And by that I mean not a hunting cabin or the Bates Motel. After some looking I stumbled upon this little gem. We needed to be close to Ewen and this place fit the bill. I had wanted to book their whirlpool suite but it was taken :( So I booked a 2 bedroom suite for my Dad and also one for the b/f and I. Only because it was the same price as a single bed suite...so why not. (Summer prices are cheap!) Rooms were large, clean, and comfortable. We had a room on the second floor with a private deck that overlooked the grounds and the millions of deer that live in the UP. OH! One important factoid... the stairs going up to the second floor rooms are HORRIBLE. Metal grates that obviously don't hold onto salt - so you are basically walking up stairs made of ice. The railing too. Try walking up that drunk... yeesh. Anyways, the rooms are fantastic. Our heater made an absolute ton of noise so the second night we stayed in the second bedroom and closed the door and it was fine. They also have an onsite restaurant that is open on the weekends during the summer. Blew me away. If this review were just for the restaurant I'd give it 5 stars. We had a few bottles of wine to start. Also cheese curds cause we are from Wisconsin... Delish. We all also got chicken and rice soup which blew all other soups I have ever had out of the water. My dad is a chef and he RAVED about it. I ordered the walleye, pan fried and boston baked potato. The walleye was huge, tender, needed some salt but it was delicious. The potato was the same. I also ordered a side of deep fried frog legs...why not right? FANTASTIC. My Dad ordered their ribeye and it was one of the best steaks he has had. I was envious of his taste buds! I tried the steak...amazeballs. The b/f had the fish fry, it again was great. The batter wasn't as crispy as he would have liked but the fish was incredible and the seasonings were spot on. If you need a clean, affordable place to stay - you have to stay here. Nothing else compares to this. And you MUST eat here. Even if you don't stay at the hotel. EAT THIS FOOD!!!!!!

All of the food arrived hot and delicious at the same time. The Root Cellar is under new management, and the wife and husband team are charming. They have a few options here in terms of size and price, but the main area is easily accessible from everywhere. Even though it's just a short distance from town, you feel like you're way out in the woods. Our cabin was clean and comfortable, with a couple different sleeping areas, a full kitchen, fridge, etc. I brought home a day's fishing catch and cooked it up right there. If you come with a larger group they have central fire pits and grilling areas and a couple big party shelters protected from the rain. They have WiFi throughout the property, which you'll probably need as I had no cell service up here. There was a baby deer on the property whose mother came by periodically to check. There's a sauna and a barn with bikes for everyone to use. Super peaceful and relaxing vacation.

And let me tell you, after 4 days of hiking and camping and an 8 mile kayak trip prior to arriving... that hot tub was a godsend. We also had a lovely fireplace in the room too - but had no need for it. The cottage was clean and our private patio backed up to the wooded area. We also had our own grill. It was absolutely wonderful. There is a trail that you can walk that goes along Superior's shoreline that will take you into town too if you don't want to drive... only 1.5 miles. I should mention that after we left and were on our way back home (alllllll the way to Kenosha) I realized that I left my necklace there! It's not worth any money, it just has significant personal value to me. The owner, who is sweet as pie by the way, mailed it to me. I had it within a week. They offer larger cabins for family stays as well. This place is a must see. Last year we heard that he was trying to sell off the cabins... I hope hope hope they are there this fall! We'd like to stay again!

Fair prices on boat rentals, and you have a gas deposit where you get back the money for whatever gas money you don't use. Boats are pet friendly which was nice since we had our dog with us on the trip! There was live bait available to purchase if you plan to do some fishing. Our only complaint was that there is no one sitting at the boat rental counter, the bar tender is the one you go through. She was very busy at the time, and it took a long time to return the boat.

The owner is very nice…read moreand also extremely knowledgeable in regards to the surrounding area - at check in he let us borrow several books about the Porcupine Mountains, Ontonagon County, waterfalls, etc, which was helpful since it was our first visit to the UP. We stayed in the motel portion (there are 7 rooms together on one side of the property as the 'motel' and several cabins on the property are also available. Room 7 faces the lake and is the room to get! The resort is located on the lake and there are firepits, grills, wood, and kayaks that guests can use (for free.) The rooms are basic but clean, which in my opinion is the most important thing. The motel rooms have a refrigerator, microwave, cable, and free wi-fi access. The mini fridge was large enough that we were able to store most of our food, comfortably, that we had planned on grilling and cooking for the week. The fridge also has a small but functional freezer. The rooms and cabins are next to each other, so if you're looking to be miles away from other people this wouldn't be the place for you. But having said that, sharing the beach front, grills, firepits, we felt that we had adequate privacy, and over the course of the stay we met some really nice guests. The beach front was gorgeous and guests can walk the lakefront in both directions for miles (although a few spots you'll need to wade across spots where the Big and Little Cranberry rivers run thru) so bring your beach shoes. Oh, did I mention that it's pet friendly! Yeah, what more can you ask? Superior Shores, while not being luxurious, is clean with many amenities (lakefront, grills, firepits, kayaks, close to Porkies/waterfalls/Lake Gogebic). Superior Shores is a great place to stay, and be sure to ask for Room 7 if you're staying in the motel. Also, be sure to get some local pasties in Ontonagon.
