had a bit of trouble finding Violet Hour as there are no signs. There's a door under the small lamp on the brick mural wall. The inside is beautiful. They have a happy hour from 5 to 7PM, but there are a limited number of drink options for $13. I ordered the el Diablo, which was sweet and refreshing. We also ordered the chorizo stuffed mejdool dates and warm crab dip. I will say that their drinks are much better than their food. The chorizo dates were decent, but the crab dip was very disappointing. Highly recommend just grabbing drinks here.

Love. Love. Love. We had a hard time finding it so that means it's an excellent speak easy! When I called they were so helpful and even stepped outside to find us. Greeted and seated in the bar with no reservations, we got lucky. Drinks amazing. Bartender very nice and friendly.

Very nice elegant speakeasy capture prohibition time with low lightning and privacy. A must for excellent cocktails and a pleaser for dates.

We started our visit to Chicago visiting this speakeasy! It wasn't labeled on the outside, but in true hidden bar fashion had a purple, violet, light above the door. The inside was understated elegance. The drinks were great, the nibbles were fun. Would recommend.

As far as places go to have a cocktail or a drink go, this place was good, however the place left is with a bad experience making it a place we don't want to go to again. We went there at 510 as we had a show to go to and wanted to leave by 615, so just a quick drink and a small bite before the show. When we got there we were asked if we had a reservation, which according to our friends who had been there years ago, it didn't use to take reservations there, so they told us for a party of 4 they had a table that they needed at 630, so we said, that's fine, we have to be out by 615 as we have to go to a show. We sat down and ordered 4 drinks and a few small things to eat. At 550 we asked to order a couple more drinks and we were told we couldn't cause they needed the table at 630 and also would see the manager looking at us the whole time waiting for us to leave. This honestly left is with a bad impression and the feeling that we never want to go to this place ever again. If you can't manage your tables right and test your patrons properly, I don't think you are a good place. Before the experience, I thought maybe we would go back, but now..

Beautiful place. Dim lights for relaxing ambience. Cozy seats and booths. Nice and pretty bar. Drinks were fun and creatively designed and tasted good. But the food was a bit disappointing. So this is definitely a place to enjoy drinks but not the food. The cauliflower w gochujang was thickly battered and the nuts were a bit overpriced. Outside of the snacks the drinks were fun! Nice staff. Bathrooms were super clean and well lit.

This is my favorite cocktail bar in the city. Great date night spot for the dim lighting and atmosphere. Drinks are strong and priced well. I love how they change up the menu too!

Ask the Community - The Violet Hour

Do they have any mocktails on the menu?

I believe they do. If they don't, you can always ask for one of the cocktails to be alcohol-free.

Will I be able to get in without a reservation?

I was able to get in without a reservation. There was just a bit more of a wait time but you should be good to go.

Do they implement the house rule of no phones?

It's an unfortunate necessity of modern life that the menu is a QR code or accessible through the website, so a device is recommended, although staff will help you find a cocktail to love if you can't or don't want to connect.…

How loud is the music here?

Moderate. You can hear it playing, but you can talk to your group without straining to hear them or yelling.

Are there any happy hour specials?

Yes in the description it says $13 classic cocktails during happy hour.

What type of music plays here?

I've only been there once and I've heard it varies, but when I was there on a busier night it was low-key hip hop with some Led Zeppelin thrown in?

Is this good place to have a meal? Are there vegan options?

They don't serve dinner here. Great cocktail but no dinner service .

    Are Friday nights good?

    Oh yes! Definitely, for sure!!

I know this sounds crazy but what if you don't drink alcohol- are there still non alcoholic options? I really would love to just come for the ambiance!

I agree with Fariha, they create very artisanal drinks there & should be able to remove the alcohol while catering to your tastebuds. They really are talented mixologist's

    What's the proper attire?

We were in shorts with a backpack and felt ok. Casual dress is fine. Everybody in line outside looked the same

Do you have to be 21 to enter? There are 3 of us that are 21 but my 20 year old friend wants to tag along and catch up with us while us 21 year olds have a drink?

21 and up and they check ID at the door.

    Is this a swingers bar?

    No

Imagine my shock when we didn't even make it past the bouncer because he was so rude, AS OTHER RECENT REVIEWS HAVE MENTIONED AS WELL! We had dinner nearby and walked to Bisous after, and saw there was a line of 5 or 6 people outside. We expected this as we knew Bisous is a first come, first serve bar. We were curious what the wait time would look like, so we approached the front door to ask a host or employee inside (we assumed there'd be a desk with an employee working it who could give us a wait time). We had no problem waiting, just wanted to see how long they estimated it would be! Before we could even fully open the door, the bouncer swung the door open from the other side and hit me with the door. I stumbled back a few steps and he looked at us and said, and I quote, "What do you want?". I laughed at first because I thought he was joking and putting on a tough guy act. He was not. We quickly explained we just wanted to see what the wait time was, and he said "don't you see there's a line outside?" We said yes, and explained we just wanted to know a rough estimated wait time. He just blankly stared at us while ushering us out. Both my boyfriend and I have worked in customer-service roles for a very, very long time. This encounter was not only extremely rude and unprofessional, but he also hit me hard enough with the door to send me stumbling back, and then said nothing about it and continued to address us in a tone that was nothing less than annoyed and irritated. We didn't end up going inside because that encounter left such a bad taste in our mouths. I don't believe in spending my money at establishments that don't treat their customers with the bare minimum respect they deserve! Bummed we didn't get to experience it, as I'm sure it was lovely inside and I can only hope the rest of the employees were much more kind and accommodating, or at least able to answer a simple question. Fire your "bouncer" (??) and hire someone with some basic customer service and communication skills!!

I ordered the horchata 2 ways cocktail which was $12 for haply hour and is typically $16. $12 is the highest amount for a happy hour cocktail that I have ever paid and I dont think it was worth it. The 1st sip was good but it was a very sweet drink and I was over it by the end. The drink also was half a very heavy cream so when you drank it you were drinking the liquid but not getting much of the cream. So you either had to lick the cream off the top or drink on the liquid and then either leave the cream or somehow scoop it out with your tongue so not really a well conceived cocktail. One of the fun and unique things about the bar is they bring out free tapas every once in a while similar to bars in Spain. They brought out edamame to the people at the bar right around 5pm and a group next to me asked at around 530pm if more tapas would come out and the bar person said the come out every 45 mins. I was there til around 630pm and another round of tapas never came out so do not expect that if you go. They did not give you water unless you specific ask for it which I though was odd, I heard 3 groups besides myself at the bar who had to ask for water, especially since this is supposed to be a nice cocktail bar and this is just one of my pet peeves but the water did not contain ice and was closer to room temperature which is not how I enjoy my water. Despite not being super crowded I had to ask for the check from 2 different people and it took 15 mins for them to bring it so if it is crowded I expect they will have pretty slow service. They do bring you a fortune cookie woth your check where you can potentially win a discount on your check or other prizes which is fun. Unfortunately the fortune cookie tastes a bit stale. I would say that this place is not worth it for happy hour but it had a cool but very dark vibe in there so it might be good for a romantic date depending on how good the food is.

With mixology being all the rage for the last 20+ years, I almost feel like it's hard to come up with a new drink concept these days. Truce shows that creativity in the world of booze is alive and well, and I count myself lucky to have had a taste. The 'Peas + Carrots' was a surprise win. Scotch, blanco tequila, sochu, carrot, snap pea, ginger, and kukicha. Sounds bizarre as hell, but it absolutely works. I also had a 'Final Say,' a spin on a classic featuring gin, clementine, fino, galliano, turmeric, black pepper, and lemon. The 'I Can't Believe It's Beer' has everything from mezcal and rooibos tea to guava and an aperitivo. I could ramble on about their menu, but I'd say just check Truce out yourself. You get what I'm saying. Their creative juices are clearly flowing, and they switch the menu up seasonally. They have some light bites too, but I really recommend them for cocktails and coffee.
