Sat outside with my pup. We were the only ones outside upon arrival. The server was friendly and insisted I order the fish tacos and when I asked what kind of fish they were he had zero clue. Yet, he insisted they were so good, smh. The tacos came out with overly salted fries so I sent them back. I was charged for the non salted fries but the server removed them from my bill. I have a friend that lives in the Rome area that is related to either someone that runs this place or owns it. He told me that if I ordered it and didn't like it, he would Venmo me the money for my lunch. Well, now I had to try it! He went on to tell me not to put mayo, mustard, or ketchup on it when it arrived- just to eat it as it comes. Of course I was skeptical, as I love mayo on my burger, but I followed his advice and ate it as it comes. He was right! The spices used on the meat and the vegetables on the burger made it a perfect burger. This may be the only burger I've eaten without mayo for the last 48 years. I was in Rome for a business trip and stumbled across their adorable downtown area. Unlike metropolitan downtowns, the parking was plentiful and free! John Henry's was one of only a few spots open on a Sunday before noon. The restaurant is nice and big with a real down home, country feel. I was welcomed warmly and sat very quickly. They are open for limited hours on Sunday for brunch so I ordered from the brunch menu. Drinks are served in giant mason jars to add to the country vibe. I ordered the country Benedict with no ham. It is served on a buttery and crisp biscuit. Instead of a poached egg, it has a fried egg on top, with a Cajun hollandaise sauce. The flavor was delicious. I did miss the yolk from a poached egg, but that was my fault for not reading the menu closely enough. It was topped with arugula and roasted tomatoes, which was a great touch. The hashbrown casserole had great flavor. It was soft on the inside with a nice crisp dome of cheese on top. My only issue with that was it just wasn't hot enough. It seems like it was sitting under a warming light for a while and I wished it was just a tad hotter. The roasted broccolini that I ordered was not broccolini at all. This was a disappointment. I would have gone for Brussel sprouts if I would have know that I was going to be getting broccoli. The flavor was good, but I love the sweetness of broccolini, which is why I chose that as a side. Overall, it was a great meal and I would return. I hope to be back in town to try their lunch or dinner menus. read more

The hamburger was mediocre at best, but the clincher was the fact that we were charged a credit card fee (despite the fact that we used a debit card). Apparently the establishment charges for water also . Wow . Review for John Henry's Grill On a recent road trip from Nashville to Atlanta, my husband (a professional chef) and I were searching for a great meal that wasn't the same old thing we've had a million times. John Henry's Grill popped up as a suggestion on Apple Maps, and after checking out the photos and menu, we decided it was worth the 25-minute detour. Spoiler alert--it absolutely was! From start to finish, everything was fantastic. The corn bread was the perfect balance of moist and flavorful, setting the tone for what was to come. The Volcano Shrimp appetizer had just the right amount of heat and crunch, making it a must-try. The salad bar was fresh and well-stocked (which is always a nice touch), but the real stars of the meal were the brisket tacos, perfectly seasoned greens, and hearty beans. Every bite was packed with flavor, and you could tell a lot of care went into the preparation. And to top it all off, they even made a simple grilled chicken tender for our puppy--going the extra mile in both service and hospitality. However, my brother-in-law recommended John Henry's. The food was so good we were happy that the other place had closed, All three of us enjoyed every single bite. The Henry's special was great, best steak I've had in a restaurant for quite awhile. The salad bar was amazing and the staff were incredible. It took forever to get drinks refilled, to get our food, and my side was very cold when it was brought out to me and the waitress continuously ignored our table so by the time I got a replacement, I had finished the rest of my food. Seems pretty 1980s. Zucchini fries: Lightly battered, not greasy. Good job. Brussels sprouts: Fried and tasted like straight up grease. No flavor. Mac and Cheese: Not great. It was neither soft and creamy -- nor -- crispy and crusty. It tasted like vegan Mac snd cheese where the texture is off and nothing tastes right. Portobello sandwich: one slice of bread was soggy, the mushroom lacked flavor. I found myself putting salt and mustard on it just to taste something. Risotto: Not a lot of flavor but at least not greasy. Artichoke tomato dip: Gross. What the hell was that? Liquidy cheese sauce with no artichoke taste. And no tomatoes. Nothing here was good. Ordered the groupers tacos and Mac and cheese. The Mac was ok but if thee was Gouda in it then it was a very mild Gouda. On the other hand the tacos were strong and not in a good way. Before taking a bite I could smell the fishiness. Surprisingly when I tasted it the fish could barely be tasted because it was so salty. After three bites I decided to send it back. I replaced with a cheese burger which I was able to eat but it was also a bit salty and just nothing special. You might think that I just have salt issues but I more often add salt to foods than think they are too salty. The only reason I'm not giving it a 1 is that the service was good. They gladly replaced the tacos and checked with me often I also was not impressed by the atmosphere of the place. $50 Lunch would have been better spent on groceries. If you offer $14 burgers, they better be top notch and what they are described on the menu. Here is the rub. The meat. The toppings. The cook. SPOT ON. The two stars are lost on execution and overall quality. My husband ordered the Ruben burger; which is a huge push outside his normal range. He's usually a straight bacon burger type a gentleman. The Ruben was served on a Ryebread that was very thin sliced, almost obviously store-bought. It was saturated in so much clarified butter that he gave up on eating the burger just for that fact halfway in. Let's just say that butter stayed with him all day. Very little sauerkraut or slaw a smattering of corn beef and a thin sliced beef patty. Now my husband doesn't like thousand Island, but he didn't even have a chance to ask for some stone ground mustard, our waitress went MIA immediately after giving us our food. My burger was the house special, I was asked if I wanted it cooked a certain way I said medium. The burger was too thin sliced patties that you cannot cook to temp so why ask. With that being said the burger was perfect, until I spit my food out. You can hate me for saying this, but I hate pickles. Nowhere in the description did it say pickles would be in this burger. There was one on top of the burger underneath the cheese,And then when I thought I was safe there was another pickle underneath the bottom beef patty between more toppings. I gave up on my bun ate the rest of the burger which was delicious. Again, even if I wanted to complain or send it back, zero waitstaff insight for us. Two beers, two burgers, and the explanation that have to wait staff and kitchen staff called out equals $50 lunch, fantastic conversation with my hubby, and never going back despite it being a really cute location. read more

I couldn't help but feel slightly nickel and dimed during my visit though - 50-cents for two glasses of water & an additional charge for paying with card. The BLT was fantastic, and I was surprised by the verity of the salad bar- you could make a meal off just one trip. What makes this restaurant top place isn't just the food, price, or atmosphere. BUT THE SERVICE! I asked if they had a dipping sauce for the sweet potato, unfortunately they didn't. Moments later, the chef came out with a sauce that the just made up. It was beyond delicious! We had lunch here yesterday, and it was absolutely delicious! My husband had a ribeye steak, macaroni and cheese, and a baked potato. His ribeye was tender and seasoned well, the macaroni and cheese and baked potato were scrumptious. I had pecan crusted sea bass, macaroni and cheese, and delectable green beans. Everything was seasoned well, hot, and fresh. We both had sweet tea, which they serve in 32 oz. Mason jars. Few people need refills! Dropped in with a group of 4 last evening. Almost immediate seating after being told a 15-minute wait. Our guests were delayed arriving but no pressure to order. The bar must have been slammed, our drink orders and reorders took as much as 15 minutes to arrive. Food was good, Sea bass and loaded potatoes but salt is definitely the house seasoning. The zucchini fries just tooo salty. Other than the delay of bar orders, service was good, waitress earned her 18% grat. Deal killer is the 2.5% unannounced surcharge for using a credit card.
