Very rude staff member. She offered no assistance. Was incredibly abrupt and dismissive. I asked a simple question, "would you recommend any essential oils for nicely scenting a home?". Did not finish the question she replied, "I don't know!" I responded "Right, you have no idea" She responds, "I have no idea what you need" I think to myself, what in the fucking hell? So I proceeded to go with lavender, as per usual. As a new shopper, Vajra is now dead to me. I have nothing bad to say about this place! I come here to buy incense. I never know exactly what I'm looking for so I always browse around sniffing all the different packaging until I eventually settle on an assortment of nice mystic/nature-hybrid sounding sticks of smelly powder. The staff has always been welcoming and friendly towards me. And to be honest, this is the kind of place that I feel a little out of place in - I'm just looking for something to make my apartment not smell like a Grateful Dead concert. But they have all sorts of crystals, literature, tarot cards, and various mystic things that I know virtually nothing about. But I've overhead the staff talk to other customers about things like "energy" and "alchemy" and they sounded very knowledgeable and eager to help. That stuff is not quite my cup of tea, but it's still a nice cute little shop with pleasant music that I enjoy visiting every month or so. read more

Whenever we are out on Broadway I've got to stop in here. They've got a great variety of essential oils that they'll mix and match for you. They also have a lot of incense and gemstones. This store is good for what I needed. It is a small store but well organized. The size of their crystals are very small so if you are looking for something a little larger you may have to go somewhere else. But I didn't have time to go anywhere else and I really didn't want to go to the Market (the gem shop there had some poor reviews so I decided to come here) so I came down here instead...the prices for their crystals were a hair overpriced for thier size but they did have many different varieties. The woman that was in the shop today was friendly but left me alone to figure out what I needed which I appreciated. I pick out my stones by touch and which ones speak to me...she let me empty out the bowl onto the counter so I could pick the stone I wanted...and the same thing with my prayer beads. It was a pleasant experience. I was in there a long time but I never felt pressured to make a fast decision. This shop had everything I needed...the shop is small but filled with a lot of wonderful delights. read more

I've found the same crystals/incense/books/decks at other like locations for much less than what is asked here. For someone who is very skeptical about superstition, supernatural belief, mysticism, et cetera... I really appreciated that my buddies recommended I come here for a tarot card reading. They had stopped in on a whim earlier in the week, and had their readings done by Rain. As soon as they were done, they rushed home and ranted for almost an hour how helpful, insightful, and beneficial their experience had been. Now, usually I'd be the first to cry "horse shit!" to something like this, but I had never spoken to a fortune teller before, and have a yen to try almost anything at least once. I went to see Rain. I was there early, but she saw me right away. Tucked away behind a curtain in the corner of the little shop, she sat me down and was very welcoming. I didn't feel like I was being hoodwinked or patronized. Rain was actually legit, awesome to be around, and genuine. I wasn't really lost or searching for some huge answer to life... But what concerns and things I had been pondering for a while, she directly addressed, and was incredibly spot on (uncanny, because I didn't share enough information for her to know, but her insight and knowledge of these things was immediately profound). She has a gift. I don't say that a lot. I've never said that about someone, probably. But, she is certainly able to look at a person's life and choices objectively and give great advice. After having gone here, I have to concur with my buddies--the experience was not only helpful, but truly inspiring. I have already recommended her to many of my friends. Especially the ones that need help with some kind of guidance, but pretty much anyone could benefit from this scenario, in my opinion. This place was recommended to me by a friend because she was wearing the oil and I had to have it. I just had my tarot cards read here for the first time a few weeks ago! I scheduled an appointment for a Wednesday afternoon reading with Melissa... SO GLAD I did!! Melissa was great at explaining how tarot cards work and while I was a bit skeptical going in, I knew within minutes that Melissa is "the real deal". She was able to bring up occurrences in my life and spoke about ways that I see the world and the ways I think internally that she couldn't have possibly known! And, she gave me a "prediction" for my love life that she said would happen very soon and so far it looks like what she told me is manifesting. I was very confused by what she told me (meaning I didn't see how it could happen so soon) but I just went with it, and here I am and each day I keep realizing how closely what's happening is aligning with what Melissa said! It's always nice to see inside a small store and see a smiling face. She wasn't talkative that drives you right out, either. The scent of the incense just draws your curiosity followed by your body right in. There are so many electic items here. You can get your tarot cards read. On my first visit to this little store I was searching for some special crystals; I met Nikki & she helped me choose several amazing crystals: a chunk of kyanite, a naturally occurring kyanite/citrine/quartz combo & a naturally occurring kyanite/quartz combo. These have proven to be so powerful and life changing- thank you Nikki for your talent and intuition! On my second visit, I met Sarah! She was so wonderful, answered all of questions and allowed me the time & space to, again, intuitively pick out several items (pendulum, cards & elephant candle holder) that have all impacted my life in huge ways. I reconnected with lovely Nikki & met Melissa, a tarot reader, on my third visit. Wonderful place, wonderful people. This shop has no competition! The Vajra may look real puny but its full of "small indulgences!" Their incense selection will have you blissed out, as well as their jewelry selection, tarot card decks, books, and crystals. The shopkeepers are full of wisdom and absolutely gracious. They also have a small back room for readings. Annnnd on Mondays evening they do workshops in a nearby location. Great place and a must-shop if you are in the area! read more

I went in for my nose and was delighted to find a handful of very cool gifts and also some lovely cards. The complimentary postcards are also a nice touch. I visited The Vajra because it was the only place on Capitol Hill that sells the Flowers From the Dead oracle set (and my dog had just eaten mine). This shop is tiny and redolent with incense, so beware if you're sensitive to scents. The person at the cash wrap was deep in conversation with another customer so I was left mostly to my own devices, which I prefer. Not only did I find Flowers From the Dead, I left with two other oracle decks! There were many unique and beautiful options, for tarot and oracle alike. I love this place although I don't get here often. They have a ton on great smelling stuff like essential oils and incense. My favorite is the Sataya and this is the only place I can find the variety that I love so much. I also but my patchouli oil there. I'm not much for the tarot cards or other mystical stuff but if it's your thing I guess this would be the place to go. read more
