From the moment we walked in, we were warmly welcomed by the wonderful staff. The store is a dream, everything is thoughtfully color-coordinated, making it a feast for the eyes. There's truly something for everyone, and it's the perfect one-stop shop for creating a thoughtful gift basket. I could have easily spent hours browsing the unique selection, but my husband was eager to get to our next destination. We were visiting from out of town the first time we stopped in, but now it is a go to spot, even if it's just to check out what they have put out recently! Went here a couple of days ago and had a horrible experience. I went on a sunny day, and couldn't see through the window very well. I looked at the sign and it said they were open but I didn't see anyone inside. There's a buzzer out the door and I went and pressed it. No one came so I pressed it one more time. At this point, I saw movement and was buzzed in. Once in, I felt the sales associate staring at me. It was only me and her and I felt quite awkward. I couldn't figure out if I had something on my face or my shirt was on backwards. Finally, the sales associate sternly says "you know, we can hear the buzzer from back there. You do not need to buzz us so many times." I was appalled. I had never been stared at or talked to so rudely. I kindly said "Oh! Sorry. I didn't see anyone inside so I wasn't sure if you could hear me." She didn't respond to that and thankfully another customer came in. I promptly left and will be taking my money elsewhere. It's a bummer as I used to be a loyal shopper and love to support small businesses. As a veteran of customer service, I understand how demanding said job can be, but it doesn't merit being rude to customers. read more

I've been a loyal customer for years, but I'm done. There is a woman who works in the back wearing thick black glasses who has ruined my shopping experience every single time. Her condescending, elitist attitude creates a hostile environment and is completely inappropriate for a customer-facing role. I've made repeated trips from Vashon and Tacoma and have supported this store for years through purchases and word of mouth. This behavior is clearly a pattern. We stumbled across this shop near closing time today. We were welcomed with a nasty remark about how we had 10 minutes. The other unfriendly saleswoman made remarks that let us know to check out immediately or basically get out. What a rude couple of ladies! We won't be back! Honestly speaking, this store beckoned me in because of the beautifully merchandised windows, but left me vowing to never step foot inside again. How to begin... first you must ring a buzzer to get in the locked door, crazy given it's a retail shop. In full disclosure they were scheduled to close in 15 minutes so this may have been their usual procedure. However what followed was an unbelievably rude experience. I was greeted with a woman loudly telling me they would be closing soon and to hurry through. Ok, no problem I thought, but another employee came out and started following me and continued the intimidation and rude process by announcing 8 minutes, 5 minutes and finally 2 minutes. If I were the owner of this store I would be mortified to have employees like this. I went in there prepared to find the perfect gift for a friend and abruptly was pushed out because a couple employees wanted to get to their happy hour. read more

While walking back to my hotel, I happened to come across this store. I am a tourist visiting from another state and I am a person of color. I came in and started to look around but I noticed that one of the workers starting following me around. It was a white lady with black glasses and she made it very clear because I wherever I went she followed closely. She had no disgrace in her actions as she conspicuously followed me around looking to see what I grabbed. There was other people in the store but she only followed me. It's clear that this store continues to disregard people of color and continues to perpetuate such a racist environment, where they create such a negative space as they treat their customers like criminals. I've also noticed this is not the first time they have followed people around. Other customers have mentioned the same thing on here too. I am surprised that such a racist store continues to be open and management continues to support such practices. This store should be held accountable for their shameful actions and should take classes to educate themselves on manners, diversity, and inclusive practices. I took the time to write this review because a business should not be run this way. There is no place for racism and discrimination in any community. Horrible customer service. Went in and asked a price for a lamp and the lady said she'd have to get my name down cause she has to worry about something else right now, totally dismissing me. Had two set of flowers from pikes and she told me to leave them outside. Then told me to take my kids outside to top it all off. First customers as they opened and essentially asked to leave right away when wanting to purchase something. read more

The store clerk obliged and I left the store. I arrived at my hotel and unwrapped the mug to find the handle was broken. As impressed as I was by the Watson & Kennedy Pike Place location, the downtown location is even better. Much of the "fine living" merchandise is the same (vintage and new alphabet letters, ribbons, luxury soaps, candles, perfume, jewelry, notebooks, greeting cards, laundry detergent) but there's more of it. And this location has gourmet food products (fleur de sel caramels, preserves, cookies, Marie Belle drinking chocolate, olive oil) and tableware. I also spied a sale area (didn't see that at the other location). The sale area had Diptyque candles for 50% off. I loved the surprise balls that they put together ($20). A random assortment of Watson & Kennedy trinkets (e.g., seashells, buttons, keys, flowers, champagne cork) is wrapped in layers of colorful crepe paper. Overpriced? Wow! I love this store! I was cruising down the street when I saw some super cute window displays and I knew I had to find how to get into the store. Watson Kennedy has some awesome and fun stuff, much of which has a classy vintage flair. Some items are new but made to look vintage while other items are authentic antiques. My favorite find of the day was a bracelet made out of old fashioned typewriter keys. It's very cool and I love wearing it with my black and white wardrobe. Watson Kennedy has other cool jewelry as well as lots of items for the home like yummy soaps, fun dish towels and cute little accessories. It's no surprise that the owners home has been featured on HGTV and that his store has been featured in some big name magazine. This is one of the coolest stores I've ever been in and I look forward to being a regular on the Watson Kennedy website. read more

No stars, sorry. Yelp won't allow me to post this without rolling over at least one star, so I'm letting readers know here that they don't deserve the one I couldn't help but give them. While hubby and I adore the fabulous merch in this place, he dropped in this morning to buy some soaps, and was followed around the store and closely watched by a clearly nervous female white sales clerk. While the clerk was making him feel like he was under suspicion for grand larceny, there were several other patrons in the store were not given so much as a second glance. Big surprise - my husband is not white. Not that there is any need to explain WHY this is horrendous - no one should preemptively be assumed to be a thief, despite clothing, demeanor, or bearing - but I will note for the record that my husband is 50, middle-class, super-scrubbed up, and dresses in steel-rimmed lawyer specs, cashmere sweaters, and a formal black overcoat with a velvet collar. So he's got brown skin and African-American features. This is NOT a reason to tail him, and make him feel suspected and conspicious. Not only has this fine establishment lost today's potential sale - and you all know how expensive their stuff is, so it's not like they lost $.79 - but they've lost our business for good and always. Was this a corporate dictate, for the while sales lady to follow my husband? Or simply a racist twit scared of a man she ignorantly perceived as a potential thief, or some other kind of menace? It doesn't matter. We are never going there again, to either branch, and I will personally tell everyone I know that this is how non-white customers are treated. For shame. read more

I was given the treatment here, and not the good kind. Eyeballed intently as I walked around the store. I guess I don't fit the profile of their customer, white ladies over 50 with money to spare for over priced goods. Don't get me wrong, I love what they do with it. The displays are the reason to go there. But I won't be returning after being asked to leave for talking on my cell phone while shopping. Understand I wasn't engaging staff while on my phone or expecting them to ring me up. I was merely walking around, you know, shopping. If speaking on a cell phone isn't permitted in the store at all it would be a lot less rude to post a sign stating that rather than asking me "to take it outside." Sorry. I popped in because we were staying next door at Hotel 1000 and I saw the cutest desk nameplate in their window display. I was pleasantly surprised at how many different products were arranged by color group when I stepped inside. Their merchandising makes you want to buy everything! Like many other yelpers have mentioned, most of their inventory is soaps and candles, but they also have an array of journals, cookbooks, stationary, utensils, seasonings, high end condiments and cocktail syrups, and knick knacks that would be perfect for gifting or adding a splash of whimsy to your home. It reminds me of a more basic/housewife/William's Sonoma version of Lucca over in Ballard - which is a good thing because I love that store (highly recommended) but didn't have the chance to make it there on this trip. This place is definitely on the pricey side, although if I didn't only have a carryon bag, I probably would have picked up a few more things. The young blonde girl who helped me was super sweet and even crawled into the window display to grab the nameplate for me since it was the last one. She wrapped it up nicely without even asking, which was a nice touch. I'm glad I stopped in and would definitely come back on my next trip to Seattle. read more

"How did I spend $100 on candles?" The words that come from my mouth each and every time I shop here. Which is about once every two weeks - pay day. The only time I am feeling flush enough to rationalize this sort of spend on smellies. While the housewares and furniture are VERY expensive, so are the soap, the lotion, the cleaning supplies, and the candles. And I have to buy all of them. Yes, have to. There are scents I have found no where else and they need to be present in my home. Always. The packaging alone on the window cleaners they stock is worth the $20+ price tag in my book. It just is. I also love to buy very small gifts here, and if you scrub around long enough, you will find a little vase or perhaps a vile of olive oil under $20. The nice thing is that they will wrap whatever you select up in a Midori ribbon and send you on your way with a classy little gift. I am very disturbed by the review that Kira placed here, and think that it's something that should be brought to the attention of the owners. I have had many a little chat with one of them and I can be sure that they would dismiss the employee in question post-haste. For shame indeed. read more

For those of us who have a creative side, this is a great place to browse, to "shop" for ideas. I often come here for inspiration, to get my creative juices flowing. Its wares are a mix of old and new: vintage finds mostly from Europe along not-so-common housewares, artwork, stationery, soaps and candles. I really like this place but I am giving it a 3-star rating instead of 4 stars because I am not a fan of overpriced items. Some of the vintage finds can actually be found somewhere else for almost half the price they sell them here. The store is geared towards a certain clientèle. If one wants to feel as if one is shopping at a boutique in Paris' Rive Gauche then one pays for the experience just to shop here. For those of us who prefer to be left alone to browse until we have questions to ask, the store associates are attentive without being intrusive so one could browse undisturbed. For those of us who prefer "service with a smile", this might not be the place though I have yet to encounter snootiness or rudeness. Give this place a shot, even just for creative inspiration. You might find yourself pleasantly surprised. Otherwise, move on. read more

This is probably the best home embellishments store in all of Seattle. Everything they carry is of a quality an order of magnitude above most gift shops. The fragrances in their hand soaps and candles are so sophisticated. They carry lovely art by local artists, candlestick holders, coasters, water goblets, and other items like these that give your home that final touch of thoughtfulness and elegance. read more

This place is cool, which all the lotions and typography. It's very put together but has a lot to offer. My only problem is a personal one, we came back because I had to try this lotion, the day before I used a different one. My intent was to buy the second one but about two minutes after putting it on, I became so sick of the smell. I then continued to put another hand moisturizer on to mask the smell; when has that EVER been a good idea?! So I just cursed my hands to smell horribly for the next hour. Although I did find a pear scented candle I really liked, I figured I'd soon turn against that scent as well and decided it was probably best to leave. The decor of the store was awesome and I was really fond of the canvas shopper bag that said keep calm and carry on, I really wish I would have bought that and the pear candle. Oh well... read more

The store is an enticing meandering stroll through your senses, mostly your eyes, and nose! Soaps,candles, lotions and potions! I LOVE this store. My mom dragged me in here the other day, and at first I wasn't excited, thinking it was a furniture store (yes, I may be an adult, but haven't yet gotten into the "furniture is exciting!" mindset), but little did I know it was a magical wonderland of gifts! Things were expensive, but honestly not as expensive as I'd expected. I love how much they were able to fit into this tiny space without making it seem cluttered. If I were on less of a budget, or if I had had less time, I probably would've bought everything in the store. read more

This shop has all sorts of (expensive) home goods. They have a huge assortment of candles ranging in price from $15 - $45. I personally had no idea candles could be $45, and I don't know what makes a candle $45, but I have bought some lovely $20 candles here before. I have one that comes in a pretty little tin that smells like pine forests, and another in a glass jar that smells like fresh pears. Yum! They also have a big selection of lotions, little cheese plates, soaps, and diffusers, and an entire section dedicated to bird-themed items. Those Portlandia folks would really enjoy it. Warning though that the things here, as evidenced by my surprise at the $45 candle, are pricey. The prices are close to like Anthropologie home goods prices, but with a few more dollars added on. read more

This has become my must stop at store when I visit Seattle. I seriously usually spend an hour in here just looking at every little thing. Everything is so inviting and most of what you will see here you will not find in other stores...anything from that perfect jewelry piece to soaps, fine baking goods...linens....random pet things, decor items, gifts for those really hard to shop for people. I am always on the lookout for neat little girly cards and trinkets to give as gifts, so I was expecting to find more to love about Watson Kennedy than I did. I am scent-sensitive, and the sheer volume of candles and soaps in the store make it smell fragrantly. While the odor is in no way bad, it is strong is enough to make me want to turn around and walk out almost immediately upon entering. Once I get beyond that impulse, I enjoy browsing, particularly their books and cards and displays, which evoke a sense of a classy british lifestyle that I think most girls have probably found themselves fancying at some point or another. In general, however, I am not their target demographic, as the shop seems to be geared more towards ladies who have a little more money in their bank account than I do, and who use scented moisturizer more than once per year by mistake. I always found something to want, when I go in, though, from cocktail napkins to beautiful and imperfect sugar cubes that can be displayed on the table and used for tea or (in my case, more likely) a super classy old fashioned. read more
