After driving through Hadleigh in search of somewhere for a devonshire afternoon tea, we ended up at crabtrees. It look promising but unfortunately was a let down. A little, quaint shop on the high street. On walking in I had to wait at the counter 10mins to have a table pointed out where I could sit. By the time hubby came in having parked the car a long distance away, I still hadnt been served, the table hadnt been cleared from the previous person & I didnt have a menu. Finally we served to find out that they don't even serve devonshire teas (scone, jam, cream & a cup of tea)! I asked if they didnt serve this as the norm, I'd pay extra to have some jam & cream, but they said they couldnt do that.
Despite coming out of the front counter & requiring no preparation, the scone took 20mins to arrive at my table- 2m away. It was the driest, hardest I have ever had. .When I pointed this out to the lady serving, she didnt appologise, but just said thats how they are.
Maybe we were there on a bad day, but that staff seemed too busy to care & the scones are dreadful. read more
