When I was shopping in the Gander Mall recently, I saw that Country Kitchen was located near the…read moreentrance. I had seen some favorable reviews on this restaurant, so when I finished my shopping, I went in for a quick lunch. I'm really glad that I did. I ordered a simple lunch of the Newfoundland split pea soup and a bologna sandwich. I really like split pea soup and their version was one of the best that I've had. It was chocked full of seasoning pork, carrots and as a bonus, a big dumpling was located in the middle of the bowl. The bologna sandwich took me back to my childhood days, as not many places these days offer bologna as an option. The bologna itself had a very good flavor and the sandwich was fixed very much like a BLT, with lettuce, tomato and mayo. Based on my experience here, one should at least give this place a try and if I happen to be back in the gander area again, I certainly will be back.

It was definitely not the typical cafe salad. Especially not with the balsamic reduction dressing. It was nice and will help to offset all of the calories I took in yesterday. Although I chased it down with a blueberry scone which was also quite nice. My wife, meanwhile, ordered the lemon cheesecake. It was very good. I had a few bites of it so that she wouldn't have to worry about the calories. There is parking for two cars out front and I'm sure there's a lot of street parking available too. The WiFi is free, strong and password protected. This is a very casual dining experience but one that I can recommend if you passing through. The cafe was quite busy with locals coming in for take-out.

It certainly wasn't quiet but we had no difficulty having a conversation. As we finished off there were even more people waiting to get in. There are big screen TV's that featured a football game. I ordered the Cod Tacos with a side salad for $15.99. They were quite filling even though they're probably one of the lowest cost items on the menu. There is lots of parking and it's easy to find as its right on the TransCanada Highway. If you don't mind waiting for a table you'll probably enjoy a meal here. It's pretty much a chicken place (with a few exceptions such as my cod tacos) and if your okay with that then you'll find something to satisfy your hunger at Jungle Jim's.

The Chef's Board of seafood was quite good, though the "roasted vegetable of the day" was barely warm. Partridgeberry chicken was fair, with the same veggie issues as the seafood dish. The restaurant does talk about a wine list. The by-the-glass selections are all traditional offerings, as are the by-the-bottle wines. I believe there were seven reds and six whites on each side of the wine list. Prices top out at 50/bottle so. Service was pretty good, and the restaurant itself is comfortably quirky.

When you walk in there is a door chime that sounds for the staff in the back to know when customers come in. I waited 5 mins and still no one came to the counter. I could see a guy in the back so I know SOMEONE was working there. He did not even look towards the counter during 5 minutes. So I rang the bell on the counter. No response from him at all. I waited another 5 minutes then called out to him a hello. No acknowledgement. So I rang the bell again. Still no response. I don't have time for staff that ignore paying customers, so I turned to leave. Finally after 15 minutes, he WANDERED toward the counter, I told him not to bother and left. Very disappointing experience here!
