River City Veterinary Hospital - Our happy golden retriever Luke playing with his friends

River City Veterinary Hospital

Our sweet boy Luke our beloved golden retriever recently passed away after twelve years of a very…read morefull life. He grew up going to River City for his health care and was a regular at doggie day care. This was his favorite place on earth. The care and love received from these people was extraordinary. He was so comfortable with this place and its wonderful people that when he had to see Dr. Harsh for medical care, he was unafraid and loved him too with big lick to the face. The attached picture was hung in the lobby of River City of our sweet boy and you can see how happy he was playing with his friends. There is no better better place in town to take your animal for care or day care! When I think of the great memories we had with our dog, this place is part of those very fond memories. Thank you Dr. Harsh and River City Veterinary Hospital and Day Care for being so loving and taking such good care of our very good boy Luke.

I expect a vet to be there when we desperately need help. Instead, River City Vet turned us away…read more During Blue's yearly checkup I mentioned that there had been some respiratory/sneezing issues for several months but this was of no concern to them. We were told he was healthy. He wasn't. I brought Blue in for a weight check 3-4 weeks after his checkup. He had lost nearly a pound in that time. He wouldn't eat. His behavior had changed. No one followed up on my concerns. I called River City Vet a few days after the weight check because Blue was lethargic and wouldn't eat or drink. We were told they didn't have time for us. I took Blue in to West Vet for IV fluids every day for 3 days. My husband was out of the country and made an emergency flight home from Japan while we struggled to keep Blue alive so he could say goodbye to his favorite human. Blue died in our arms on Easter Sunday, a few hours after my husband got home. He was only 6 years old.

House of Hounds - Sunnie on a walk about!

We enrolled our miniature schnauzer puppy, Bentley, in House of Hounds' four-week day-training…read moreprogram, and we couldn't be happier with our experience! Alistar worked with Bentley three days a week, teaching obedience skills, leash manners, and helping him develop confidence around other dogs and in different environments by taking him on "field trips" to a store and to the Greenbelt. Bentley walks well on a leash (most times, it's still a work in progress!) and we've watched him grow into something of an unofficial ambassador at House of Hounds for new pups coming to play! One of the highlights of the program was receiving photos of him playing with dogs of every size and personality, including Robin the Basset Hound, Keith the Pug, Gizzard the Chihuahua, and Cheeseburger the Pit Bull. Bentley is just as comfortable playing with puppies his own size as he is with much larger dogs. But perhaps the most valuable part of the program was Alistar's commitment to training US, not just Bentley. Bentley is an eager learner. It's us who needed to look at dog training through a different set of eyes! Alistar patiently helped us understand Bentley's behavior, showed us how to communicate more effectively, and gave us practical ways to reinforce his training. He even visited our house to observe Bentley and us and help us address some of the challenges we were experiencing. That kind of personal attention meant a great deal to us. Bentley still has all the enthusiasm and personality you'd expect from a miniature schnauzer puppy, but thanks to Alistar, we're better equipped to guide him as he grows into the gentleman we know he'll be. We've been bringing our dogs to House of Hounds since they first opened near the airport, and we've watched Mikey and her team build something special over the years. Our latest experience with Bentley's training program has only reinforced why we keep coming back. We're grateful to Alistar and the entire House of Hounds team for their care, patience, and dedication. We wholeheartedly recommend their training program. And judging by how excited Bentley is whenever he arrives at House of Hounds, we know he'd give them five stars, too!

Drake was referred to me by another dog walker who couldn't handle Tia. I first called Drake to do a training session and told him all the things I was worried about - distracted around other dogs, lunging towards other dogs, etc. The first training place he picked was Lake Merritt on a weekend where there are TONS of dogs. Before this, I always walked across the street when I saw other dogs. By the end of a little over an hour, Tia was lying down just casually, letting other dogs pass by. I tried many group sessions with other trainers prior to this but still never felt confident enough to practice with Tia in such a busy setting. A lot of other trainers would give tips that sometimes seemed more appropriate for a small/medium dog (Tia is 60 lbs, I'm 110lbs - "no pull" harnesses and martingale collars were not cutting it). Drake was so much more relatable because he has so much experience with big dogs and small. I seriously give this guy so much credit for giving me the tools and confidence to work with Tia. Training now is actually fun and not daunting! I can now take Tia to trips on hikes, walks around the lake, breweries, etc. multiple times a week! Tia now also gets to hang out with Drake on a weekly basis and even has her own "pack." Since I've been able to better train with her and her walks with Drake, there's been a HUGE change in her behavior for the better! Can't believe I used to think she would not be able to be around other dogs!
