I'm a vegan, so my expectations for finding something tasty at a UK Pub didn't seem very high. Even in the US, I find pub menus about the most vegan-unfriendly. I didn't see anything on the menu to eat, so I e-mailed them in advance to see if there were some options available. Not only did they get back to me right away, but they offered me several off-menu options for starters, dinner, and even dessert: Starters: Soup of the day (we can do a veg soup if you book) Orange & Walnut Salad with Watercress & Balsamic Dressing Sun-Blushed Tomato, Olive & Artichoke Salad Dinner: Mushroom Stuffed Vine Tomatoes with Tempura Veg & Salsa Verde Dressing Cous Cous Stuffed Peppers with Mixed Salad & New Potatoes Marinated Tofu & Noodle Stir fry with Bean Sprouts Dessert: Red Wine Poached Pear With Sorbet Fruit Salad with Fruit Coulis Glazed Pineapple with Mango & Chlli Are you kidding me? I don't get great options like this even when eating at restaurants with vegan options. I got the orange/walnut salad, cous cous stuffed peppers and glazed pineapple and everything was fantastic! Some of the best food I've ever eaten. This place can really cook. (By the way, my non-vegan colleagues loved their food as well) If you are vegan and want to go here, please e-mail them in advance, so they can provide some options and plan for your visit. Not only was the food great, but the place has a nice cozy atmosphere and the owner and staff are great. Not only was the service great, but the owner actually drove us all back to our hotel in Swindon, which isn't that close. I can't say enough about this place, because it was such a surprise. I wish they would come to Minneapolis and set up a restaurant here, because it would beat every pub in town. The next time I go to Swindon, I will be back.

I discovered Three Crowns while working as a consultant in nearby Swindon one summer. This cozy pub was the "go-to" spot whenever the team needed a break from our normal routine (hotel food or late night kebab trucks). Particularly memorable was the "Taste of the Wild"-- kangaroo, ostrich, and venison. The meat wasn't too gamy, and cream sauce was amazing! The homemade desserts are also fantastic. They even have a proper English cheese tray that they roll right up to your table. The Stilton I tried was far and away the best I've ever eaten. And cheese for dessert! Boy, the British sure know how to live! It's a lovely drive into the countryside (including some sketchy single-lane roads!) and well worth it once in a while to splurge on a great meal!

They even have a raised bed garden behind the inn. The inn is in a stunningly beautiful building in the stunningly beautiful village of Upper Oddington, east of Stowe on the Wold. We had a 7:00 pm reservation and were seated immediately in the period dining room. The patrons consisted of local residents at the bar, inn guests and other travelers. The dining room was very clean. The wait staff was very attentive, sharpely dressed and very polite. Norman, the owner, explained the difference between cask and keg beers and allowed me sample several ales and ciders. I selected the cask drawn amber ale from North Cotswold Brewery. It had excellent flavour and a clean finish. Norman also checked on our meal several times. He was very engaging and fun to talk with. Next we ordered dinner. My wife had the ribeye steak with peppercorn sauce, chips, sautéed mushroom and onion rings. The steak was prepared exactly as ordered. The peppercorn sauce was so good she used it on her chips also. The mushroom had excellent flavour and complimented the steak and peppercorn sauce. She had a 1/2 pint of Thatchers Golden Cider, which was also very good. I ordered the special, crispy pork belly with a sweet patato purée, fondant potatoes and roasted new carrots. Everything was excellent and complimented each other. We finished the evening with coffee and the sticky toffee pudding. It was moist, flavourful, drizzled with a caramel sauce and accompanied by a dollop of excellent vanilla ice cream. We didn't need it but finished the whole thing. My wife said it's the best dessert she has ever had. We had an excellent meal and a wonderful time in a lovely setting. People from Stowe, Bourton on the Water, Chipping Camden and even Cheltenham need to get out there. I would go every week if I didn't live 3,000 miles away.

Gourmet desserts. Salmon encruste was excellent as was the whole Sole. Tried a standard pub dish, beef and mushroom pie and it was heavenly homemade with a delicate crust. Plus the owner is an oenophile, so there's a very nice wine list including an extensive list of wines by the glass. Friendly staff. What an unexpected treat and a great blend of traditional and new. Well done!!!

Beer was great. Everything we ordered we loved. 5 stars for service - very friendly, came around constantly to check on us. Bonus - sat right next to the fireplace on a cold English winter night. Next time we will spend more time here. This is on the short list of getaway spots going forward.

The place is certainly atmospheric and has good food and beer. The staff were very approachable but we feel a fundamental design flaw allows the noise from the bar or other bedrooms to be really unacceptable and it made for an unpleasant stay. To start with the bedroom we were in. A good comfortable four poster bed with great linen, efficient free wi-fi and the obligatory flat screen TV as well as some fresh biscuits and tea making facilities got us off to a good start. The bath was a free standing one that needed a bloody good clean, as it was marked from the shower hose, had dirt and fluff around the waste pipe outside of the bath and the shower attachment squirted water when the taps were running. The condition of the painted walls in the bathroom and bedroom was very scruffy. The large bathroom would also have easily taken a separate free standing shower and we felt corners had been cut with the design and fit out. The carpet on the landing and the stairs was very grubby and badly marked, not helped by having to enter via the outside courtyard, and we felt this was a very poor design feature as had the floors been wooden or tiled they could have at least been cleaned daily. These are all minor individual points but they add up to show a poor level of house keeping. Onto the noise.....the bar below our bedroom was luckily fairly quiet on a Sunday night in November so the level of bar noise could be lived with, but not when the bar is full. The big negative was that in our bedroom you could hear EVERY word of the folks in the next door bathroom, and when the toilet flushed we thought that the cistern was in our bedroom right behind our head board. The bath was filled later that night and we again believed we could touch the water by the noise it created! When ever the next door room was up in the night, or in the morning, our sleep was badly disturbed. They were not being particularly loud and blissfully unaware of the disturbance they were creating. The bad design issue we feel makes the bedroom unacceptable as the basic ingredient of a country B & B/Inn/hotel is a quiet bedroom, as the majority of time spent there should involve SLEEP and not disturbing your fellow residents! The breakfast was fine, but I never got the offered black pudding on the menu and my partners tasty smoked fish omlette was swimming in too much cream....for breakfast does one need cream except in maybe coffee or on porridge? The staff member serving breakfast did a sterling job, but she had to keep moving around, and we had to stare at, the cleaning mop and bucket sitting right next to the bar.. We again feel this is not how a professional hospitality establishment should operate. In conclusion our stay left us disappointed and tired hence our 2/5...we would certainly eat & drink here again but not stay. However if you do decide to stay take ear plugs, drink a fair amount and be an early riser!

When we got back we ordered lunch and found a spot out in the garden to wait for out food. The pub itself is the perfect picture of a country pub and it has a beautiful garden with a nice stream running through it. It's a great place to sit and drink a pint. The menu is your typical British pub fare. Fairly cheap and standard. Our food arrived reasonably quickly and was what I expected for the price. The chips were obviously manufactured and frozen and then sausage sandwich was passable but not impressive. Fortunately I didn't pay much for all of it. The one highlight for me of this pub was their excellent selection of Samuel Smith's ales on draft and in bottles. I have always loved Samuel Smith's and this was the first place in the area that I'd found it available. All in all I was less than impressed. It is such a shame to waste such beautiful pub in a nice spot on such mediocre food and service. Perhaps if I'm out on a bike ride through Withington I'll stop by for a pint of Sam Smiths, but I don't think I'll be going back for a meal.
