This is a really cool spot... The lady that was the only one on site. The day we were. There is a rock 'n' roll drummer playing in local venues. And she is a really great intro to this line growing area. Very knowledgeable about not only the Vineyards and the Wines, but of local places to go and eat. We set out under a nice shade tree. Extremely hot one. We were there but she was very accommodating. Probably one of the top three wineries for tasting in the area. You do have to pay for the tastings but it's well worth it. We were here a few years back but I remember it being one of my favorite vineyards due it its small size and charm. The location is spectacular for one, high up on a mesa with incredible views. There are beautiful roses planted near the rows of vines. The wine for tasting was set out on a checkered table cloth outside. Everything we tasted was delicious! and the host was very friendly. We came here for an early afternoon tasting on a weekday and were the only people there when we arrived. My friend had done a tasting here recently so he opted for a glass and I opted for a tasting. They do smaller production and sold out of most of their whites. I ended up trying 1 white and 3 reds. After my first pour, another party came in and the tasting room associate seemed very oblivious to when I needed new pours, even when I was standing in front of her with an empty glass. She was engrained in a conversation with the other party. Overall, it took close to an hour to go through a four pour tasting. I would've gotten a glass too if the service had been quicker, but we had an appointment at another vineyard. The service was very friendly, just slow and not the most knowledgeable about wine which is fine. The wines were pretty good. My favorite was the Pinot Noir, which I am not usually a huge fan of. The atmosphere is great though with a cool seating area beneath a willow tree and of course the beautiful stone buildings. read more

What a gem! We visited Stone both for a standard tasting, in the morning, and came back for their 1st food and wine pairing event, in the evening. What a treat that was! Karen and Brent were so welcoming and knowledgeable. There wines were consistently the best of any that we tried, in our week long road trip to the "West Elks EVA" wine region. Their Gewurztraminer was a real stand out to me. The food pairings were all well matched, with delicious local goat cheese, bread and sausage from Paonia. I highly recommend a visit! read more

This winery is actually in a super cute stone cottage (surprise surprise!). We went upon a recommendation from a rep at Azura and were happy we gave it a try :) First of all, I have to admit that I'm not the biggest fan of CO wines. However, this winery has varieties on the drier side (in line with French wines), which I prefer. If you don't like dry, then you might not be a fan. As far as the setting goes, the cottage is very small. When we arrived there was another couple doing a tasting. I don't think there'd be room for too many more. The reps were very personable and we enjoyed learning about their wines. One of them even gave us a tour of their "hobbit hole" (their cellar that's built into a hill). I recommend checking that out if you're able! If you're wine tasting in Paonia, this is a great spot to add to your list! read more

Stayed at a nearby AirBNB and came here for an impromptu wine tasting. We had a great time! The variety of wines was wonderful and we picked up a couple of bottles to take home. The staff was very knowledgeable about wine and they were all super friendly. They even gave a short tour to teach us some more about their wine-making process. I kind of felt like I was walking into a fairytale when we turned into Stone Cottage Cellars. The wine tasting room is a literal stone cottage and it's fairly small, but full of friendly people. They let us try 4 different wines and my favorite by far was the Gewürztraminer, but that could be just because I'm partial to this type of wine and not many wineries make it. The other wines we tried were a Chardonnay, a Syrah, and a Merlot and I did enjoy those as well. I highly recommend the tour, drinking the wine, and taking some home. He is so friendly and makes you feel truly appreciated for stopping in not knowing if you're tasting for free and leaving or purchasing! Almost no one doesn't charge for tasting anymore but stone cottage does not. Bought a glass each after tasting and a few bottles before leaving. Love supporting CO wineries! We love stone cottage so much! It is always our first stop when we roll into town and it's the best winery in Paonia! The owners are so friendly and always greet you with a smile on there face. They take time to make you feel welcome and their complimentary tastings are so wonderful. They are eager to explain how each wine is made and always give really great local recommendations. Every wine we've tasted there is unique and delicious and we always end up buying a bottle. You are able to walk through the vineyard and take your time enjoying the property. The location and scenery are absolutely beautiful and they encourage you to take pictures. The owner, Karen has done our tastings every time we've gone and she is such a friendly person. Their family seems so down to earth and supportive of other businesses in Paonia. She even gave us a little gift the last time we visited because it was our anniversary. A couple of hundred yards up the access road, you might find yourself reconsidering your decision. But stay the course on the gravel/dirt/shelf-type road because the overall experience is well worth it. When you reach the top and turn into the property, you will be amazed at the views of the mountains and lush landscape set behind the rows of grapevines It's as picturesque a setting you can imagine. It's what a Colorado vineyard should look like. Gibbs the family vineyard dog will greet you at your car and direct you to the back door entrance to the tasting room (seriously). There you will meet your hosts Karen and Brent. Brent is the winemaker and Karen manages the tasting room. She is extremely knowledgeable and is willing to explain as much detail as you want about their wines and the winemaking process. Their wines are excellent. Clean, crisp, fruity, aromatic and balanced are all terms that come to mind in describing the wine. Their dry Gewurtztraminer is as good as any I've had and I'll admit to being somewhat of a wine snob. Their Pinot Gris and Merlot were also outstanding. Unfortunately they were sold out of their Chardonnay we had heard good things about. We also got to see their 'cave' barrel room which was very educational. Our kids really loved that. And speaking of kids, they are welcome even though we found some things on the web indicating that they were not. Great setting, hosts and vino. read more

The Traveling Winers on Colorado Wine Trail Have you been to Ireland or England? If not, it might be a bit cheaper to simply come visit this winery. We believe that you will get a very similar experience. The cottages are all made from the stones pulled out of the vineyard and the logs in the cottages are from the trees on the property. Such a European charm! Brent and Karen bought the place in 1994 and currently produce about 1,200 cases per year, all estate grown with the exception of the Syrah which is purchased from local Palisades, CO. The wine, although a small collection, for our pallet's, was simply amazing! All "A's" with only one "B" in the group! As far as wine making, Brent says his secret is "Good grapes + clean work area + staying 'outta the way' = GREAT WINE!" We think that Brent has the right recipe! We were so excited to get there and SO disappointed when we did. We are residents of Paonia and enjoy supporting our local businesses and products however when we arrived there was little signage of where to go or where the testing room was. We could hear people talking in what we presumed was the tasting room but the door was locked, there were 2 people sitting outside and they never talked to us. Do yourself a favor and go to one of the other wonderful wineries in the area that are very wonderful and very personable. So disappointing. My husband and I visited August 12, 2015. Karen was cutting roses in the garden, but stopped immediately and offered to give us the tour of the cellar. We had a wonderful wine tasting experience, with five wines available. Our favorites were the crispy Pinot Gris, the smooth Syrah and the delightfully rich Alpine dessert wine. We bought several bottles of each to enjoy and share with friends at home in Highlands Ranch, CO. Karen also shared with us the history of the wine country of Paonia, gave us a map of the other vineyards, and referred us to a wonderful café in Paonia for lunch. We waited, went outside to see if anyone was around, and spotted a man coming out of the grape vines. He sat down talking on his cell phone and never even looked at us.
