This seemed to be a typical well-worn, working class neighborhood, so I was pleasantly surprised to stumble across this eatery/bar. The owners clearly spent a lot of time and money restoring the space, making it retro hip with beautiful tiles, old fixtures, lots of wood, glass and artsy lighting and stuff. You could plop this in Malibu and you wouldn't know the difference (except for Mel Gibson stealing your drinks). I stopped in to get out of the rain and to have a beverage, and somehow got into a conversation with others there. It turns out they were having a birthday party there and invited me to join them. When a group of pretty ladies is asking you to hang out, it's tough to say no. I tried some of the food, served farm-style, and it was excellent. Plus the staff were nice and quick to help. I'm now living in Central London but will be happy to venture back out to the Alice House for a meal or drinks... it's well worth a little journey (as in travel and not the group). A workmanlike menu, with a choice of perhaps a dozen mains ( including three roasts, it being Sunday). Roast leg of lamb, and specials of sole and wild boar sausages were all sampled and deemed to past muster - the lamb was tender and a very delicate pink, which is quite a feat in the circumstances. We didn't bother with starters, which was maybe a shame as there were some tasty sounding choices, including moules, and various plates of cured meats etc. The dessert I was pressed into sharing was a pretty stodgy cheescake, billed as "chocolate with toffee sauce" - again, more than serviceable, but slightly disappointing that the toffee sauce was not in evidence. A pretty decent wine list - a few glasses of Malbec were an aid to digestion/the gateway to a Sunday afternoon snooze. Fairly attentive service - we were gently reminded thaty the table was booked for another sitting after us, but only after we'd been there nearly two hours, and with a good fifteen minutes notice. I've not gone the whole five stars simply because I didn't really try enough of a representative sample of the menu, and I was mildly irritated by the constant buffeting from the buffoon at the table behind ( some tables are quite closely spaced).

We enjoyed an extremely fruity Rekorderlig cider, redolent with the flavours and aromas of strawberry and lime. The food menu is extensive. Those wishing to indulge in traditional English fare could opt for classic dishes such as Sausages & Mash, Ham, Egg & Chips, Steak & Ale Pie, Chicken Mushroom Pie, Fish & Chips...Also on offer are modern day favorites such as burgers, sandwiches, salads, lasagne, grilled chicken etc. On Sundays, the traditional Roast Beef or Roast Chicken is available for order. We arrived at 7.30pm for an evening meal, and first impressions were very positive. The decor is very nice - a bit stark and echoey for my taste, but that's a personal pression, nothing else. The staff were friendly and attentive - and the friendliness lasted throughout our visit. Sadly, the same cannot be said of the attentiveness. Orders were taken quickly and starters weren't too slow either. But that's were the attentiveness stopped. We waited at least 25 minutes between our starters being cleared and our mains appearing. And then it took half an hour for anyone to take our order for dessert - that's 30 minutes between being given the menu and being able to catch someone's eye to order. In total, our meal took 2hours and 15 minutes. Which is far longer than I'd ever expect of a three course meal, but which could have been forgiven if the food was exceptional. It wasn't. There was nothing desperately wrong with any of it, but none of it was truly exciting. Not once it turned up, at any rate. My starter - curried crab samosas - sounded really different, but fell flat, and was a disappointing start to the evening. The filling was a little boring, and not very crabby in flavour, and the pastry casings were a bit greasy. Which would become a theme. The raita that came with the samosas was the highlight - lovely and fresh and well seasoned. I'd have eaten more of that...but not of any of the rest. My main was a tart of English asparagus, leeks and Cornish Yarg if puff pastry, topped with salad. The tart itself was tasty enough - the leeks maybe a little creamy and a little too abundant, but the asparagus and cheese making up the difference. The major issue I had with this was that the plate was drizzled with oil, and the salad drenched in dressing. And when you put oil anywhere near puff pastry, it ends up tasting and looking oily. And excessive oil is not something I'm a fan off, so that rather ruined my main. We did wait for dessert, but regretted it. Sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream and rum toffee sauce. The sauce was nice, the ice cream ok, and the sticky toffee pudding itself was both stodgy and tasteless. A disappointing end to a disappointing evening. I think the main problem with our visit is that we went for a meal, and The Jam Tree is better suited to being a wine bar or pub. As long as you're willing to be served at the bar, it seems great. The wine list is extensive, and the garden out the back looks like a lovely place to spend a few hours. So whilst my visit was disappointing, and probably won't be repeated, I wouldn't entirely write the place off.

As you enter the pub you see the bar in the center of the room with wood panelling all over the place. It's a very typical old London pub vibe, very welcoming. What is less typical of my memory of London pubs is the quality of the food. They've sure come a long way since I as last back in old Blighty. Once down there you enter a small basement bar with a few chairs and tables looking towards a tiny makeshift stage. There's a certain charm about it, almost as if you have found your way into a secret club. Everyone sets out to have the best time possible and a close knit group of local artists organise music showcases. The usually small crowds here respect the music which is nice and this enhances most people's enjoyment of the evenings. In my experience the music at Oliver's isn't that brilliant but it is still worth checking out and the artists usually enjoy a bit of light banter with the crowd. The bar area is based in a tiny room next to the performance area and when busy, this area gets very congested. It is also where the toilet is. For some reason people insist on standing there and so if you need to relieve yourself then leave yourself plenty of time to get to the loo.
