Waupaca, WI. I have to disclose I avoided Simpsons for years because I would look in the door on Main Street and it looked like a typical bar/supper club. Last year I noticed the outside patio seating and was a little more interested, but the supper club vibe still turned me off. This year we were kind of desperate in a hungry way and decided to try it. I was surprised at how big the place is and we were led beyond the bar to one of the dining areas. Sure the ambiance still shouts out "Supper Club"! This can be avoided by simply sitting outside on the patio if the weather permits. We tried both inside and the patio. Our indoor seats were all the way in the back so we were not affected by the close seating arrangement. I liked the somewhat more privacy this location provided. The patio dining is great, just enough chill in the evening air to keep the flies and mosquitos away. The service here is pretty awesome. Both of our servers on both nights were helpful and friendly. And I mean friendly in a genuine way, just like you are immersed in a small town diner where everyone knows everyone. Thanks to Teresa and Amy for your cheerful welcoming character, and your suggestions about the menu. Even the hostesses, who typically are very bored young women, were outgoing and friendly. Now to the reason we are here: the food. The first night I was near astonished by the quality of the food and the talent of the chef. Do they call him chef? Or does this person refer to themself as a "Cook"? This is Waupaca, Wi. A small town in the Midwest where there are no airs or strutting about the kitchen? Regardless of the semantics this person is a highly talented professional. A quick note about the portion size, as that is important to me: Very Large. In some cases huge. The food is so good it is difficult to save room for dessert. The menu is extensive, ranging from seafood to quality steaks and chops, (I really want to try a hamburger, but that decision was overruled by their specials) on both nights I went for the specials. One night it was swordfish tacos. I was expecting the usual small taco experience but out comes two giant sized and fully stuffed tacos that were filled with perfectly cooked fish, avocado, tomatoes and other good stuff. The heat level was perfect, the capsaicin levels were high enough to get my attention. Unusual for a Wisconsin restaurant to be brave and insistent enough to serve this . Very well done! The other special I tried was the prime rib, which covered my entire plate, and I ordered the small size! They slow cook their prime rib which is how I like it. It was tender, juicy and delicious with real shredded horseradish on the side. Here are some other highlights we tried: The meatball appetizer. These are served in a hot frying pan. There are four of them each nearly the size of a tennis ball and they are amazing. Wow! Caprese salad. A beautifully presented sequence of tomato and cheese slices with a wonderful dressing. I'm not sure, but the tomatoes tasted like homegrown heirlooms. Filet Mignon with Parmesan crust. OMG. The taste of this beef is extraordinary . I suspect they have an excellent source for their meats. The crust on the meat was a delicious touch, Potato skins. Excellent skins, and a lot of them, served with a great fresh ground garlic paste on the side. This garlic makes an appearance also at the beginning of the meal, served with the bread. It goes well with everything. Apple pie for dessert. Less than stellar, and disappointing when compared to all the other servings of the evening. I was expecting a flakey light crust because everything else was so spot on. Instead, said crust was dense, doughy, and saturated with the starchy pie mix. The syrup topping does not work either, it brings forth an overly sugared concoction. The apples did taste firm and fresh. So I had high hopes for this place to be a true supper club but to be honest it's not. I should have known by the fact it wasn't swarming with people by 5:30 that it wasn't going to meet our expectations. Sure you can enjoy a drink at the bar before dinner but that's about where the supper club experience ends. Take a look at the online menu before visiting because the prices are crazy. I think scallops and a small steak were in the $75+ range. The staff was friendly and attentive but unfortunately it didn't make up for this not being a traditional Wisconsin supper club experience. Where's the salad bar?? We both had the Haddock special that was $23 a plate. The fish was watery beneath the breading, no thanks. My salad and the rolls were quite nice. We both agreed we won't be coming again as there are much better places in the area for fish. read more

This is the second time in three months I have brought a dozen people, each time to your establishment and it has been the worst experience I've had. I thought the first time was just since I've been coming since 2008, but to me you are demonstrating this is becoming your practice and I choose not to continue! The wait staff continued to apologize for the kitchen send cold soup to three guests and my French onion was sent at the end of the meal burned blackened! This was not a comedy of errors, rather a sad case of not caring for your customers. Thank you for Simpson's years of quality service and food, but horrific food on two separate and consistent occasions requires no more tries. One star only for the staff. read more

Simpson's ; The prettiest place in town, nice and cozy. Beautiful fireplace and real food, made perfect. Simpson's , all you need is more customers. Once the word is out, everybody driving on that big highway to the west 110, and probably 49, are definitely gonna wanna trya' Simpson's meal, and there is a real good bar too with barstools. We looked at the reviews of restaurants for Waupaca, knowing nothing about the area - and liked what I saw on Simpson's. We had a great dinner there. Several choices of appetizers ranging from stuffed avocados, to crab rangoon, to truffle fries (very eclectic). Several choices of seafood and steak. if you wanted to splurge, could even do surf and turf. Beyond that there was chicken, a vegetarian choice or two, and ribs. And, of course, being Wisconsin, there were cheese curds. We found the seafood and steak to be phenomenal. We had the stuffed avocado and crab rangoon and loved it as well. Since we'd done a day of hiking, we splurged for some dessert of fruit pie (there were a few choices). Service was excellent. There were a few separate rooms, a bar, and seating for quite a few people. Highly recommend. Would go back in a heartbeat! And all for a reasonable price. read more

The interior of this establishment is spectacular with brick and herringbone wood walls, soft relaxing lighting accompanied by equally relaxing music, beamed ceilings, and white table cloth settings! The service here is outstanding! My friend and I were warmly greeted by the gentleman tending the bar the moment we walked in the door! We were then equally warmly greeted by our server and sat at our table within minutes! And our orders were promptly taken and delivered to us! The food was fantastic! We ordered the fried calamari, and veggie & goat cheese flatbread appetizers. Both were absolutely delicious! The flatbread was my favorite with spinach, mushrooms, black olives, caramelized onions, sun-dried tomatoes, tomato sauce, asiago & goat cheese! It was incredible! For entrees, my friend got a tenderloin steak with baked potato and pumpkin curry spinach soup, and I got a tenderloin steak smothered in onions and mushroom with a lobster tail, garlic mash, and a salad! Everything was delicious! And the steaks were seasoned and cooked perfectly! A restaurant doesn't stay in business for 88 years unless they are doing something right and this establishment is doing it right! We received a first-class experience! Spectacular! Amazing drinks and desserts. Tasty apps and mains to enjoy. Service was perfect. We took 25 people here after another restaurant unexpectedly canceled our event in the afternoon. The staff set us up in a private room, had plenty of servers to make us feel welcomed, and followed-through with a delightful meal. We will never eat at this restaurant again. The food was bland and horrible. I got the French onion soup and the prime rib french dip and both were bland and my fries tasted like they were old fries just put back in the fryer from the night before yuck. My husband got their burger and when it came it was basically raw and didn't have the "sauté" mushrooms he had asked for on it, when we showed the server he apologized and took the burger back to have them fix it, when he brought his burger back it was new bun but, same cut in half burger they literally threw back on the grill and cooked it longer and add the so called sauté mushrooms (which where just from a can). The server was great and apologized for everything that's why I gave them one star other than that I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone. For the price you pay the food is not worth it! We visited on a Saturday night. We were seated fairly quickly but could not order until a certain time. As we were seated in the bar, we were told a person would come tame our drink order. After about 20 min we did get our drink order, then the food order. The food was delivered before the drinks. Pretty off-putting. I had the Walleye. It was slightly overdone, the sling difficult to remove and had an unpleasant "fishy" taste. I am a fish eater and while this wasn't "bad" it was a bit odd. It was much worse than the Walleye I had the night before elsewhere. My husband had the prime rib which he said was very good. The baked potato was outstanding. The side salad was good. This place was great. A decent variety of different foods. I had shrimp and it was out of this world wonderful. My husband had pork and it was fantastic, if a little spicy. The vegetables were roasted and delicious. I really enjoyed them because they had some crunch to them. Since we were celebrating our anniversary, the server even brought us a small dish of vanilla custard with chocolate sauce and whipped cream to share since we had not ordered dessert. The prices were a little higher, but they do have specials that bring the cost down. We left the server a larger than normal tip, because she made this an experience rather than just dinner. Tried so so so hard to love it, been here a handful of times & every time I get so disappointed. It is the day after Mother's day so I get it but I can probably guarantee you my lobster tales were old. They were rubbery & fish tasting & I can promise you I've had good lobster tales, I've been to Ishnala. I ordered my steak medium rare & it came out very very rare, I'm a waitress, I know the difference, I did say something to my waitress & she took it back to the kitchen for me but it came back out basically charred & the same exact way that it was sent it, oh & hot this time, along with taking 14 minutes to "heat back up" I was upset because my waitress didn't necessarily come back to check on me afterwards I just wasn't happy with my overall experience so I probably won't be back but gotta try everything at least once ! read more

If I could, I would give Simpson's more stars!!!!! Simpson's was recommenced to us for dinner while we spend the weekend in Waupaca. They did not disappoint!!!!!! The six of us were seated right away. Our waitress was prompt and very friendly. I had probably the best scallops I have ever eaten in all my travels. They were large, very sweet and cooked perfectly. My steak was equally delicious. Others at our table had the spaghetti and meatballs and beer battered haddock. No one was disappointed. We dove from Wisconsin Rapids to eat at Simpson's last night to celebrate my college graduation. We arrived to find no seats at the bar so we sat at a nearby table until there was space at the bar for us. We ordered two drinks which were weak. One was a gin and tonic and the other a brandy old fashioned sweet which was nothing special, was subpar, wasn't hand muddled, or homemade and didn't come with the traditional orange and cherry. I even asked for fruit on the last one, twice, but never got it and I could tell the younger bartender who made it didn't know how to make a proper old fashioned. There were waaay too many bitters in it. It wasn't good. Very strange for a Wisconsin supper club. Our waitress, Shawna, was fantastic, very attentive and friendly. The place was clean including the restroom. I ordered the northern pike and loaded mashed potatoes. The pike came fried with a very dry, bland coating and I was not at all impressed. I prefer baked, broiled, or even beer battered but those weren't even an option. The loaded mashed potatoes had virtually no flavor and I wouldn't order them or the pike again. The meal came with sauteed cabbage, carrot slices, and peppers but was barely cooked if at all. I don't like cabbage or peppers so that was a waste. Stick with traditional veggie choices. The clam chowder was good though. The dinner rolls were the typical hard rolls, nothing special and they came with some crushed garlic spread which I did not like at all. The other entre was broiled haddock which was good and I wish I had gotten that. All hers came with was a baked potato and that's it. We were seated at what I thought was the worst table in the place next to an emergency exit door, the kitchen door, the busser station, and the dirty plate cart. It was very loud and the bussers and waitresses were constantly going by and some kid was playing video games with the sound on loud right behind me! I would have preferred a table in the dining room behind the bar where it was quieter. Overall, I was very disappointed and probably won't go back. Other than our awesome waitress being attentive and friendly, I did not feel like a valued customer at all. Disappointing for what was supposed to be my special night. :( read more

I first dined at Simpson's in 1957 when I was on the staff of a Boy Scout camp (Shin-Go-Beek) a few miles south of town. Later on I lived in Illinois and a few times per year, I would make the trip (200 Miles each way) on Saturday, get a room at the hotel, have dinner at Simpsons and drive back home on Sunday. Possibly I came here on a bad day, because our food was horrible. The baked potato was so overcooked, I couldn't even eat it. The broccoli was soggy and not very tasty. Many family occasions have been celebrated here over the years. This last weekend I had dinner with a large group (about 15+) and the service was impeccable, and the prices - especially for the portions - are very reasonable. While the food was decent the waitress we had was AWFUL. The menu stated 4 vodkas and only one was Anejo. She brought me the blanco and then asked " what is Anejo"? All I heard was Patron.? Then she told us all they had was the silver( despite what was plainly listed on the menu which I had asked before ordering if that was the complete listing.)Brought us a whiskey sour with a lime wedge ( drink is NEVER made with lime) and when we asked for lemon she said they did'nt have lemons. We ordered the chicken wings appetizer and asked for 2 sauces; she brought two separate orders of wings without plates to eat them on. When we asked for plates a good 10-15 minutes went by before we got plates at which time the wings were partially cold. Although the restaurant was far, far from full it took forever to get our food and we ended up being there well over two hours. My jerk chicken was dry and tasted like it had been reheated and left out. The other parties at my tables food was ok.. I really wanted to patronage this place as I was from out of town but i gotta say I will never return nor will any of the other 5 people at my table. In fact, this restaurant has become a running family joke because it was so bad. Never in my 60+ years have I not tipped but this time.. Horrible night 8/18/19 Undercooked steaks and a crummy atmosphere. I grew up here and Simpsons was the "fancy" place in town where your parents went on special occasions. I was warned that it was not the same but we went anyway. Steaks were horrible and Medium seemed to mean raw to this chef. Guess I should have listened. Not recommending Simpsons for steaks. We were there on a Thursday night at 4 pm with friends. My husbands steak and potato were great, my baked piked was over cooked, the very side dish was so mushy it was left behind. Simpson's is a local favorite and maybe I was steered the wrong way. Nice white tablecloth restaurant and decent service. I ordered the rack of ribs that say they are smoked daily but they seems a little old to me. Not much of a Smokey flavor at all and the bbq sauce reminded me more of a meatloaf glaze than rib sauce. Bill and I enjoyed our meal. The food was excellent. I had the Chicken Marsala and Bill had ribs and walleye. Soup and salad were excellent. Dinner rolls were fresh and warm. The atmosphere was comfortable You could tell this is a local favorite with many small groups enjoying each other's company. We went to Simpson's 40 years ago and remembered the great food. It is still great. Our waitress, Holly, was sweet and bubbly. She was quick to freshen drinks and refill our dinner rolls. The service was excellent. We will return again when we are in the area. Very nice atmosphere, friendly staff, quiet clean place. Drinks were good and desert was good, sides, soup and salads were delicious but the fish just wasn't great. Fisherman's Bonanza definitely not worth the $$$, broiled was oily and bland flavor. Parking can be difficult when the theater is busy, try the rear lot. read more

Finally a winner... Almost. Growing up in Waupaca, I have been to Simpson's a time or two. It seems every time I go in to eat, I hope that I will finally get a meal that lives up to what Simpson's has always been talked up to be. I have always left disappointed. But since Simpson's is one of the few "nice" restaurants in the area, I always return. And like a child on Christmas morning who just opened a hand knitted sweater from Great Aunt Bertie, I'm disappointed, I didn't get what I wished for. That is until I ordered off the "Mother's Day Specials". The Stuffed White Fish was ...... pretty good. I know that "pretty good" is lame, and doesn't exactly make your mouth water, but the food isn't Simpson's only problem. The bar area has an old supper club feeling, decorated with a mix of the outdoors, Native American art, and random sports junk (local and pro). The outdoor seating is great for the 4th of July parade, but otherwise not that exceptional. The dinning room is confused. Not confusing, but confused. I can not tell what theme or look they are going for but a few random fake plants stapled to the wall is not exactly classy. On the other hand, there are cloth napkins, and table cloths, which are then canceled out by the paper place mats. The menu has an okay selection of fish, beef and chicken. The prices range from about $10 to $20. But, they come with a salad made mostly of iceberg lettuce and "from a box" croutons. The Service is marginal. No one seemed to enjoy their job. The bar tenders were great, but the waitresses seemed to be rushed, or too much in a hurry to smile or be sincere. Simpson's is a pillar in Waupaca, and I'm sure it will be there for many more years. Restaurants in Waupaca seem to come and go, so of you hear of something new and exciting, give it a shot, Simpson's will most likely be there for the next time you're out. read more

We ended up here after our first choice for lunch (Weasels) caught on fire. We didn't take any chances and decided to dine alfresco. Their outdoor area is pretty nice and it was a beautiful day in Wisconsin. We all had the Cheeseburger special. For $5.99 it was a steal, half pound of ground beef, with you choice of cheese and toppings. Mine came cooked to a perfect medium. I loved the old school, oddly-shaped bar. The double baked bake potatoes are extravagant and to die for. Another one that the group enjoyed were the scallops.
