I really enjoyed my Mezcal "The Last Word", and my clients were also entertained. I was having a good time at The Tipsy Alchemist with a group of five coworkers. We were respectful, enjoying ourselves, and I personally had only two drinks by around 10:00 PM. On top of the automatic 20% gratuity that was added without notice, I was even tipping an additional 5%. Despite this, I was singled out and told by security that "the guy in the cap has to leave, as requested by our bartender." When I asked multiple times why I was being asked to leave, neither security nor staff could give me a reason or explanation. I was not intoxicated, disruptive, or doing anything that would justify being removed--especially while the rest of my group was allowed to stay. Being kicked out in front of my coworkers with no explanation was embarrassing, confusing, and completely unprofessional. Targeting a single guest without cause or communication is unacceptable. This experience left a very bad impression, and I won't be returning. read more

My recommendation if you're going on the weekend, try to go a bit early if you want to get a seat.. we were there right at 9:00 and we were able to sit on the couches and really relax and have our cocktails and listen to cool tunes.. They had some great cocktail. Spy ended up having a Tito's lemon drop maybe two. The service is great. Experienced firsthand prejudice from the "lady" who was working the desk at around 12:30am Saturday night/Sunday morning. The sign said no cargo shorts, and the men we were with had them on, so she said we could come in only if we buy a bottle for $300 dollars. We said absolutely not and continued to walk out. We then saw about 2-3 Caucasian men wearing cargo shorts and she let them in with no problem. We then asked her how and why and she said it's because in her opinion, they looked nice. Mind you, the men we were with (whom are black) were well put together and one had a collar shirt on. Then she said "well they are here all the time and it's at my discretion". Unfortunately for her, there's no asterisk by that no cargo pants rule that says "unless I think you look nice, and/or a regular , or you pay $300 for a bottle" lawsuit coming soon. read more

Came here one night after dinner at Sixty Vines. We sat upstairs in the section in the back. It was cozy and we got good service back there even tho it was kind of out of the way. The first drink I had was Halloween themed and was not tasty so I swapped it out for a couple of espresso martinis that hit the spot. We visited on a Saturday night around 9:00pm. They weren't too busy yet, but the venue was already pretty loud and a dj was setting up for the night. It's a pretty cool spot, but definitely more of a bar or club scene than what we were expecting based on photos and the drink menu. I thought it'd be more like a cocktail lounge. Everyone enjoyed their drinks and I was so appreciative they threw together a mocktail for me despite not having any on their menu. The service was excellent, too. DO NOT COME HERE. My partner and I showed up to The Tipsy Alchemist ready to enjoy some cocktails. The bouncers told me that I was not allowed to enter because I was in violation of their dress code--which specifies "NO CASUAL OPEN TOE SHOES (I.E. SLIDES, FLIP FLOPS, OR BIRKENSTOCKS)." (I was wearing $200 Suicoke sandals). I understand that businesses are allowed to hold and enforce dress codes of their choosing. However, The Tipsy Alchemist SELECTIVELY chooses how they enforce their dress code. Neither their website nor the giant placard at the building's entrance (which features at least one typo) specifies in any way that the dress code is gender-specific. However, shortly after I (a gay man) was denied entry for wearing sandals, a woman entered the building wearing sandals. She was allowed in. The dress code DOES NOT SPECIFY which genders are allowed or not to wear sandals, and indeed, the sweeping generalizations it makes seem to indicate a kind of universal application. This was not the case at all; when my partner and I pointed out that a woman was allowed to enter while wearing sandals and I was not, the bouncer said, "She's a woman" -- as if this indicated some logical consistency. The Tipsy Alchemist has a weirdly moralistic--and inconsistently enforced--dress code. Why is this dress code--WHICH DOES NOT SPECIFY GENDER--enforced for me but not others? If they are going to try and restrict people from paying $20 for a mediocre cocktail, they should at least be consistent about it. They can't even spell their rules correctly on the placard! Save your money--go spend it elsewhere, and at a more deserving business that doesn't restrict their clientele's shoe choice based on a gender that remains unspecified in the actual written material of its policy. read more

We went on a Wednesday night for live music and we were not disappointed with the band that had the place packed when we walked in at 10pm!! Ivan, the bartender, was constantly busy working the service well, but was still able to chat with us at the bar and keep our cocktails full. Very creative craft cocktail menu with their watermelon signature drink being a must-try (it's delivered from one side of the bar to the other through an old bank teller tube that travels around/across the bar ceiling!!). Ambiance. I got there early, before 9 on a Saturday night and it wasn't quite empty but not yet packed. It quickly filled up and by 10 it was comfortably full. Not packed per se, but I ALMOST felt bad for having snagged one of the smaller tables for myself. As a lone traveler I thought I'd grab a seat at the bar, but alas they take away the stools on Saturdays because they expect it to get so packed that the stools are more a hindrance than an asset. Fair enough. Having said that, I was quickly offered a table when I realized the error of my ways, the hostess was gracious and found me a table where I could watch the entire place, it was great. Walked in for drinks on Saturday night and got the patio seating. Hostess was sweet and so was our server, however, they are severely understaffed (or that's what it felt like). Once we got inside we headed upstairs as the main floor and bar were already full. Upstairs was much quieter and we were able to put in drink orders. Our entire party ordered various drinks from the cocktail menu, and they were pricy--averaging to $20/drink before tip. (I ordered a ginger ale also and that was over $5!) For cocktails, I had a "Night Night, Sleep Tight" and "Living the Pina Loca", two very different drinks and I didn't like either of them. The two heaviest drinkers in our group had one drink apiece that neither finished. None of the drinks actually tasted good, which was very disappointing. However, after recently returning I fear it wasn't quite the same. Immediately after walking in everything felt different this time around. They have a decent music selection playing, but $40 for one mid cocktail and a glass of wine. They are very strict about dress coding men, so keep that in mind if you're wearing open toed shoes.
