    The Vault from parking lot

11 months ago I added a review. First one! It was a new place. I figured they had some learning curves to figure out mostly in training employees and well I guess things have not changed. I've been there a half a dozen times or more in the previous year and every time has been just OK My biggest gripe is the service. There seems to be a bit of a training issue. Many times the servers do not know the menu, the drinks they offer, or some of the options like daily special. There may be great servers there, I may not have been lucky enough to be seated in their section. The lack of experience or work ethic in many of their servers really are a strike against the level of service. They're hoping to provide. It seemed as if many of the servers put in the minimum. They come get your order, either they drop it off or a coworker does. A little bit later if they come and say hey, how is everything. And then you get the check. Every time we've gone there, it's difficult to get a refill. I'm not talking booze. I'm talking soda or iced tea even water. If you don't get a refill when they come to check in you're not going to. The food does not live up to the dollar amount attached to it on the menu. It is just your average food at an elevated price. I get that everywhere is expensive these days but this place is even higher It is an interesting building with a very nice history. However, the decor is sparse. There is a series of plain tables with generic type chairs on half of the floor. There's some couches that felt a tad low for the tables. Plus there's not a lot to absorb the sound. The hard concrete floors, walls and windows make sound bounce around, so even if they are moderately busy, it can be very difficult to hear your dining companions. The view is great. How could you not like a water view. The round windows of the building give it a certain appeal. Honestly, the historic building and view are the best part of the dining experience at this restaurant. I don't understand why there are a role of slot machines in a place that's attempting fine dining. That doesn't really go with that type of establishment. There is plenty of other bars and taverns with those machines. It is not something you expect at a destination attempting to offer an elevated experience. I was truly excited when they first opened as this town really needs more places to eat. I really was hoping it would be a fine or even medium dining experience. Somewhere nice to take a date or family for special occasions. I was talking with someone the other day and they just said it's not even on their radar anymore. They expressed same concerns but said mostly it was the cost of the food for what you get. They were disappointed and aren't going back. I don't mean to be over critical. I'm just trying to be honest. I really wish they would straighten out these issues. This town really deserves a really good restaurant. It's a shame to have to drive to the neighboring cities to get a great meal.

I am a guest next door at the hotel and this is our first most likely last visit to Door county…read more Although if we were to come back we would definitely come back here. The hotel and the restaurant have been thoughtfully redesigned and renovated. I understand it was completed about two years ago. You can tell a lot of time and money went into updated 17 rooms and a restaurant so I can appreciate the dedication as small business owners. I also think it was very smart to make it dog friendly as I know from owning air bnb you will book twice as fast as if you don't. Any dogs we have encountered were well behaved and better than most kids these days. We went to the restaurant last night but had to sit inside because of the Canadian wildfires which I must say diminished the ability to enjoy the area and I'm sure they ended up with a lot of cancellations because the hotel was only about 1/2 full but the restaurant was doing a decent business. The restaurant was good. A few things a miss but overall I would return and may do so tonight if the smoke lifts to be able to enjoy the outdoors in JULY! My only criticism is if I ask for bread like a bread basket don't tell me you have one when you don't but still appreciate the effort. The bartender was very sweet and I would say the Alfredo was better than the bolognese because I got a pappardelle noodle when it said tagliatelle and the sauce was not a true bolognese and had a lot of big chunks of Italian sausage. Yes it was the chef's spin on it but was pretty tasty and I could tell homemade. The Wente Pinot could be improved upon but the brownie was outstanding. Chefs kiss. Give them a try and I think you will enjoy. Yes it's not in egg harbor but for us worked well because we're leaving for Milwaukee to see friends so being on the south side worked for us. The town itself isn't much and honestly if it wasn't for this hotel there wouldn't be anything for about 15 minutes in any direction for other food options. Kudos to the owners for turning around an old run down place and giving it new life! Your beds are comfy your lakefront is great and your efforts are clear.

Seemed to be a bit of a hassle for the hostess and owner but we got seated and ordered a drink. At 6pm on a Sat night one would think a place like this would be packed but only a few groups were seated and maybe about 12 people in the bar. When we left around 8pm Mathew was the only one left and enjoying a drink behind the bar. The food was excellent...our group had a range from prime rib to scallops to walleye. Some dishes could have been hotter/some of potato's were cold, but overall the food was spectacular. Salads very good as the beef soup. As we finished our meal, Mathew visited with one table of fellow old timer friends and asked for a fatty piece of meat off his plate, ate it, patted the guy on the back and walked off. The waitresses, particularly ours, Sam, were amazing. She was attentive and very sweet. The hostess didn't seem particularly interested, or pleasant, and seemed annoyed that we got there 15 minutes early when the place was about 20% full. She didn't seem particularly pleased when the 25% tip was added to the credit card instead of cash. It's a shame Sam probably has to split it with staff who don't deserve it. It's a shame that Matthew and his hostess are not more pleasant people because this place should be absolutely packed for the great food and stiff drinks as it well exceeds Wisconsin supper club standards by far in that area. 4.5 stars on the food. 5 stars for Sam. 0 stars for Mathew and his hostess.
