We were incredibly pleased with how lovely the place is. Great outdoor dining area, and incredibly cosy inside. The staff were incredibly courteous, and the food was just unbelievably good. I'll admit, when I first ordered, I did think that they were a little expensive. However, it turns out that was because I was expecting the food to be of a lower standard. What they brought out to us was worth every penny. This is a fantastic little place, a hidden gem. Worth driving over an hour to go to, seriously.

As time went on we decided that we would like to stay and have dinner here but indoors as it was getting cold. There were 14 of us and they managed to fit us into the restaurant area on the proviso we ordered quickly before the 6:30pm booking arrived and one table had to vacate by 8pm. The staff were great and we did not feel that we were being rushed even though some people had starters. A lot of us picked from the specials board and the food came out devine and the service was outstanding. The place was busy as it was the jazz/fringe festival weekend so the clientelle was of all ages (a bit annoying having babies/kids screaming thoughout the meal) including elderly who came in through the fire door for easy access. I would definitely recommend this place which is also dog friendly. This place is soo good that Seasick Steve was playing there that evening and eating his dinner in the pub part as we left.

They don't sell packets of crisps, but they'll cook you some for £1.50, if they'd been friendlier and I'd have seen the little sign on the bar, behind the locals, I might have got some. We meant to return in the evening as the food looked good and at the best part of £20 a plate, it should be. Another reason not to return was, I'm not spending that money on a eight year old, to find she doesn't like it. Do a kids menu, Oh and if they do, let us the punters know.

Glad we did, we really enjoyed our stay. Room 5 was really large with three single beds. The room was well furnished and was very clean. The only complaint was their procedure of turning the heat off three times a day. If you want to sleep in past 8, be prepared for a cold room. The real surprise at The Bateman Arms was the restaurant. We were fortunate to have two dinners with them. Our first night, together we had crawfish/prawn salad, garlic mushrooms, veggie lasagna, and pan fried duck breast with an orange and Drambuie sauce. The wife liked her lasagna and I loved the duck--the best I ever tasted. Our second evening we had tagliatelle and, pan fried stuffed chicken. The dessert of note was the Eton Mess. This was the first time we ever had this dish and it was really outstanding. Note: kitchen serving hours 1800-2100, different for Sunday.

I opted for deep fried Brie, which was excellent, two generous portions, both well cooked with a tasty salad and cranberry sauce. My partner had the Lasagne, again, delicious, good portion, piping hot served with salad and garlic bread. The night we were there (a Thursday) it was bustiling with activity, as it was dominoes night! Nice atmosphere and the owners were very friendly, always nice to get a "thank you" and "goodbye" when you leave,a simple yet small token of appreciation that you will remember.

And this pub is a great little find. Although I think the dinner menu is more lunchy than dinner really (by that I mean I was craving steak and they didn't serve it). But we had a lovely light lamb stew. Perfect summer food. The ale was nice and the litle garden out the back was perfect for a sunny evening of chatting. Our dessert wasn't brilliant - my bakewell tart was yummy, but my friend's cheesecake was a little on the dry side (and baileys in a cheesecake doesn't seem to work either), but we spend the best part of five hours there sitting and chilling and chatting and reading books. It's a large pub right in the centre of town which actually is quite deceptive from the front as it looks quite small and traditional.. as you go in it opens up in to a huge eating area and has an extensive (and pleasant) beer garden out the back. I'm fairly sure this place is part of a chain but we weren't too bothered, we were just after a decent Sunday roast at this point ! SO to the menu.. On a Sunday you can have either chicken or beef (and Turkey at xmas) which is relatively limiting but once the food came we were definitely not disappointed. For £6.95 (that's right SIX NINETY FIVE) you got a huge serving of a very nice cut of beef cooked rare and still moist, mash, roast potatoes, peas, carrots, loads of cabbage, a homemade Yorkshire, lashings of gravy and a little tub of horse radish. It was brilliant ! Really cannot complain. In terms of other items on the menu, standard large chain pub grub. Big on burgers especially as everywhere seems to be nowadays ! Drinks are super cheap I bought 3 meals and 3 alcoholic drinks for about £27. Really can't go wrong. Good atmosphere, clean, friendly staff. Overall, very satisfying, we definitely got what we paid for :) very busy so be prepared to hunt for a table !
