I am a B&B fanatic, and this was literally the best B&B you can imagine. First of all, the warm and friendly proprietor Sandy is so welcoming and knowledgeable. The Inn itself is clean, beautiful, and cozy. The wisteria room was just gorgeous, with a huge bathroom and jacuzzi tub. The bathroom floors were stone tiled, and gorgeous. The bed was firm but with enough give and decorated impeccably. The breakfasts included herbed scrambled eggs, fresh scones, cinnamon rolls, fruit salad, bagels/english muffins, and perfect hot coffee. I was offered snacks, tea, or wine when I returned from a long day - and given advice on travel and food. Yes, from downtown it is a bus ride or $8 cab ride - but for such a reasonable price and quiet neighborhood it is worth every penny. This place is amazing. My extended family has reached almost 30 when we start counting infants, and Uptown House fits us all! When your family is this big, they learn to roll with the punches of communal living. There is always some struggle in big gatherings and this house has met all our demands pretty easily. Did you want a huge kitchen that seems like it fell out of Downton Abbey? Done. A homey carriage house with a bidet for my kids to have a brand new giggling experience? Perfecto! Solid wifi? Yep! Plastic wine goblets for breakfast orange juice for same children? Check! Many rooms with chairs and couches for a hundred moments to connect and find out how we've weathered another year? Thankfully yes! Family games, on the bookshelf, and a painting of a family member who has the head of a dog, or is it the family dog dressed up for his portrait? We are still arguing about this, especially as there is a Pokémon Go stop right next door and the kids spent a lot of time in there. Also hidden in the neighborhood is a playground that has two 3-story slides. This was a goldmine for my 6/28 relatives, and we can't wait to come back. read more

I had the pleasure of staying here on a recent business trip to DC. I was searching for somewhere to stay that would be generally accessible to both my client and the Mall area, and I came across this B&B. Their rates were lower than most of the standard hotels in the area, and some of their rooms included in room jacuzzi tubs. It sounded almost too good to be true - but I decided to take my chances anyway. From our arrival to our departure three nights later - everything was absolutely perfect. The house is over 100 years old, and has been beautifully restored and converted with period appropriate furnishings.Except for the bathrooms, which are completely modern and luxurious. Each room is tastefully decorated and unique. In the innkeepers and staff were amazing, and took care of every little detail. The breakfasts were delicious, warming and gourmet. And at night, we'd come home to a roaring fire and wine. And bonus that the 52/53/54 bus line has a stop right outside the door that gave me access to everywhere we needed to be. We didn't even rent a car, and got around town just fine. The Intown Uptown contributed heavily to what would have been an ordinary trip to DC into an extraordinary one. I can't wait until I have reason to be back in DC to stay here again. read more

So I was in DC on business, and this place was half as expensive per night as all of the hotels in the Chevy Chase and Bethesda areas. That's why I initially chose it. Especially in light of that, I was exceptionally happy with what I ended up with. There are beautiful paintings of red poppies (and many other things, but poppies are all over the place) throughout, and one of the parlors had, among others, an ancient volume of Simone de Beauvoir's work, in French, on a shelf with many similarly interesting texts. My room was beautiful, contained a large glass jar of bath salts and several other uncommon amenities, and had a lot of character. I was one of few people there for work--everyone else was site-seeing. Every evening there, I stayed up later than I probably ought to have because the B&B encourages you to socialize with other guests by putting out cookies, red and white wine, mints, and a pitcher of lemony ice water every evening. There was an Australian music teacher who came to DC to inspect the Air and Space Museums, a couple of retired ladies who'd been friends for 40 years and had both worked for Boeing, and a teacher from Singapore on her way to give a keynote at a conference in Ohio. We talked about what we had done with our days, our occupations, compared political structures and situations among our countries, and talked about how education worked where we each were from, too. It was wonderful. I felt like a bit of adventure was added to what otherwise would just have been a grueling work trip. Also: breakfast was awesome. Fresh fruit, evil pastry, innovative savory dishes. Will definitely endeavor to stay at the Intown Uptown again. read more

So stinkin' cute! I rarely use words like cute so you know I mean it. I was in DC for my sisters wedding and this is where we decided to stay. The house itself is great. The whole vibe is very warm and welcoming. Emily and her husband were awesome and make sure that if you need anything you have it. Let's get to the important stuff... The rooms are well decorated and clean. A word of warning if you stay in the Hollyhock room - the ceiling slopes down just enough for you to accidentally smack your head if you are not careful...I was not and did give myself a couple rather rude wake up calls because I wasn't paying attention. However, when I stepped back to examine the scene, it appears I was not the only one, so that was a small consolation. Learn from my mistakes people. Future B&B head related traumas are unnecessary now that you have read this! There is a happy hour. (Squee!!!) When we came in around six, Emily had pitchers of water, lemonade and lemon drop martinis ready. (Sugar rimmed glasses included). Breakfast. Was. Delicious. There were plenty of options for carnivores and veggie enthusiasts. If you drink coffee, your cup will never be empty. You will also buzz about the city for a good couple hours so this is a great start if you plan on walking around the mall or beating other tourists to get the first spot in line for any attractions. I found this place on trip advisor - it had so many great reviews for the service, accommodations and breakfast that I really wanted to try it. The only negative is that you had to take a bus to get to the mall and town center. My husband wasn't really up for it but I talked him in to trying it. We ended up staying here 1 night, although it felt like 2 nights since we arrived at 7am in the morning. The innkeeper Emily was so nice to check us in so early and accommodate us to their fantastic breakfast. The decor of the place is truly amazing - clean, historic, cozy, and well kept. The breakfast room and living room each have a beautiful chandelier making the room enchanting. There is also an outdoor area where I could see it would be nice to sit out there and have a cup a coffee when it is a bit warmer. Breakfast is a true delight - to the food down to the place settings (love the italian dishes) and guests. You get a private table in this beautiful dining room - the two mornings we had breakast here we were greeted by the cheerful guests, and a delicious breakfast (1st day was an egg scramble with veggies, bacon, muffins, sweet cake, fruit and assortment of cereals, the 2nd day belgium waffles with whip cream and pecans, bacon, eggs, fruit, and assortment of cereals). We stayed in the Uptown room - it was cozy and overlooked the back garden. The bathroom was modern and clean. It was a great room. The only thing that you need to be prepared for when staying at a old/historic place such as this - is there is a bit a noise. The walls are paper thin so you really need to be respectful on the noise. It didn't bother me so much...but it did make my husband talk to me in whispers which was quite funny. On the day we arrived, after resting for few hours after our breakfast, we headed across the street and took the bus. You can take any of the buses that stop there - 52/53/54- and it takes you directly to the mall. It's very convenient and takes about 20 min. You can also stop along the way to get to U Street, Dupont Circle, or Adams Morgan fairly quickly. It's more convenient than we thought it would be. The only criticism I would give this place is on the wine hour - I would recommend changing the complimentary wine from a Charles Shaw (2 buck chuck) to something a bit nicer. I really loved this place and would wholeheartedly recommend it. I wish we could of stayed in Washington DC longer so we had at least 2 nights or more here. read more

Let me preface this with the fact that I've never stayed here because I live two blocks away. However, the Intown Uptown hosted a fundraiser for the Friends of 16th Street Heights Parks, and Izzy and I lept at the chance to see the inside of this beautiful house we walk past all the time. The sitting rooms are both gorgeous and comfortable, as I'm sure the guest rooms are. The big surprise, however, is the large and pleasant back patio and deck, which is perfect for an evening cocktail. read more

I've stayed at some nice bed and breakfasts places when I was interviewing and this is probably one of the nicest ones of the bunch. The staff was nice and friendly. We found the Intown Uptown Inn at the last moment, and reserved the last open room. Sandy was beyond helpful, bringing tea up to the room, continually making sure we didn't need anything, and serving a delicious breakfast. The Room with a View did have a great view, but the room itself was worth staring at; it was absolutely gorgeous. I was able to walk to local restaurants to pick up lunch and dinner, which was so convenient. We will definitely be back! read more

We love the Uptown House! We just completed our fourth annual trip to DC during which we stayed at the house. It has become a tradition that we look forward to every year. The owner is amazing, location is great, house is beautiful and perfect for large groups. Metro bus stop right across the street, easy access to public transportation. Stayed here for 2 nights during the Cherry Blossom Festival. The price was less than hotels in the downtown area and, of course, included breakfast. The "lighter" weekday meals still had eggs, bacon, potatoes, etc. each day which was a nice treat. The Orange sticky buns were FABULOUS! Taking the bus was an easy (if not slightly long) way to get to the mall. The house had nice amenities (a nice backyard, a drink room/fridge on the second floor, two nice sitting rooms). Our 13 yo daughter was welcomed and we would stay here again (and rceommend to friends) if in the DC area. read more
