We were incredibly pleased with how lovely the place is. Great outdoor dining area, and incredibly cosy inside. The staff were incredibly courteous, and the food was just unbelievably good. What they brought out to us was worth every penny. This is a fantastic little place, a hidden gem. Worth driving over an hour to go to, seriously.

As time went on we decided that we would like to stay and have dinner here but indoors as it was getting cold. There were 14 of us and they managed to fit us into the restaurant area on the proviso we ordered quickly before the 6:30pm booking arrived and one table had to vacate by 8pm. The staff were great and we did not feel that we were being rushed even though some people had starters. A lot of us picked from the specials board and the food came out devine and the service was outstanding. The place was busy as it was the jazz/fringe festival weekend so the clientelle was of all ages (a bit annoying having babies/kids screaming thoughout the meal) including elderly who came in through the fire door for easy access. I would definitely recommend this place which is also dog friendly. This place is soo good that Seasick Steve was playing there that evening and eating his dinner in the pub part as we left.

They don't sell packets of crisps, but they'll cook you some for £1.50, if they'd been friendlier and I'd have seen the little sign on the bar, behind the locals, I might have got some. We meant to return in the evening as the food looked good and at the best part of £20 a plate, it should be. Another reason not to return was, I'm not spending that money on a eight year old, to find she doesn't like it. Do a kids menu, Oh and if they do, let us the punters know.

Glad we did, we really enjoyed our stay. Room 5 was really large with three single beds. The room was well furnished and was very clean. The only complaint was their procedure of turning the heat off three times a day. If you want to sleep in past 8, be prepared for a cold room. The real surprise at The Bateman Arms was the restaurant. We were fortunate to have two dinners with them. Our first night, together we had crawfish/prawn salad, garlic mushrooms, veggie lasagna, and pan fried duck breast with an orange and Drambuie sauce. The wife liked her lasagna and I loved the duck--the best I ever tasted. Our second evening we had tagliatelle and, pan fried stuffed chicken. The dessert of note was the Eton Mess. This was the first time we ever had this dish and it was really outstanding. Note: kitchen serving hours 1800-2100, different for Sunday.
