I visited Scrumptious Tearooms following a recommendation from some friends. I often pop into other establishments when I am out and about on business in Essex.
As a veteran of reviews on Trip Advisor I had heard that this relatively new site 'QYPE' was up and running so thought while away on business this week I would give it ago. When I saw the review Scrumptious was getting I decided to leave one for Scrumptious here, because like Trip Advisor I hate trolling.
So to Scrumptious I arrived and a very polite young lady (in a 1940's style dress) asked me if I needed a table for one then gave me a choice of the last two tables, one in their 'shop' (front area with pleasant 1940's music) and one in their 'parlour' (rear room with fireplace and no music). I chose the shop because Glenn Miller seemed to fit my mood and I was shown to a spotless table in the corner great view of the high street (as I enjoy people watching it was perfect).
There were two menus, one for drinks (huge array of teas) and one for food sandwiches, salads etc. With one eye of the great variety of cakes I chose a cheese and ham sandwich. Unsure of the tea I asked for advice the waitress (I think the owner) couldn't of been more helpful. After a few quick questions about my preferences she recommended the Darjeeling. Well I like my tea but this once probably the best cup of tea I've had I've never really tried Darjeeling before but certainly recommend Scrumptious' version. The owner even said that if I didn't think it was great she would replace it free of charge.
My sandwich arrived shortly after. A satisfactory portion for the price, with garnish and crisps at no extra charge. The bread was to die for when asked where it came from the gave me a card from Mayfield's Farm and also said they had a little cafe worth trying (this kind of recommendation is always a favourite of mine humble and selfless great for local trade). I polished off my late lunch with another pot of their Darjeeling and a slice of the best Victoria Sponge I have had since my Grandmothers.
It is rare that I give 5 stars for a place, but this ticked every box the place was very busy, but the efficiency of the young staff (all local apparently) was great. Thanks Scrumptious a truly excellent experience will be back! As for the other reviewersare you sure you got the right place?? read more
