I know this is an Atlanta staple, so my review will likely be very unpopular. I truly enjoy hot dogs. The dogs served at the Varsity are small and have no flavor of their own. It's only when the condiments and coney sauce is added that you get any flavor at all. The ambiance could be much better. The original location is run-down as you would expect from a location that's been around forever. The locations outside of downtown seem to have intentionally be decorated to mirror that image. I'm sure they've done this to give the illusion you're at the original location but for someone not native to Atlanta, it's lost on me. The service was so-so. The restaurant was not very busy yet there was no greeting from any of the staff until they were ready to take my order. What does it take to look at a customer and say welcome, rather than watching you enter and immediately looking somewhere else? If you want a good tasting hot dog from a chain restaurant, I suggest Freddy's. Otherwise, grill one for yourself. read more

I hadn't visited the Varsity since I was a young child when I was in Atlanta. Wanted to see how this compared to what I remembered. Nothing special like people seem to hype it up as. The food was alright. Very greasy, which is synonymous with the Varsity. Restaurant was very clean and well-stocked. Not sure if I'd visit again. read more

Got the kid a kids meal dog with fries and a drink, I got a kids meal dog with onion rings and upsized to a coke float. Hubby got two dogs, fries and a drink. It was plenty for us with leftovers for $29. Then got a take home double burger for the teenager for less than $5. Not bad at all for a fun night out with the little one. The food was great, I really like their fries and onion rings. Hot dogs were just right and not too salty. We had a great experience. Staff was super friendly, patient and helpful. Wow. Not good. After all the hype, and then waiting a month so they could work the kinks out, we finally had lunch at The Varsity. What was good? Nice servers. Really the gal that waited on us was super nice. The gal who prepped our order was super nice. The place was very clean and tidy. The big screen TV was a nice touch. Parking lot was nice as well and it should be since it's new. Not good. Let's start with the staff member who went all ballistic to the manager in front of customers! Wow. Haven't seen that in a long while. Please. If you've got an issue with other staff take it outside to discuss. The manager should have had enough pro experience to handle this without customers hearing all the spew! Food. Mediocre at best. My chili dog was so over cooked. Bleh. Onion rings dripping in grease. Really not appealing and very pricey. Lunch for two was $35! This is fast food y'all! I had the impression that The Varsity was going to be old school with hand made shakes and sandwiches etc. but not even close. It's just fast food in a bit of a diner environment. I ordered the $8 kid meal. A tiny cheeseburger and onion rings, spent $1.99 to upgrade to a mini milkshake. For $10 I got a school cafeteria-quality bland burger on a toasted dry bun. The cheese wasn't even gooey. The onion rings had an AMAZING FLAVOR, would be best ever if they were not soaked in dripping grease. I had to toss half away the grease was just too much. The shake was average at best. There are far better options in Rome for fast food. The Varsity disappointed me for all its hype. Pricey bland food. read more

Why Rome, GA fought for this fast food junk, I'll never understand! I ate there for the first time today! I know their signature is steamed buns, but how soggy! I took my slaw dog off the bum and it was tasty, good slaw. And the Frosted Orange, yummy BUT... My "glorified" burger was tasteless (and they forgot the cheese) even with mayo, lettuce and tomato! No taste at all!!!!! Mickey D's makes a better burger! (Truly can't believe I said that!) And my onion rings were fried in old oil, I was in the restaurant business over 20 years, so I know what fried foods look like in old oil. New oil makes food look toasted, a light fried color. My onion rings? Well they sure weren't crispy as advertised, dripping of oil, saturated, and that old oil dark brown color... I threw them out. I should have listened to my friend in ATL to stay away!!!! My fellow Romans in Rome, GA, don't waste your money! All of that yuckiness cost me $15!!!! And an upset stomach. My dog probably has one too bc I have him the burger! But the young man at the door, he was great! read more

Burgers are top tier. Out of all fast food restaurants in Rome this one probably is the most consistent with service and quality. I've been here maybe 5 or so times and have never had a complaint. 6 stars in my opinion. read more

We had been eager to try Rome's newest fast food option and went on one of the first open days. I don't know if they cooked loads of burgers ahead of time to cope with crowds but our food was so dry. Melted cheese was so melted it was nearly impossible to see and of course had no flavor. We, being new to the menu, didn't realize that there were NO condiments included, no lettuce, etc either ... unless you PAID for it. Fries, meh. Onion rings, nothing special. One of us liked their milkshake and the other couldn't even recall ordering it, it was that "good". Every time we drive by there are no more crowds. The traffic cones remain, but why? If they don't close first, we'll go back in a month or so and see if we can get some fresh, hot food. But only 1 meal this time; until we're sure they can deliver quality at some higher level. I'm really not surprised that this Yelp listing hasn't been claimed. Who owns/manages that Varsity? I'd love to meet them. read more
