R&J Restaurant - Very greasy rings

Honestly disappointed. Went here because it seemed popular…read moreand nice and busy. Assuming that meant it was good. Bought 60 dollars of food for half of it to end up in the garbage. Never coming again. The squid rings were extremely salty and way too greasy. I know deep fried squid rings ought to be greasy but this was extreme. Ended up with a family member getting sick and throwing up from the heart burn afterwards. The batter hardly stayed on them. Not to mention them dumping the hot rings straight into the Styrofoam tray which melted onto a couple of the rings. Absolutely dangerous. The poutine had watery gravy with very little flavour, they used store bought fries which some were a bit hard in the middle, maybe udercooked? Not sure what caused them to be like that. They also had no flavour. At least they tried to make up for it with about half a blocks worth of cheese on it. The only decent item was the loaded wedges, which weren't initially given to us. We got takeout and had to turn around and go back for the rest of the meal which they forgot to hand to us. And then treated as if it were somehow our fault by the moody staff.

When looking for a locally-made breakfast, the Bread Box popped up on my radar (re. Google)…read more Conveniently located near the 330, I figured it would be our best option before heading up to Twillingate for the day. The breakfast and lunch options are prominently displayed on the menu by the counter, but the top item drew both my attention and hunger - the touton breakfast sandwich. Coming with the standard egg, bacon and cheese in a split touton. There's a "mega" version that comes with another touton stacked into/onto the regular version, with an added sausage patty, but I stuck to the base version. We grabbed our coffees (serve yourself from carafes) and sat down to wait for my food. My wife snagged a piece of carrot cake and it was top notch - wonderfully light, fluffy and moist and the delicious cream cheese icing, was, uh, the icing on the cake. Sorry, I had to! It wasn't long before my food was before me. The touton got the sandwich press treatment, with the griddle's indentations readily apparent in the touton. The exterior was lightly crisp from this, and the dough was pleasantly chewy. The bacon was good and crisp , and the fried egg and cheese slice combined for some breakfasty goodness. The home fries were not as expected, as they seemed to be from-frozen french fries that came with an herbal seasoning. But hey, it worked, and they were good enough for my wife to steal a bunch of them! To our deep regret, we won't yet be home for a few days, so getting some of the very tempting breads or sweets did not seem prudent, but I hope that GBB knows that we really, REALLY wanted to. The Bread Box's inglorious strip mall location belies what an asset they are to the town, but judging from the mid-morning crowd there, Gander already knows.

We enjoyed the turkey one, but the egg salad was different than what we're used to. It was very sweet. We also got an order of toutons and got some chocolate brownies and coconut biscuits to go. The selection of baked goods, even in the afternoon, was great! So many things to try, and all delicious!

Shockingly excellent, with one caveat…read more Was staying at the Quality Hotel attached to this restaurant for one night with my family, so we came here for dinner and breakfast (in which we had a free coupon as part of the stay). For dinner, we each had the french onion soup, and then I had the pan fried cod with pork scrunchions. My mom had the pesto chicken linguini, while my dad had the 8oz striploin, medium. The french onion soup was excellent, caught me off guard for a place like this where you wouldn't think they specialize in it...but it was really good. The pan fried cod with pork scrunchions was just as good (I probably could've done without the scrunchions though, but it's fine). My mom said her pesto chicken linguini was to her satisfaction. The striploin...was the most overcooked thing my dad has ever eaten. So he requested to swap to the chicken linguini, which the kitchen did end up doing. Breakfast was good here (especially considered it was included with the stay). No complaints with the food we were served there. Service was a bit unattentive in the sense that the servers refused to refill our water...and when I asked to refill the water, the server only refilled my water and not my parents (whose glasses were also as empty). I will say that despite the shortcomings with service, the food here is really good for a hotel restaurant, and I'd still recommend it to those in the area.
