The atmosphere is fantastic -- it truly feels like you're up north in the Northwoods. It has that cozy, laid-back ski vibe that makes you want to hang out after your runs. The food is reasonably priced and always hits the spot. Drinks at the bar are a little on the expensive side, but that's pretty typical for ski hills. I've never had an issue with any staff members -- everyone has always been friendly and helpful. Service upstairs in The Hideout can be a bit slow at times, especially during busy hours, but it's nothing that ruins the experience. Overall, it's a great place to ski, relax, and spend the day. Highly recommend -- especially if you're looking for that true Northwoods feel.

Their location is good for being so close to the Porcupine Mountains State Park, but there are…read moreseveral other places nearby at considerably lower cost. We paid $190 per night (incl. tax). One of the features that attracted us was their in-cabin fireplaces, so we thought we would splurge a bit and pay the high price. Come to find out, the fireplaces are "closed" each summer until Sept. 15th, something that is NOT mentioned on their website. We didn't find this out until we were locked into our reservation. If they had acknowledged that their website should state that their fireplaces are seasonal and that they would correct it, it wouldn't have bothered me so much. Instead I was told "you should have asked". On the first day of our stay, it was low 50's with strong winds and rain. A fire in the fireplace would have been a nice option. Other complaints: the WIFI barely registered, the mattresses seemed to be on the inexpensive side, and the sheets were cotton/poly blend. On the plus side, the cabins are clean and modern, and the beach is nice.

This rest area is easy enough to navigate and is not very large. I would expect that in the busy travel season, it gets quite full. The tourist information center is stocked with all sorts of brochures, organized by the different regions of Michigan so you're sure to find something interesting if you're stopping in the state. I found a few things for this trip and added a few bookmarks for the next one. I had a very nice chat with the woman staffing the center. Very pleasant, very helpful. There are clear signs that overnight parking is not permitted but I believe that if you're decent about it - no camping, no slideouts and especially no cooking - you should be okay to spend the night here. It warmed up in the afternoon but was nice a cool for sleeping. We stayed with another couple on our site and it was a tight squeeze. The sites here are very small so keep that in mind if you are traveling with a large group. In order to get a spot right on the lake you have to book 6 months in advance and it is totally worth it. You can hear the waves crashing onto the beach from your tent and it is well worth booking a trip so far in advance. We stayed in spot #1 for a four day trip. It was a short walk down to the beach where we watch the sunrise every morning. The bathrooms were nice and well cleaned. There is a camp sponsor who stays a month at a time on the campground to help organize events. My only complaint is the fire pits didn't have grates or anything for you to cook over so that meant becoming buddy-buddy with our neighbor to borrow supplies. The hiking was amazing. There were plenty of good trails within a 20 min drive of the area. We had such a good time exploring the area. I will stay that the trails are extremely muddy after a good rain but after two days they dry out pretty well. We didn't explore any of the restaurants but there are several within 30 mins drive. Overall I can't wait till we can go back to this campground and I would highly recommend this mountain range to anyone in the Midwest.

My family and I have been coming here for over 25 years. This year, we decided to rent 2 cabins to…read moreaccommodate everyone. That is over $1700 we paid for the week, no big deal. On our second day, the septic system started backing up into the shower when my fiancé was showering. When we went to tell the owners, it was like they were just waiting for us to tell them. They weren't surprised, they did not apologize. They told us we'd have to switch to another cabin, this one at LEAST 30 years older than the cabin we had chosen (which is why we chose the newer cabin, obviously). We declined. We said we would use that bathroom and the bathroom of my parents cabin (up a very steep hill) until they could get ours fixed. No one ever came to fix it. We spent the entire week walking to a different cabin to use the restroom and to shower. Even washing the dishes had to be done in a way so that the septic wouldn't back up into the kitchen sink! When it came to the end of our stay and it was time to pay, we expected them to offer us a discount at least. That didn't happen. When we asked for one, one of the owners became extremely hostile. She said she offered us a different cabin and we declined, so we should pay full price! We explained the cabin offered as a replacement was in no way comparable to the one we had reserved and put a deposit on more than SIX months previously. She was extremely rude and told us they'd give us $100 off "take it or leave it". It's heartbreaking that after 25 years, we'd be treated so poorly. Alas, we won't be continuing our tradition of coming to this place.
