Went to Thayer on a Friday night, it wasn't terribly busy. Upon arrival, I was very bummed it was raining because the patio seating looked lovely. We sat inside and the decor was dated and a dingy. There was also food smeared on the wall near our table, and the tablecloths were noticeably sticky. The drinks were decent. I ordered an Irish coffee, which was well-made and enjoyable. Things went downhill once we ordered food. I asked our waitress for a recommendation between the walleye and the salmon. She said, "Well, I'm partial to fish so I would say the walleye." I did order the walleye but the dish came out cold and lacked flavor. To top it off, it was served on a plastic, fish-shaped plate--not what you'd expect for a $22 entrée. My husband ordered the steak and shrimp with mashed potatoes. When his meal arrived, the potatoes were missing. He let the waitress know, but after waiting 15 minutes with no sign of them, he asked to cancel the side. Even after our entire party had finished eating, the waitress didn't come back for another 15 minutes. We asked for the check, and still had to wait another 10 minutes before she returned--without the bill. Overall, the service was slow and inattentive, and the food was mediocre at best. While the drinks were okay, it wasn't nearly enough to make up for the rest of the experience. For the price, we definitely expected better. We will not be returning. read more

We went to the Thayer with a party of nine. The ambiance was excellent and the waitress great as well. But the kitchen service and management was horrible. It took forever, other large tables turned over while we were there. Five of us got our meals, three of those were cold. The other two got there meals with no sides, by the time their sides came they were done. We cancelled the last two meals and complained to the assistant manager. She blamed it all on the waitress, she was very rude and unprofessional. She got the manager, who had told him we were going to other tables to complain about the service which was a down and out lie. No one in our party had left the table or had talked to anyone and the assistant manager was the only to raise her voice. He seemed surprised but I pretty sure he believed what we were telling him and he just left. We paid online and gave the waitress cash for her tip and requested she not share it. I would never normally order chicken strips but a friend said I had to try them. It's an app so we ordered them and they are amazing! Huge! Enough for two people for a meal and battered in a crunchy crust. The drinks come out slow but all the food is really good. My burger was very good and the steak bite app was also amazing. read more

Server was very friendly and nice but, other than service, our experience was underwhelming. Walleye was full of bones, top sirloin was tough and hard to chew, garden salad is not included without an extra charge. I find it interesting that this place features a historic style, demonstrating a warm "European" feel with decor, and yet they played iHeart radio with 70's rock music throughout our dinner. Date night with the wife and recommended by a friend. The service was excellent. The waitress was knowledgeable and willing to make wonderful recommendations. We went with everything she suggested and had a tremendous evening. The steaks were excellently flavored and cooked exactly like we ask. The shrimp appetizer was perfectly seasoned and the desert was delightful. It's an old style decor, think fancy 1880's, which stayed true to form if you like that kind of thing. We like going to the Thayer. The food is good and the place has a cool retro feel. This time we were in a little back room that was beastly hot! Everyone had sweat dripping from their faces including our server. That was a bit of a disappointment, but it won't stop us from going back. I had the Salmon Oscar and it was very tasty!! read more

A nice little establishment on the bottom floor of a historic hotel. An antiquish setting. Service is fairly good. The food is hit or miss. The steak tips are fantastic as they come with a very tasty mushrooms sauce. Oh, goodness were they good. I actually had them for dessert! Seems to be a bit overpriced for what you get, but price isn't too big of an issue if the good is good. And, with the economy the way it is right now, everything seems to be more expensive. read more

We have frequented this restaurant multiple times and my wife and I have ordered the exact same dish every time. The food quality and portion sizes have varied each time with this last visit literally half the size between the three dishes we were served. It's like buying a lottery ticket and hoping it's "normal portion size day", lol. If you want to take your chances, this is the place for you. Good luck, you're going to need it! read more

I had been eating to try The Thayer since it opened. Stopped in for lunch today and couldn't have been more pleased. We were warmly greeted in a timely manner. Our waitress was also warm and kind, welcoming and efficient. The wait time for our meals was excellent. I had the sweet chicken sandwich with fries and enjoyed every last morsel. My sister got the shrimp fettuccine. Perfect dear to the shrimp and the Alfredo sauce was delicious. Would certainly recommend it. An excellent, historic dining experience. read more

WORST SERVICE EVER!! AWFUL FOOD. Brand new 17 year old waitress had no idea what she was doing! We went with neighbors-had a band outside and was a beautiful Friday night! It was a summer Friday so why did they have an inexperienced girl outside that didn't know what she was doing? Took 2 hours to get our food (just 4 of us). UGH!! Walleye-no flavor. Sticky garlic mashed potatoes-a big pile of goo! Yuk. Everyone around us that came after us were getting served before us. The bills were messed up-ours on theirs, vise versa. Up charge for (hubby ordered) 'au gratin potatoes' which were under cooked cubed potatoes with melted cheese drizzled over them. Also terrible. My 2 drinks were both wrong. No one fixed them after I said I got the wrong drink. Hubby had Jack & Diet Coke, he said tasted like Jack & water. No apologies- we didn't have the checks fixed cuz figured it would be 1/2 hour or more! Very unfortunate as I will never go there again! (And we live nearby) read more

This is unfortunately not a great review ! Just because you have an only place to sleep inside a building does not give you the right to be unwelcoming and definitely not friendly ! We did arrive at early 4pm their check in time !! The entire staff was frazzled. Trying to play catch up from busy Father's Day meals to begin a promising dinner evening ! Initially we gave them the benefit of doubt. Busy and excuses! But learning they own other restaurants they should have performed with skill and grace. read more

Stopped in for a late dinner last night. It was the only place in town that the kitchen was still open after 9. We have been wanting to check this place out and we are so glad we did. We did arrive about 30 minutes to kitchen close so we didn't want to be "those" people. We peeked at the menu and both decided that the Thayer Deluxe Burger sounded tasty and would probably be easy on the cook who was undoubtedly trying to close the kitchen and go home. Our server was Jessica and she was friendly and helpful. Our burgers were top notch. Cooked to order and full of flavor. I actually spoke to the cook as well as we crossed paths and apologized for being those people coming in at the end of the night and she replied asking how our food tasted and that she couldn't have asked for a better order to end the night. I felt like the staff were all friendly. And I liked that no one had an attitude with us for coming in at the time we did or making us feel like we were and inconvenience to them. We will definitely be back here again, many of the other menu items sounded fabulous! read more

All the servers and bartenders are amazing. I highly recommend this restaurant for succulent food. I highly recommend the hotel for a historical, spooky experience. This is a review for the hotel, not the restaurant. First, the staff was wonderfully nice and they make writing a negative review hard. But this hotel would be a prime contender for one of those shows where a consultant, or Gordan Ramsey, comes in and fixes the place before it goes out of business. First, everything was overly decorated and frankly, ugly. And there was so much stuff and the lighting was so bad it just felt old and dusty. The shower was rage-inducing as I had no place to put even a bar of soap, not to mention the water temp would not stay consistent and the pressure left a lot to be desired. The only light source in the bathroom was a sconce about 6 inches away from the shower head. How this passes code I'm not sure, but it made me nervous as hell. There was a stain on the bed sheet, right were I'd be lying. (The bed was very comfortable however!) Last but not least, the night I stayed was very hot and the window unit AC was not cooling down our room. I pulled out the filter and it was obvious it had never been cleaned. So I cleaned it myself. This hotel is clearly struggling, and I'm sure this review will not help. But hopefully those who have the power to make some simple changes read this. I will go back and eat there, we only stopped in the bar for a drink but the food looked great and many folks were dining there, which is always a good sign. read more

I give it 4 stars only because we had a limited amount of food in one visit, so I'd have to go back again and try more items -- BUT I would definitely return if in the area, because what we had was excellent. This is a relatively newly refurbished and reopened hotel, very well done, and I hope it succeeds because it is a great addition to Annandale. Annandale residents and seasonal residents -- you need to patronize this place and see if you like it. Based on first contact, it is deserving of your business! read more

Decided to try someplace new on our drive to the cabin. I ordered Yummy deluxe burger that was piled high with toppings and juicy and my husband ordered the prime rib sandwich with bernaisse sauce. Delicious and messy. Required a fork to eat . They have outdoor seating and good service. Will definitely be going back. read more

We stopped for lunch and had a great meal. Over the top wedge salad and stuffed portabella mushrooms. Very delicious.

Food was okay at best. Added many extra toppings that weren't disclosed on the menu that took a lot of work getting fixed. Messed up my drink as well. Service was good. Overall, probably wouldn't come back. It was mediocre food and location as well. read more
