I would wager, dear reader, that you didn't know Southgate Shopping Center was one of the first large shopping centers in the USA? Neither did I until I visited my home state recently and did a nostalgia tour after a 20-year absence. Dedicated in 1955, Southgate opened with 44 stores. At its peak, in the mid-1990s, back when I cruised the parking lots on my bmx, it had 150 stores. It faced competition from Randall Park Mall; but that giant fell in 2008 and today well.... Today, Southgate stands as a monument of the old times growing up in Cleveland. I remember riding bikes up to Kmart with Joe and buying food when Kmart still had cafeterias. I had my groundbreaking event of seeing my first movie alone in the theater at Southgate (Transformers!). Putt Putt? Nuff said. Who could forget staring into video game cases in hopes of someday acquiring a Neo Geo at Toys r Us? Perhaps the most interesting thing to me about Southgate back in the day (second only to the amazing curb jump in the back) was the pet store, Petland. Somehow Petland had exotic fish and animals that seemed so interesting to Midwest children; the saltwater tanks seemed only unfathomable dreams back then. Anyway, before I get too nostalgic and further date myself, I will say that I'm surprised there is still some life at Southgate. I had forgotten about Mr. Hero until I drove by it. I almost went in for those wafer fries. There's dilapidated stores, like old wounds, festering around Southgate, unfilled. Like all old things, however, there must be an end and a new beginning. Not sure what is in store for Southgate Shopping Center (pun!), but I thought it deserved a review from a former resident of the glorious north coast.
