I saw Motion City Soundtrack at UC Theatre on Sunday 7/10/22 and they were fantastic, but this is a review for the venue which really impressed me as someone who goes to a lot of shows. Parking The parking place they recommend on the Theatre site had plenty of parking available even though it did not look that way on the app when I tried to reserve a spot in advance. It's 2 blocks from venue & felt like a safe area in that direct section despite area about 5-10 min from it feeling less safe on drive in. Staff The event was so well organized and everyone who worked there was welcoming / attentive. Security Entry security was standard for a concert. There was no incident during show that would have required their assistance. When a slight mosh pit broke out, Justin (lead singer) encouraged anyone moshing to be gentle & it was effective. Also, I think given Bay Area crowds trend more cautious with pandemic, attendees were respectful of each other's space. Safety Before show, one of the venue managers informed us of where exits are and what to do in emergency. I appreciated that & haven't seen it at shows other places last few months. Food & drinks I did not see food, but it looked like there were reserved lounge style tables available for some attendees. Did not see water bottles, but did not ask. Red Bull was standard concert overprice & they had sugar free option. Acoustics Strong. Timing Entire event was run on time. I've never been to a show in SF area before with event starting on time. I absolutely adore this venue. The first show we saw here was Todrick Hall. Me and the teen girl came and sat in the...do they call it balcony?... section and it was perfect. The place is small enough that you just can't go wrong anywhere you sit or stand. Everything about that show was fantastic. The second show I brought hubby on Valentine's Day for Rocky Horror Picture Show. Isn't that romantic? Actually, I won the tickets via their email list I'm subscribed to....so bonus all the way! The show was put on by Barely Legal, who were the live performers during the film. They were fantastic. The only complaint I have is that they opened the show with a burlesque troupe whose name I forget, and while they were good, just two would have been PLENTY. And there were five or six. Sorry - it just became monotonous. Anyway, back to the review for the actual venue - we stood on the floor for Rocky Horror and it was great too. You can't really go wrong anywhere you sit or stand. The staff is super friendly - everyone. Security, ushers, bartenders...really they do make it just a fun, enjoyable evening. This is one venue that I would not hesitate to go back to...and in fact I look for events here because it's so terrific. read more

I came for a show with my mom. It's a nice place, but the show started 45 minutes late with no indication as to why. It seemed like they were still setting up until almost 9pm, for a show that had doors open at 7! I did not try any food or beverage. They charge for coat check. The bathrooms are fine. General admission does not get anywhere to sit, so if you want to sit, buy the upgraded ticket! They have earplugs available to buy. I came here on my birthday August 19th to see Arthur Verocai. I want to give a huge shoutout to MONICA!!!!!! She helped me and my family immensely with seating for the event and made us so comfortable with being there. I truly cannot praise her enough!! People like her are extremely rare, such an amazing attitude and even with a stressful crowd she took the time to help us. Love the newly opened UC Berkeley Theatre. Place used to be an old movie theater and is now a music venue. Opened 4/7/16 with Dark Star Orchestra which is fitting, a jam band kicking off a Berkeley music venue! Place is perfectly located in downtown Berkeley, public transportation's and tons of food. Not to mention the college vibe. Just tried their food, hands down this is the best venue food ever at great prices. As a volunteer usher I work many venues and the food is generally an afterthought. Maybe because it's newly renovated and recently opened or maybe it's because the owner is out and about throughout the show, or maybe it's just the provider. Whatever it is, the food is truly good and even better it's at great prices. Individual shrimp pizza had tons of shrimp which was cooked perfectly. No hints of fishy, rubbery clues that lead you to believe it was previously frozen. This is no Sysco food. Spoke with the lady who was running the food out from the kitchen and learned that they normally don't work venues and primarily cater weddings. read more

If you're considering paying for a table for a show at the UC Theater in Berkeley you may find my review helpful. I emailed the following message to the Etix website. They are the ticket vendor for shows at this theater. Prior to this I had sent the fist paragraph of the message to the UC Theater. That was nine days ago and they have yet to reply. Etix replied and explained that they do not provides refunds, apparently they make no exceptions even if the service they sold me was misrepresented. My message follows- Below is an email I submitted to the UC Theater's website the day after the December 20th, Wooten Brothers show- "We really enjoyed the Wooten Brothers show last night- they were great and your venue was also good, with a couple of exceptions. We splurged for a VIP table. We arrived early and chose a table along the rail, next to the sound board. Of course, we assumed we'd have a great view of the stage which we did...until the music started. Everyone on the level below us was standing and we could not see the stage other than the smallest of gaps which occasionally occurred. I'm unable to stand for a five hour show. I suggest you fix this or stop advertising it as a VIP table. I'd be grateful if you would acknowledge my message and let me know how you see this. Thanks." I have not heard anything from the theater, and now I'm looking to Etix for satisfaction. I contacted Etix weeks before the show to ask about the seating chart which is on your website. I told your Etix associate that the seating chart is too simple and gives no information about the location of the VIP tables. They told me to check with the theater, The theater then reffered me back to Etix. Out of time to chase this down any further, I stopped, assuming it was reasonable to expect that my VIP table would include a VIEW OF THE STAGE. I paid $364.11, ($310 for the VIP table including (4) GA tix) plus $54.11 fees ). I now request that Etix and/or the UC Theater refund me the cost of the VIP table (not the (4) GA tickets). Our friends bought GA tickets for $45 each. Therefore,(4) GA tix x $45 = $180), from the total tickets cost of $310 = $130. Please refund me $152.13 for the table and associated fees. You might have seen the Rocky Horror Picture Show here. it played weekly for 22 years. The venue has been renovated and is now called the UC Theatre Taube Family Music Hall. It has a state-of-the-art sound system and the interior has been renovated. There are a couple of bars and a restaurant. There are only a few seats on the sides and in the balcony, of course these seats cost more. I'm not sure how good the view of stage might be in the balcony. The side seats have a side view of the stage. The rest of the venue is standing room only; I could see the stage perfectly. If you are not aggressive or if you are short, get there early to claim your standing space on the main floor. If you need to sit for while there are a few chairs in the lobby and you still can still hear the music.You can return to the floor at any time. The U C first opened in 1917 and showed silent movies. Orchestras usually played during these films, it's nice to see that music has returned to this wonderful old theater. If I come again I might consider paying for seats, three hours was a long time to stand. For me this was a 3-star experience, I got pushed around too much, that is the downside of standing at a concert. The theater is a 4+ venue. read more

Having known the UC Theatre as the theater to see the Rocky Horror Picture Show, the facility has been renovated and is now the UC Theatre Taube Family Music Hall. It is a multi-tiered with an open floor on the stage level and table seating on the second and third tiers. There is a full service bar and food service offerings. We waited in line to pick up our reserved tickets at the two window booth. To help move the line, a worker was directing people to the next open window. Made a restroom stop first and was so impressed. The restroom was clean and modern. No question, the nicest restroom in a music/club venue. With our general admission tickets, we were on the open floor on the lower tier where the stage was located. The table seating were on the second and third tiers. I don't mind the trade-off of not sitting for being able to be up close to the performers. We were here to see Ann Wilson of Heart and it was great to see her up close. Impressed with the sound system, which is a state-of-the-art Meyer Leopard system. Didn't get a chance to check out the bar and restaurant, but was able to check out the menu and the prices appear reasonable. I enjoy watching performances at small venues and was impressed with the new UC Theatre. You have the option of getting up close to the stage or opting for table seating. Also, it's located two block from the Berkeley BART Station too. Looking forward to attending the next event here! read more

I show my card, my child (who's under age for vaccine as of this post and in Covid-controlled public school) goes with me. No wonder the venue is failing. Thanks UC. I think this is a terrible, unprofessionally run venue. No info is provided that there is an opening act or what time the headliner comes on, which would not matter as much if there was actually seating in the venue. Also, the crowd is extremely violent. I was standing in the front watching a rap act, and from out of no where I was hit three times in the back and back of my head. Who moshes for a rap act? There was no control of the crowd, at all. I'll start by saying that I attended an excellent concert by Dar Williams last week at the UC Theatre, and that my review here is about the venue as a concert hall. It wasn't too big or too busy, the line to get in was not too long (no reserved seating) and I was very well positioned in the second row to see the performer (I don't see too well at my age). I found it a plus that alcoholic beverages are available for purchase to concert goers. What was most unpleasant for me, however, was the seating (I'm uploading a picture for demonstration). The seats are hard, straight-backed chairs that are, (a) uncomfortable (I wish I had brought some cushioning), and (b) so narrow that if your neighbor has a BMI above 24, you'll have to share blubber space with him or her. They try to squeeze too many people into too small a space, IMHO. I understand the intention, but it makes for uncomfortable seating. read more

In the last year or so I have visited UC Theatre for almost a dozen shows. I am a fan! This venue is gorgeous! From point of entry security, coat-check, bartenders, and other staff on hand during events everyone has been very pleasant, welcoming, and seem happy to be there. I had a very pleasant experience with Tessa in their Marketing Department. She has been attentive, kind, and eager to answer any questions I had about their facility and upcoming shows. UC Theatre and their staff is as good as it gets! There are 3 bars (if I am not mistaken), the one in the pit is smaller with less options, but the others have plenty to choose from. Drinks are a little pricey, but beer is reasonable and I have seen specials, so look for those! They serve food, though I've not ordered it, the bartender I spoke to made everything sound really great! Ticket prices are on point with other venues if not priced a little less. (love that!) Every month it seems their list of great acts continues to grow. The only downside for me is now choosing which shows I simply can't miss! Sadly the place is racist I was there Thursday April 29 for the pop up cocktail and jazz they have in front of the theater. I got in line, it wasn't crowded, it was just me and a person in front of me. I waited nicely for 5 mins to get my turn. A white couple walked by, cut the line, ignore me and quickly got the tickets, it happen so quick that I couldn't have a chance to say excuse me.. the receptionist didn't say anything. But I didn't care much, some time it happen. Now it's my turn. Also white man just arrived, and I kind of smile and said there's a line. I talked to the receptionist to get a ticket for 1, get a drink and enjoy the music. The receptionist said sorry, tickets are sold out and then I left my phone number in the waiting list I saw 2 tickets left on the desk. But I didn't think much, I just acknowledged it and wait a bit would not hurt, I'm the only one in the waiting list. But as soon as I step aside, she greet the white man next in line, he asked for ticket for 1 and he got it! Oh man... It was so disappointed. There is no point to confront, even if I got the ticket, there is no mood to enjoy it any more. I was not welcomed there. I can't believe I've never been inside this venue before. Many years ago the Rocky Horror Picture Show played here every Friday at midnight as I recall. I kept promising myself I'd go, yet there went that unfulfilled self-indulgence. Recently, a couple of decades later, I stumbled across a posting for the DMX 20th Anniversary concert. I certainly couldn't pass up the opportunity to snag up some tickets (or so I thought). First, I tried several times to arrange a trip to the box office to avoid extra fees, but their meager open for business hours proved impossible for me to access. Instead we got tickets online for a premium via Ticketfly. The day before the concert Ticketfly alerted DMX fans that doors were opening at 8pm and DMX would be on stage at 9pm sharp. I've seen DMX and I knew that statement was laughable but such a ruse isn't always clear to the average fanatic so I knew to arrive in a timely fashion to avoid too much chaos. As it were doors opened as promised and hoards of folks eventually made their way inside to bring bearable chaos to the area beside the reserved seats we occupied. Luckily the crowd never erupted into a riot even after waiting 2.5 hours beyond the 9pm sharp promise for Dark Man X's appearance. Yes, some of the crowd viciously heckled the deejay and some people left before the performance, but overall most folks maintained their composure. As for the venue, it is much larger then most movie theaters but seems smaller than many music concert venues. The temperature was kept cool even with hoards of people. From where I was sitting on tier one the sound system was excellent which is exactly what is required at a concert. The bar drinks were sized appropriately, but the food (tater tots) was way too salty and lacking in ingredients (compared to the Oakland coliseum for example). Thankfully our server was extremely pleasant and fairly efficient especially considering the hoards of general admission ticket holders who gathered in what should have been her thoroughfare. Ticketfly should be ashamed for misleading patrons, DMX owes everyone on earth a free full length concert (he was on stage for 50min), but the chill employees of the UC Theatre were fabulous top to bottom. read more

The sound quality was spot on and the stage easily handle the 15-20 people The Boss's guitarist brings with him. Bar service was exceptional with a killer selection of great beer, wine & spirits. Turley frickin' Zin on the menu! Really!! Had killer local beers from Fieldworks and Trumer....just need to add Goldman's to the menu!! This is a great venue to see any show at, space is plentiful (So Long As Tickets Aren't Oversold), drinks are reasonably priced (Comparable To Other "Clubs"), and security liaisons are always on standby and well alert of the surrounding events( Mosh Within Reason/No Fighting). The renovations that have been completed in this theatre are top notch, the table set up works well with the intimate lighting, and the separation between the private seating and the general admission "pit"; adds a certain level of comfortability. Also, the crystal laden chandeliers are a nice addition to the atmosphere and overall presentation, they not only look appealing, but they also do an excellent job in picking up every surrounding light source and distributing it back to the crowd. read more

As someone who goes to a lot of shows, I had to stop and write a review after seeing Reel Big Fish here last night. Great sound (though maybe I'm biased from all the shitty engineering at Warped Tour), and the venue was easy to get in and out of. Parking was pretty easy to find (on a thursday night around 8:30). There was light security in the front that was just checking for weapons, and then a double line inside - one to check tickets and another for ID. Walking in there's a large merch area that's off to the side. Through there you go into the main area. I coat checked for 3 bucks (again, painless). Multiple tiered seating areas and bars (but I just got one drink on the main level and took it to the pit area). Speaking of the pit area.. this place was packed and raucous for a Thursday. High energy crowd that knew how to make a proper circle pit and flexibly knew when to let it die or to clear space. Solid bay area music venue that I've added to my list of calendars to watch. The only weird part is that they don't have ins and outs, just this odd little fenced in area right in front that the smokers go to. It's fine, but if you need air between sets, it'll be smokey. read more

They really have transformed a historic movie venue, into a really interesting space for concerts. The tiers of the dance floor give everyone a good view the stage, and there is always easy access to bars. I love coming to concerts here and I can't wait for them to re-open from this Pandemic COVID-19. read more

I was really impressed with the management of the venue and the staff members were so nice! Usually, venue security gives people a hard time, but the people at UC Theatre were really kind about how they communicated the venue rules and regulations. I had a few questions and a staff member very kindly answered them, and the people at the coat check were very chill. I can't comment on the food and drink as I was quite invested in the show, but the venue is very beautiful inside. I also really love their initiative to teach local youth about the industry and share real-world knowledge with people who might not otherwise have an opportunity to explore relevant careers. read more

I must be getting too old or something because waiting four hours for an artist to come out on stage, literally made me almost fall asleep while standing up! Whoo. I arrived at 8 PM for the Ty Dolla Sign concert; which I was super excited to attend by the way, and he didn't come out until 11 P.M! Literally passed my bedtime; I was so disappointed. When you get a certain age no one can get in the way of your sleep, even a damn concert. Plus, now that this new marijuana law passed, these young kids have the nerve to just pull out a joint and just blow that smelly sh!t all in my face; ugh! Yes, I am getting way too old. But enough about that! This review is for the venue. First off, parking is a b!tch! I'm serious! All these businesses' poppin' up in Berkeley and there's no phuckin' parking, just terrible! I parked in a garage hella far away! Good luck with finding street parking. I would seriously recommend just getting an Uber or Lyft and making your life so much easier. I would have never known that UC Theatre was here if it wasn't for the concert I recently attended. I must admit, this venue is absolutely beautiful! Who would have ever thought!? Wow... just wow. You know when you walk in and your kids room is clean? (Or in my case, come in and find out that my poodles has been freed from his kennel but nothing is destroyed.) That kinda of wow... o.o! Its flawless. Expect this review to be very wow-y (I know it's not a word! But by gosh darn it! If the wiggles can make up words, why cant I? [Ah flippity boink Monger!]) So, without further introductions! Let us commence! *que up it's a wonderful life music!* Atmosphere: Wow just wow. .. (3 hours of saying wow non-stop) *cough* walking in you get the sensation of a beautiful 1950s theater. The entrance doors are huge enough for a large crowd to come through. (No longer will you drop your phone on the ground and get pushed into the side of the door while you pray to whatever spirit or peace of pizza you put your beliefs into, unto why this would be your final moments.) Walking into the main event hall was breathtaking. Huge space, seating was coordinated accordingly to the space that was given (no longer would just see a patch of chairs randomly stationed in a room like a desperate guy trying to grow out his patchy beard and all you want to do is pat him and tell him "it's not happening bro."), with the bar on the back top of the set (you'll get get your knickers faster than a wallaby making friends with a meerkat.), the huge chandeliers on the ceiling give it a divine and classy touch (which makes me feel, drinking my cheap over priced beer as a fancy guy.) The stage is visible and they even do catering! .o. Let's talk about the bathrooms. (cuz let's be flipping dolphin honest! We all came for the bathroom review.) Its gorgeous. Compare to other venue restrooms, these are checked on a daily. (Now you can rest assure that you wont feel like you're taking a 2 on the side of the San Francisco bridge. [Although if your there! I left some toilet paper for you guys. You're welcome.]) Sound/Service: The sound is exceptionally well. For such a big place, the acoustic is pretty good. (Like listening on your over priced Beat head phones. [Did you know it only cost 10 dollars to make! And that's with all the peaces put together. ._.]) Security is friendly and well coordinated. (Like a flock of ducks flying south [Ready to mighty duck you, if you step out of line!!! O.O]) Getting drinks and merch was fast and friendly and I'd almost confuse it with a fast food joint (minus the random pee stains on the ground and random peaces of garbage scatter about like a teenagers rebel state room.) Conclusion: This by far is one of the greatest venues in California. Which gets a solid poodle high five! *poodle holds paw up and waits for your hand to make the awesome clash of most awesome high fives the world has ever encountered!!!*.. did you do it?? ._. While I'm at it the sound system is crazy great, it was just part of the revitalization of this hundred-year-old plus theater. I'd leave zero stars, if I could. A concert was cancelled due to COVID-19, and The UC Theatre posted on social media in April that all refunds would be issued within 14 days. Here we are, three days shy of July, and I still don't have my money back. I've contacted the venue about two dozen times in all conceivable ways, and, if they respond at all, they lie and tell me my money will come in 14 days or 30 days or some other random amount of time. Nope, nope, nope. Went to Steel Pulse last night, and while they and New Kingston were fantastic, the bartenders were mostly hella rude, they had a chick with wannabe Betty bangs who didn't know how to make a Cadillac margarita! Another one slammed her hands on the counter several times, yelling about how that particular section of the counter was "FOR THE SERVERS!!!" Like damn bitch chill, I wasn't even wanting order another crappy margarita, it's not always about you, and did it escape your mind that the fucking room was crowded??? Wow... The ushers were pretty hostile, barking orders at patrons going outside to smoke. My friend jokingly added, "OR YOU WILL BE SHOT!!" But yeah, fuck this place. read more

I have no idea how they are allowed to have street bar as they dont directly serve food (have proof in email as i asked them) which means non compliance with coutny rules. talk with Countly ONLY bars WITH food NOT BYO but they actually serve food/ cook food at establishment are suppose to be open. Im dumb founded that COB and UC theater would flaunt the rules like this and have such disregard for safety of others during covid because its more important they are open and make $$$ just appalling . they arent selling foods with drinks which means they are going against county and state laws when comes to covid and keeping people safe by following rules read more

Saw Lukas Graham here over the weekend and was amazed with this venue! It is gorgeous inside, there are multiple bars and I never had to stand in line for a drink, the drink prices were not outrageous which seems to a rarity these days. There was standing room next to the stage and a balcony seated are which was a nice touch. I found out just prior to the show that the theatre is a non profit that runs internships which I love and think is just so cool. Overall it was a great experience!!
