1. We came on Mother's Day without a reservation and were seated promptly with no wait, which was a great start. We loved the atmosphere -- the warm lighting combined with the natural beach daylight coming through the windows created a peaceful ambiance. 2. As a table of three, we were comfortably able to share 2 appetizers, 3 main courses, and 2 desserts. The Fish Tacos, Wagyu Beef Burger (medium rare with added blue cheese), and Pistachio Tres Leches dessert stood out the most. The grilled octopus and tuna tartare were also excellent. The octopus was incredibly tender -- not chewy or overcooked at all. The tartare was fresh and well-balanced with avocado, although we did have to ask for an extra bowl of chips since it originally came with only five small chips. 3. Our waiter was also very nice, attentive, and did a great job throughout the meal. 4. One thing I really liked was the location. We were able to walk on the beach and then literally cross the street to get to the restaurant, which made the experience even better. A wonderful date spot with a view of the beach in nearly any spot you seat. Service was good considering how crazy busy it was especially for a Saturday with a private event going on. Food was very good, selection is very safe options, nothing too wild or experimental I've seen. I personally picked the sea bass fish tacos for $24 and it was very good! Consider this is Malibu and their rent must be astronomical. Also the pistachios tres leche dessert cake was perfect to end the meal and share with. With half dozen oysters to share, two cocktails, two taco dinners, plus one dessert to share you're looking at around $150+ after tax and nice deserving tip. So it's not spot if you're on "budget" but consider the location and the view. You're in Malibu! They also have valet but i came around 5pm when most people are leaving the beach anyways so street parking was "relatively" easy for me. Awful experience. The manager is a sexist, profiling, pontificating jerk. I came in at lunch waiting on a party of 7. They passed me off to 4 different people. The manager, who couldn't even be polite enough to give his name, came over, asked what I wanted, told me the wait would be "awhile." Figured that was fine because it's a large group on a weekend. When he did come back he informed me he refused to seat myself and my impending party because they have standards and he didn't care for the casual attire I was wearing and assumed the rest would be dressed the same. First off, not that it's your business, but my activewear is very expensive. Second, you are a restaurant on the beach where most of your guests are dressed to suit the climate. Third, if you have a dress code, it should state that. Fourth, not only did you lose my business by judging someone for something stupid but you lost a large bill, your server a large tip and now a lot of high profit clientele will hear all about how you treat people. Duke's opened back up and I will be taking my clients there where the food was always good, service always kind and people get treated with respect. I certainly will never go back here knowing this is the type of people they allow in management. Shame on you. read more

I don't know if I've ever been to a restaurant that charges $10 a slice to cut your cake. I genuinely couldn't believe it. They didn't even give the option to just let us cut it ourselves. $10 per person. To press the knife into the cake. I had a big group because it was my birthday so it was an extra $120 on top of the bill for the cake. $120 for them to cut the cake. Maybe I could've overlooked the fee a little bit if our waitress was around and very attentive, but she was MIA and we were all dying of thirst the whole time. Maybe I could've overlooked it l if our food came out fast but we were there for three and a half hours because the food was taking forever. I understand we're a big group but I've had a big group at other places even while it's busy and this has never happened. And then the cherry on top was an extra $120 to cut our cake and forced gratuity for bad service and for them to cut our cake. I can't make this up!! Really enjoy coming to the Sunset Restaurant and this last visit did not disappoint. Parking is available via valet parking. You can certainly try parking on the street, but it's beachfront and packed most of the time. There is indoor and outdoor seating options. Both provide beautiful views of the ocean, just keep in mind that the outdoor seating is directly in same. The service is excellent, with your waiter and managers checking on folks frequently without feeling overbearing. I have never been disappointed by any of the dishes I've ordered. This latest time, we enjoyed the calamari (crisp, warm, succulent), Cesar salad, burger, and seafood tacos (now a duo rather than trio...I wish they'd bring back the lobster). Oh how I love this place! Best spot to enjoy a drink and appetizer and catch a sunset! We sat on the couches in the lounge area and met a couple from Montreal who we chatted it up with for a bit... I had a Paloma and my husband had a Smokey tequila drink (can't remember the name) both so delicious! Also enjoyed the Tuna Tar Tar appetizer! Excellent! Service was great but off to a rough start as we sat for quite a while before anyone came over to us and the party that came in next to us, about 15 minutes after, were being tended to and of course I waved to the server and said we still haven't ordered? It was busy and the atmosphere was relaxed and casual but definitely a spot you can get dressy casual. The place smells of seafood so you anticipate the food. I ordered the clams linguini. It was a perfect balance of garlic, clams, and not heavy. I had a nice glass of their Albarino wine. I tried the oysters as the appetizer, they were delicious. My husband and I have always passed by this restaurant and finally we came here for lunch on a lovely, sunny Sunday! My hubs got the the waygu burger with double patties - and at the first bite, he said that this was so impressed and after the first few bites, he gave the burger a 10 out of 10! I got the salad and I think it was okay - maybe around an 8 out of 10 (wished there was more chicken!!) The ambiance was so great - we got a lovely seat next to the open windows! The service was pretty slow sadly given it was lunch time! Overall, a fantastic malibu spot right along the beach and would definitely come again! I really wanted to like this place because the location and views are absolutely beautiful. It's a great spot to sit and enjoy the scenery, and the restaurant itself looks promising. Unfortunately, the experience went downhill once the food and service came into play. The restaurant had just opened and there weren't many people there, yet our server still struggled to keep up with basic things like refilling our water. Service felt inattentive and slow despite the place being nearly empty. The food was also very disappointing. I ordered the spicy tuna, and the cucumbers in it tasted rancid, which completely ruined the dish. It honestly made it hard to eat after noticing that. The only bright spot was the lentil soup, which was actually amazing and full of flavor. Overall, it's a beautiful location with incredible views, but the food quality and service really need improvement. This time I had to try the seafood tower. It was the best seafood tower I've had. It was presented with all the sauces you could want to season all the different seafood. I'm a sauce person... so this was perfect for me! I would definitely get this again. I literally crave the grilled octopus on the appetizer menu. It was so good that we ordered two of them. Zuma really is a beautiful beach! Clean and peaceful perfect for a relaxing day! The sunset restaurant just makes your beach trip much better! It's $10 for valet parking which you will need. Very nice valet man! The layout is very unique... it's a literal beach house set up as a bar/ lounge and dining area! They offer happy hour right next to the ocean! Super chill and laid back but a bit boujee at the same time! Employees are very nice... Baja tacos are tiny but delicious! They also have crispy rice and cheese balls which are good! I brought my mom here for her birthday and we had such an amazing time! We had a table Overlooking the ocean and the ambiance was magical. The servers were absolutely attentive and the food was fresh and delicious. We started with the calamari and had some cocktails. I wish I remembered the names. We later had the clam linguine and the salmon entree. Both were incredible! My mom mentioned that the clams were better than her from her favorite restaurant in Barcelona. Came here after the beach and there was Christmas music playing. It seemed unconventional but it worked, lol. The Sunset Restaurant is right on the beautiful beach and they have their own parking which is very helpful considering how packed the beach could get. Such a cute looking restaurant and the service was really good. I got the fish tacos and they were huge! .. and i finished every last bit of it. It was THAT good. The overall vibes was so nice. The outdoor seating had sand all over the floor which i thought was a cute touch and the whole place was open to the outside. The windows didn't have glass or anything to block the view, the colors or the sounds of the ocean and the people enjoying it or passing by. i absolutely loved that. I may have moved but this spot, this way out in Malibu restaurant at the end of an ocean front drive will be a favorite until the end. I've had so many wonderful times here, great meals, fun experiences, lively bar encounters - sometimes mediocre service. The view in the open seating area is great. There is often a breeze. The upstairs is equally majestic and with height comes more shoreline. But it's a totally different vibe. Which is great! Because the outside too has a completely different aesthetic, feel, etc. I love outside too because they have those charming, French Riviera inspired umbrellas at the tables. It feels good. We had a bottle of wine and my husband got the sunset colada and it was the best cocktail I've had in a minute; it tasted like a key lime pie in a glass. So yum. We were here about 2 months ago maybe 3 at latest , and today was a totally disappointing experience . Reservation for 1:15 not needed , place was empty but we got our open table points so that part was good . For perspective we've been coming here religiously for 14 + years . Further context we arrived about 12:45 and left at 2:30. Most of the items on the menu we used to love are gone . Told it's seasonal now. They still have a brunch menu but only gave it to my husband so i never got to see it , i would have loved the lemon ricotta pancakes if they were still on the menu but since they didn't give us both the menu i had no idea they still had brunch . he put the menu aside and i thought maybe it was the wine menu because my husband doesn't drink so i never got to see that. You should give everyone at the table a menu, not one person especially when there's no one else in the restaurant ! Not like there was a shortage of menus! We Seated ourselves because as I said noone was there but us . One couple with a small child was finishing when we arrived . waited about 10 min for just water . Then we ordered , about 10 more minutes drinks showed up. What appeared to be the manager on staff stopped by to ask if we needed anything . my husband asked for a basket of bread . 15 min later no bread no shrimp cocktail appetizer ordered . Another couple came in 20-30 min after us ordered two sandwiches , their food came out within minutes and we still did not have our bread or shrimp cocktail . Another couple walks in now there's only us and this other couple entire restaurant !! This couple orders the tuna poke appetizer and our bread and appetizer show up at same time. The couple behind us also asked for their check and that was also immediate . They were gone about the same time our entre showed up . We're sitting there looking at each other like what are we the red-headed step child? They knew i'd was my husbands birthday! Bus plates are now stacking up and we've begun to stack them ourselves on the table it's just gross to leave dirty plates and no excuse when we're literally the only other couple here ! Then the server tells my husband i have something for you, ok , another 15 min goes by and he brings out what i assume is complimentary desert which was some really GROSS fruit cake with what tasted like an overly sweet rhubarb sauce . The ice cream was good , that new desert SUCKS! i took one bite didn't eat it my husband ate about half and left the rest . This used to be our go to for a beautiful afternoon, with so many great choices on their menu and they removed 50% of the seafood they had on the menu. The Hamachi Crudo was one of the best dishes ..gone .. seafood tower both sizes .. gone . Lobster tacos now are $42 . A lot changed in the last three months . I'm ok paying more for great food and great service , Their menu has barely changed in 14 years so i would have never thought to check their menu on line before going . What made it even more disappointing is they took so much away but raised the food prices about 25-50% (depending on dish) and then the service sucked with only three guests total in the whole restaurant! Another yelper posted 7 days ago that the lobster tacos were $36 . A week later $6 increase? We didn't bother talking to the manager as it took him 15 min to bring us bread , so my husband didn't want to bother . Unless they make some changes , we'll probably start looking for another chill on the beach place to eat. Yelp is already showing them reduced to 3.8 stars . This used to be a solid 5 star place and the food was always consistently great service consistently great . Something has changed here in a big way and not so much for the better . One more thing i'd like to address, your waiter kept calling my husband "boss" . That was just disrespectful. If that was a dig, he certainly wasn't bossy . I brought this up because while reading some of the recent views I've noticed all are the same terrible service rude wait staff and management without any apologies even when there's a total of 3 couples on weekday. We sat at the bar/lounge (a first come first served area) and the host walked us to our seat and provided us menus, but a server did not come to check in on us/take our order until 10-15 minutes later (not exaggerating). What a beautiful place to have lunch and dinner. We celebrated my daughter's birthday here few days ago and had a great time. Customer service was amazing. There were ten of us and everything went so smooth. Usually for large parties the service is not that good. Location is right by the beach. There is valet parking and some street parking. You can take a nice walk by the beach before or after eating here. The appetizers we got were delicious. Guac and chips was perfect. The calamari also was a hit by everyone. We got a pitcher of sangria which tasted good. The main dishes were ok. Probably the best dish was the seafood linguini. The chicken sandwich bread was delicious but there was barely any chicken in it. The flavors were good but I wish the chicken piece was a bit bigger. Same for the fish sandwich. Huge brioche bread and barely tastes the fish. ( this sandwich will taste better in the other bread that was used for the chicken sandwich) ... sweet potato fries was awesome. Overall a great place to eat. The sunset from the outdoor patio was breathtaking. I'll come here again just for that ... so beautiful. And let's not forget the valet guy .... A rude mean black man claiming that "his" restaurant cannot accommodate 6 people sitting by the window greeted us (see in the past we have been accommodated). He ruined the whole brunch experience for my guests visiting from Canada. He is not only rude but treats people with disrespect and a demeaning attitude . He shows how ignorant he is and is a mistake to have him greeting people. He was so distasteful pretending this is a high end place. The place is cool but the food is nothing special and the place is run down . We regretted our decision to come here but we had to stay because we were just passing by the area. I so wanted to make this a five star review, and I usually leave very positive reviews for restaurants, but I was visibly upset during my visit. There were so many incredible aspects, but one very distracting one. To begin, the valet was amazing. At the end, we wanted to walk across the street to take a look at it really cool Sandcastle and they told us to take our time and they had our car waiting for us ready to go. Very friendly, very great. The hosts were wonderful. We originally had a seat that had absolutely no view and we requested to wait for one and they moved as fast as possible and accommodated us with a smile. They were on their game 110%. Once we got to our seat, truthfully, this is where things started to fall apart. No one came to see us for over 10 minutes. The place was pretty busy, so I was pretty understanding, but this was just the beginning. Our server finally came to us, and I won't name names, But she kept checking on the table next to us and we were not a priority. I saw her twice within an hour span. Additionally, it took over 40 minutes for our food to arrive, and parts of my food was cold. Once we finished and our plates were picked up by a great bus boy, we waited another 15 minutes until our server finally arrived and brought us the check, which we didn't ask for. We wanted to order dessert... And it just felt really insensitive like she was done and trying to rush us out. After dessert, I just handed her my card without waiting for the bill because I didn't feel like waiting another 30 minutes for the check. Ambience was great and minus the complete lack of service, it was overall a nice spot. If the service improves, I'd be back, but otherwise, I won't. read more

Amazing!! Gabriela was our server and she was very sweet and attentive. I tried the chicken sandwich this time and that was deliciousss. The bread was so crispy and the sauce in the sandwich with the lettuce tomato, ahh heart eyes. The chicken itself was seasoned and cooked perfectly. The sandwich comes with a side salad but I asked if we could sub it for fries and they happily did so. We also got the allegria salad and that was sooo flavorful! I got their espresso martini and loved it. For dessert we got the affogato and even though it's so simple, it was so good! I would give zero stars if I could! My husband is celebrating his 60th birthday and we were treated very poorly. The waitress basically ignored us and she left our food in the back so long it was cold. We are 4 well educated and prosperous people, and we were treated less than. I'm posting this review from my table. I put on the reservation it was for my husband's birthday and when we arrived. However it was never acknowledged. They acted as if black people are an annoyance. I will NEVER come back. If you are African American this is NOT the restaurant for you! read more
