Magical is the only word to describe this place. Open later, it's the perfect winery to end the day. Sunset and a wine paring- it's a must. There is passion behind their wines and it comes through. Grab a bottle of the St Vincent!

It is significant that we broke our rule about "no more wine clubs" to join Storm Cellar's wine club. We love the West Elks AVA (American Viticultural Area). The cool-climate grapes remind us of Finger Lakes wineries, with mineral-driven whites and fruit-driven reds--and wonderful rosé . The owners, Steve and Jayme, were sommeliers and wine directors at exceptional Denver restaurants before buying their own piece of heaven and planting vineyards five years ago. They know wine. I took a course on wine attributes from them several years ago and it was so informative and inspirational. Like many West Elks vineyards, Storm Cellar lost many grapes and vines to a devastating early frost two years ago. They kept their winery going by selecting west coast grapes and makes superb wines from them. That's what creative, resourceful vintners do! The vines are coming back now, so we hope that we will have more great West Elks wines in the near future. They are producing wonderful wines from hybrids, e.g., St. Vincent and Chambourcin. (These are not your Aunt Ruby's hybrids--they are spectacular and comparable to any varietals of the AVA). Jayme and Steve are great resources to wine lovers and very helpful. Steve helped us plan a trip to Sonoma last fall by sharing his recommendations and insights. We appreciated this assistance so much. Jayme and Steve are great at guiding tasters through their wine selections. Yesterday, we tasted several rosé that ranged from pale to nearly ruby. After the tasting, we went out to their gazebo and chilled with glasses of Rosé of Chambourcin and are two dogs. Heavenly!

This place is such a magical place and has such a laidback vibe with upscale service food and wine. You will have to go up some windy roads to get there but the road is in great condition and the directions are well marked. Plus the view is well worth it when you get there. I went on a Friday night when they had a visiting chef serving ribeye and fish kebabs. They had picnic benches, string lights, and corrugated steel shelters which created the perfect ambiance to enjoy the incredible view. The wine is phenomenal. The couple that started it were sommeliers in the denver dining scene so they definitely know what they're doing when it comes to service and wine. My favorite is the Sauvignon blanc but you honestly cannot go wrong with any of their wines. I love that this is a working farm and they were very welcoming. A lot of the locals were visiting so you know this was the place to be on a Friday night in hotchkiss/Paonia. This place is a must visit if you're ever in the area and even a reason to come to this area!

The wines I picked were on cards which had descriptions of each one on the back. Each wine I tried was great - the gal in the smaller building out front and near the sitting area was very knowledgeable and friendly. There is ample seating and even reserved tables available if you're with a larger group. For a Saturday, it wasn't terribly busy and finding a spot to sit wasn't difficult. At the end, you tell the gal which wine was your favorite and they give you a wine glass charm that matches the one you picked, so cute and thoughtful! I also bought a bottle of my favorite and they offered to chill it before I left. Both the tasting and bottle were reasonably priced. There's also a trolley that stops by and takes people to different wineries - a perfect way to wine hop and not worry about transportation. Definitely recommend if you find yourself in Palisade.

Since our trip was a celebratory one, our anniversary, Gary brought out a bottle of the sparkling rosé. We ordered a tasting from Marissa, who was helpful giving us recommendations. There are shade sails outside and we were sitting under one, enjoying the snack we had brought along. My brother-in-law was asking questions about the restored cars and that was a fascinating conversation. The vineyard was not only restored to its current state but the owner also restores classic Mercedes cars. The views are spectacular and you can see a great distance. A short rain storm swooped in and sent us running for shelter, but it soon passed and the sun reappeared. Overall great visit. I would recommend going to this winery.

The occasion: viewing the incredible "Keith Haring: Grace House Mural" exhibition at MCA Denver back in 2021. Towards the end of my visit, I went upstairs to the rooftop and purchased a bottle of Big B's organic lemonade. Organic ingredients include lemon juice, cane sugar, whole lemons and apple juice, along with filtered water and natural flavor. What I loved about this lemonade is the citrus essence was great, it was not cloyingly sweet (more moderately sweet), and the apple juice gave it a welcome, totally different taste not found in most lemonades. Drinking this delicious lemonade was a great way to cap off an enjoyable visit to the museum. On a different note, I didn't realize Hotchkiss, Colorado is actually closer to Utah than Denver. It's about 236 miles away from Denver. But if I'm ever taking a road trip, I would like to visit Big B's Delicious Orchards.
