I have several food intolerances so when asking about the ingredients in their homemade cakes I got a message back via the waitress that she can't guarantee the cakes were free from what I was intolerant to. As people with food intolerances are always ending up having to go without gorgeous food, I asked if I could have more detail of what was in the cakes so I could make a decision on what it was I could or couldn't eat, just in case there was something I could have. This was very obviously an inconvenience to the waitress and the manager who had baked them. She tried again to say she couldn't guarantee anything because obviously this was the quickest way to solve the issue for herself, but after explaining that I'd like to try to see if there was something I could eat, it was again very plain that I was wasting her time. It was late afternoon and they weren't busy, so I would have appreciated a couple of minutes of her time without the attitude. After finding out there was indeed a piece of cake I could eat, I sat down to enjoy it only to be served it with more attitude by the waitress. If she could have got away with grunting at me I sure she would have! I unfortunately had to ask for a pot of hot water as the tea didn't come with one, and AGAIN got a look saying 'are you bothering me again?!'. Cleanliness was also not great with tea-stained table clothes, dying roses on the table, and also dust on the teapot holding the roses which was next to an open sugar bowl which no doubt had the same amount of dust in it! Also, amazingly, a dog walking around the kitchen area with it's bed behind the serving counter!! (Yes, I am about to inform environmental health dept!!) Lastly, my table was being cleared before I had finished. I did notice however, that the other table still in there didn't have their table touched, so I'm guessing that was a touch of nastiness from the waitress also. I was there looking for a place to take 18-20 friends for my birthday which is coming up soon as we fancied a gorgeous afternoon tea, but we will definitely be going somewhere else after that experience!

Reasons for being in Bishop's Stortford are few and far between. Reasons for staying there…read moreovernight are practically unheard of. However, if for some reason you do find yourself with a need to crash in the area and are not troubled by money matters - then the Down Hall Hotel is for you. The Down Hall Hotel is pretty amazing. I found it by mistake. Me and a friend of mine like to go for drives at 2am when the rest of the world is sleeping. We were driving around in the middle of nowhereville and saw this sign that was almost entirely hidden by hedges and looked as if it was made in 1842. It pointed out the direction to a hotel. We decided to follow it, hoping we'd be able to find a cup of tea. So we stumbled our way through the tiny country streets until eventually we came across the hotel. The Down Hall hotel doesn't look like your regular Holiday Inn. This place is a mansion. You feel like royalty in this place. Especially after you get a pot of tea and it costs you the same as a flight to Eastern Europe. I tend to not like places for the rich; as they tend to be pretentious. But this place was just kind of lovely. The rooms where you eat and drink look like places in 'The West Wing' where people used to have meetings. Just pure class, and great service. I've not stayed here - but we did go for a wander and managed to find a room that wasn't locked. It was pretty great. Spacious, comfortable and colourful. If you need to get away, then maybe this little place in Bishop's Stortford is just for you. The setting is idyllic and they even have some lovely grounds you can walk in. In fact, this place isn't too far from Stansted if you're looking for somewhere to stay the night before your flight (to Eastern Europe or otherwise)

We went economical through a 3rd party booking agency and it came out to about $125USD/night. By far one of the better decisions all trip. For the price alone this should be a 5 Yelp star hotel. Sure it's an hour and a half outside of London but transportation was easy. I'll get to that later. Room: We were given a great spot overlooking the entrance. It was a great view. Size wise it was bigger than expected with little added amenities that were extremely thoughtful (think heated towel rack and bath robes). Transportation. It's easy. We didn't have a car but... 1. A short taxi ride to Sawbridgeworth Train Station was $13USD each way and... 2. A Day Pass (for the overground/train, the underground/The Tube, and the buses) was about $40 USD/person each day. Transportation runs until midnight each night and was surprisingly easy (save for a 3 hour delay on the train when it broke down one night). *Go to Sawbridgeworth instead of Bishop Stortford to save $8USD per taxi ride. **Leave after 9:45am (peak time) to get cheaper Day Passes Staff: Very good. Had a few hiccups but it's expected. I was also told by one chap that I could use a microwave to heat up some pizza (it was 1am) while another chap firmly put him down and said that microwave use was not allowed. Awkward exchange right there but the night audit's job is tough to begin with. Note: Local calls from your hotel room aren't free. Had to learn this upon checkout but no biggie. Buy a SIM for your unlocked phone and use it.

What an awesome tea room! Literally on the Thames!…read more 7 of us booked a table for brunch and were not disappointed! This is quite a big barge and seats about 20 people comfortably, offering a great range of cream teas, sandwiches, breakfasts and drinks. A little quaint, traditional barge tea shop. The cups and saucers are just fabulous and the coffee mugs are varied - all adding to the variety and experience of this wonderful place. The tea is served in leaf form so you have your own strainer, which is really cool! I opted for a full breakfast today which was just right! Unfortunately they had ran out of bacon but I got an extra sausage for that! Locally sourced food which was cooked perfectly from the kitchen you can see at the end of the barge. All the staff were extremely friendly and helpful, offering their advice and explaining the food options as well. The service was excellent and relaxed. The most important part of finishing the meal is the separation of the bill, especially in a group. However they offered to spilt this and each of us pay separately, this worked great! Overall, this is place is highly recommended for anytime of the day, relaxing on the Thames, in wonderful surroundings, watching the swans swim by.

After several Google services, I came across Dotty's website, it is well put together and really grabbed my attention Seeing Dotty's in real life was like a dream. The establishment is beautifully decorated and you can tell the owner really invested in the place and the people who work there. There is a pink bicycle parked outside, the establishment is pink, the decor is very elegant--perfect for a photo op I opt to do the afternoon tea with Prosecco added on as well as some scones to go. It was a very fair price per person. Under £80 for the entire experience for 2 people. They also sell other assorted desserts, shakes and cakes All the employees were attentive, they explained in detail what our package came with and they made sure we were happy from start to finish. EVERYTHING was delicious! From the English tea down to the Pimms jello HIGHLY RECOMMEND 10/10!!

I stumbled on the listing while doing a search for tea places before I left Washington, DC to travel to London. Unfortunately I didn't make the reservation myself (relied on family in London to make it) so we didn't get booked for the afternoon tea service as I'd hoped and just had a reserved table instead. Still, I indulged in some scones with cream and strawberry jam, paired with a strong cup of decaf English breakfast tea. The staff is very friendly and took the time to explain the drink and pastry options to us. I hope I get a chance to visit again for the full tea service before the end of my trip!
