The service was very accommodating given the strange rituals we were performing (checking the colour of the obligatory Tikka Masala using a pantone reference chart, testing the poppadums by dropping a pound coin through them etc). The presence of the club secretary taking minutes throughout and the number of photos we took were all taken in their stride. Reasonably priced good ambience and easily earning 4 out of 5 stars. (I'll hopefully be back tonight, with the family, in attempt to wean them off the Kirthon.)

An especially wet Saturday night called for a curry in town and gave an ideal opportunity to test out The Raj Pavilion. TW's worst Qyper legrandflaneur was due to be in attendance but cried off because he 'didn't feel awake enough' and so we soldiered on accordingly and were well rewarded for our staying (out) power. The Raj occupies that happy place between the Gastro-type Indian joints with their poncey nouveau cuisine menus and the 1970s stragglers with their flock wallpaper and prawn cocktail starters. I liked it. They had a blessedly short menu and whilst we hoovered up a fair run of grub, all of it was fresh, oil free and fierily tasty. I had king prawn rogan josh which was solid and a mate eat a herby Goan chilli chicken than was fantastic. The garlic naan will be with me for days and the side dishes were tasty too. What was impressive was that the head waiter came over to discuss each dish with us later. I'm glad I'd paid attention!!! He really cared & was keen to talk about their origins and preparation too. Nice one. I notice they do a Tuesday night starter/main/veg/rice combo for £9.95 per person. Worth a go!!!

We'd watched with interest as Bombay Fusion appeared on Qype and soon soared to the top of the TW…read moreTandoori's guide. The only problem was that a number of the reviewers were seemingly first or second timers and that always, maybe unfairly, makes me think they might be friends of the owner so, Mrs Idler & I decided to amble down last week to check it out and review it for proper.... So, it forms part of the poorly sub-divided Kelsey Arms. There's a partition in place to keep the pub separate but the gents loos still involve a stroll through t'other half and the drinking ladies need to walk through the restaurant. Ho hum. The manageress lady was, as previously reported lovely. Polite, attentive, knowledgeable and all you'd hope for. Top marks there. The food? Well our bill came out to 50 odd quid for three courses and we only drank water, so we're pricing near to the Junakhi & Spice Club here so it'd have to be good...... It wasn't. What it was was decent home cooking. Either that or the food they serve in pub curry nights (but at more like £30 for two). If you'd have dined at a friends house and eaten this you'd have been well impressed but not here. It wasn't good enough. My bhel puri was on the money - chick peas in a kinda crispy case but the good ladies tandoori king prawns were soggy, so to speak! The curried lamb was stew like, lacking in both spice and taste, and the peshwari nan coconut-less. The sag aloo was OK & the pilau rice copious & tasty but it didn't save the day. Worth a visit if you're drinking in the pub but that's all, I'm afraid. I know the manageress will read this & be disappointed but if she could reduce the prices she'd, rightly, sell lots more tables. Fine pub food not restaurant food. Sorry.

The Lamb Shank melted in the mouth and the large portion of Tandoori Mixed Grill made a nice change too. I'll challenge anyone to eat the large portions and Kiran is only too happy to box up what's left for you to take home. Kirans food philosophy is to serve dishes without food colourings or swimming in oil. I certainly recommend trying Bombay Fusion for a different Indian experience.

I have heard a few people describe this place as the best Indian restaurant in Brighton. Whilst I…read moredon't think I've eaten in enough to warrant corroborating that statement, I can say I ate here recently and it was pretty damn good! What I particularly like about Shahi Tandoori is that it is split into two quite separate spaces, one side is the restaurant and one is the takeaway. This is genius! There's nothing more annoying than people wandering through while you're eating to pick up their order, letting a draft in and spoiling the ambiance of the restaurant. Well Shahi has it covered. Food-wise, the side dishes are all great...I particularly like the Bombay Aloo, the Sag Paneer and the Onion Bhajis- delicious! I can also recommend the Vegetable Balti and Chicken Tikka Masala. Since this place is just around the corner, we often pop down to pick up a few side dishes to go with a home-cooked curry and they never look at us funny, despite our paltry order! I like them.

You can never have enough good quality Indian restaurants (so says I), without doubt Shahi Tandoori…read moredeserves to be added to that category. It's located in an odd place at the bottom of Ditchling Rise, because of the location you might never have come this way, I really would recommend it though. 'Shahi' is a little bit cheaper then the more central Indian restaurants (and take aways, they do both). The food is also of a very good quality; I had the rogan josh and passanda, both of which I could eat 7 days a week. The area isn't the nicest, the decor is a little dated, but it's a fantastic place filled with Indian charm (and food).
