Never again. I booked an onsite property at Snow River…read moreMountain Resort and only realized after checking in that I had accidentally booked two rooms. Despite staying for the weekend and the resort being practically empty, they refused to cancel even part of the reservation or offer a future credit because it wasn't canceled 30 days in advance. My mistake ended up costing me $600. None of the front desk staff seemed to have the authority to make decisions about refunds. The only person who could--Teegan--had no direct line, never responded, and despite calling for an entire week, I never once spoke to her. To make matters worse, the unit above us had a water leak, and our bathroom ceiling literally collapsed. Still no refund, no compensation, not even an apology from management. I have great memories of skiing these hills back when they were Indian Head and Black Jack. Sadly, after this experience, I won't be returning.

The ski hill centers around a high speed 6 person lift, which runs very well with friendly staff. Buy your lift tickets online (it is cheaper), then you get RFID card at the outside ticket counter. Do the waivers online ahead of time, will save time as well. The runs are well groomed, fairly well marked. Lots of variety, good for beginner to advanced skiers. Additional lifts are present throughout the terrain, with really nice, friendly lifties. I highly recommend as a destination ski area for the Midwest. MFSR has spent $15 million upgrade this hill, and it shows.

Tucked away in the beautiful upper…read morepeninsula (U.P.) of Michigan, by the Portage Canal, overlooking the city of Houghton and the campus of Michigan Technological University, this ski hill remains my favorite in the country. I've been to places like Snowbird and Brighton, but Ripley just has that charm you can't find elsewhere. It's small. The vertical is just over 400 ft, has about 25 trails and only one chair lift and a T-bar. Now the exciting stuff. The hills are shaped like a ski-jumping ramp. It's steep near the top, and flattens out near the bottom (where the bunny hill is). This means you can acquire speed very quickly - enough speed to hit the quarter-pipe, tabletops, and other fun stuff in the terrain park on your way down. There're quite a few black-diamond runs, and a double-diamond. For adventurous skiers/snowboarders, there're plenty of woods in between trails. There's even a small cliff, just to the right of the T-bar on the way up, for powder-day audacity. I'm a snowboarder and by nature I tend to explore the roads less traveled. This place is perfect for exploration. In addition, given its small size, your knees can get the rest they need between runs, and get ready for the next adventure. This is especially true for snowboarders. When your muscles are fatigued, you can't initiate turns and can easily end up in the patrol room. Ski patrol. I used to patrol there for five years, and Ripley has the highest patrol-to-customer and lowest accident-per-day ratios I've seen. The patrol body consists of local old-timers as well as Michigan Tech students. It's extremely well-organized, well-trained, well-disciplined, and of course, friendly :) Kids. I think I've seen more kids there than adults - and most kids are really, pretty good! Lessons, either in groups or one-on-one, are available to people of all ages and skill levels. The trail conditions. They make snow prior to the start of the season, so there's always plenty of base. The U.P. gets more than 200" of snow on average, so you can count on many powder days with pristine snow. Most trails are groomed and they groom it well. Night skiing is available daily, and trails are well-lit. The view. One of the reasons I love this place so much is the ability to scan the entire horizon as you look down from the hilltop. Ripley faces south, meaning it gets plenty of sunlight. Few things beat the view of a quiet sunset from a mountain top. There're special events throughout the season, e.g., Winter Carnival in February, Slush Pit (there's a funny youtube video) in March, and various ski & snowboard races and competitions like Big Air. All these make for a perfect place for both beginners and experts. And when you're done for the day, head to any of the local microbreweries!

Great Midwest resort. If you are used to skiing small hills in the Midwest, this resort gives you…read morea break from that small hill feel. We skied three days. As a person who skis out west every year, I was leery in booking three days at a Midwest resort. But the weather, snow conditions, and mountain conditions were all great. We were there over Feb 13-15. One of the rare warm ups of February. We skied in three days of bluebird sun. Absolutely fabulous. It was 40 degrees one of the days and the mountain held up fine. The grooming also was good on days two and three. The amount of back country they have is fine, but you need a good 2 feet or more to truly enjoy it. But, that wasn't this trip. Three complaints. Ticket office, lift lines, and food service. The ticket office was slow. On a Friday morning of a holiday weekend, they only put two people in the office and not everyone can do everything. So you can't approach a window with a flex pass, because that goes to a different window and so forth. Poor design. Plus once you are at the ticket office, the process to get you all set was also slow. There was one redeeming light, Friday afternoon, I was served by an efficient young woman who greeted me with a smile, was quick to get me what I needed an got me on my way under 2 minutes at the window. That's how its got to be across the board. They had a bunch of windows, but no manpower. Lift lines were an oozing mess of people. In typical midwestern ignorance, everyone simply kept funneling into the lift area with no direction or idea of what they are doing. Forming groups of six was a challenge for most groups on our trip. This slowed capacity significantly on a busy day. Caribou Express had a line of 30 plus on both sides. Its not difficult to sort this all out. But, singles never paired up with groups until they simply saw a spot open up in front of them. It was silly. The majority of these folks would be yelled at incessantly out west. Only once on Saturday was there a lifty sorting out the mass hysteria in the lift line. He was needed both Saturday and Sunday. The food service on Moose Mountain was poorly designed. There is a bar, but the only canned items you can get are seltzers. To increase efficiency, get rid of the bar and replace with a walk through area where those of age can grab a can of whatever they'd like and purchase it. Overall, I would go again. The views were spectacular. The skiing was great. Just a few annoyances.

I recommend going to Charlie's on the resort and to checkout the live music on late nights. The hot tub was great after hours of snowboarding too. So much fun we might make this trip annually! Lutsen is awesome!

Check-in was fast and seamless; room was clean and comfortable; proximity to Lake Superior was nice. We enjoyed watching the waves from the little slice of beach the hotel had behind it; there is a also a bonfire pit and quite a few comfy outdoor benches here, as well as some picnic benches nearby for folks wanting to enjoy a picnic outside. As far as restaurant options locally: the hotel is attached to one of the few restaurants in the area, so that was a good fall back on option. We passed on eating there after reading some of the reviews, choosing to go into downtown Ontonagon instead (check out Syl's!) and Antonio's (about 20-30 mins away off of 64 & 28). Again, it's just nice to have the choice nearby if you're tired of driving. Reasons this hotel didn't get a solid 5 star review is: first, the staff are not particular friendly, never greeted us all the times we walked past/obviously had questions. We had to initiate conversation with them. Secondly, although the hotel had signs saying masks are required by state mandate, some staff were not wearing masks, relying on the plexiglass barrier only.
