Oh my goodness. Have you ever had a meal that you just never wanted to end. This was that kind of meal. One of my girlfriends recommended this place to me since we were going to be in Brighton and I'm so grateful she did. It was difficult to settle on just two dishes from the menu but finally decided on the Persian Chicken Biryani and the Himachal Chickpea, Squash Curry. Oh. My. God. Seriously. I can't even put into words how fantastic our meal was. We were both stuffed when we finished yet still wanted to order more because we didn't want the happiness to end. This was, by far, the best Indian meal I'd had in all of England... or Canada... or I'll bet, should I ever go to India, there too! Absolutely fabulous. The chicken in the biryani was tender and juicy, the rice perfectly cooked. The sides supporting this dish were incredible especially the chutney! The chickpea/squash curry was to die for. I don't think I've ever had a dish more flavourful than this one. Every mouthful ended with a satisfying sigh. This meal was worth the trip the Brighton.

King Thali is the way to go! For 13.50, you get a complete meal with various vegetables, riata, naan, rice, dal, and even dessert on top of a main dish of your choice. I had a late lunch (around 1:30) and still got through perhaps 2/3 of the dish because of so much food. The spiciness of the dishes were dialed down one notch, however. My simmered chicken with one chili pepper had almost no kick to it. Nonetheless, it was delicious to eat with the vegetables, rice, and naan. I love the space as well - very open and conducive to natural lighting everywhere.

Really like this place! Though I can appreciate the attractiveness of going to a small hole-in-the wall restaurant that serves amazing food, I also really appreciate bigger restaurants that can still deliver on quality. All the servers were so kind and upbeat! Which I find surprising since we came in an hour before they ended their lunch opening. I could immediately see people with huge metal plates that were loaded with smaller dishes and I got so excited, I really love the idea of trying several things. And that's exactly what I got when I ordered the King Thali plate with lamb. Holy moly, so much good stuff. The only thing about trying so many different flavors is that some don't work well together or some don't work right after the other. And I'm pretty sure my stomach was really really confused, but my tongue felt perfectly fine! (Except for when I dumbly ate a whole chilli pepper, my fault entirely). There was a good amount of deliciously tender meat, sitting in a savory sauce. Even though the rice is supposed to be the most plain part, it was actually really tasty by itself! I wasn't a big fan of the pickled eggplant, the pineapple side was ok, the tomato/mango side was ok, the purple coconut shavings were ok. I really loved the crisp (poppadum?) and the piece of flatbread. THE PAKORA (?) was so good, I loved the fritters the plate came with. And the lentil daal was pretty nice as well. Almost forgot! We ordered the pani puri to start, and it's really light and has a nice filling, but it felt like eating something close to nothing. It's a good starter for that though. To end it all, the carrot cream cheese dessert was a nice bite to finish it all off. I would recommend this restaurant!

Not to be dramatic but this was the best meal i've ever eaten. The service to start was great, we were greeted with a smile and treated with the same energy the entire visit. I tried the cucumber collins to drink, super refreshing with a little bit of tart lime. My friend and i ordered 3 plates to share and it was more than enough food. Everything was amazing, don't try the free. peppers though if you don't like spicy Wish i lived in England because I would be here weekly (probably daily).

Picked it just because of the name. I will never forget the delicious dinner my friends and I had. Do not miss this one! Next time I am in Brighton I will definitely return.

One of the reasons I love Yelp is making friends from all over the UK and the world. I had received a recent telling off from fellow Yelper and foodie Gemma G that I hadn't explored her home town of Brighton much despite living so close in south London. So, Chilli Pickle had the honour of being Gemma's first attempt to sell Brighton to me as a culinary destination. Once I had negotiated the notorious West Street (she had been kind enough to warn me about it!), I was into the very quaint and fun Laines area of Brighton and I did enjoy peering into the various shops on my way to the restaurant. I gather that Chilli Pickle has just moved into its new premises on Jubilee St and it was nice to see an independent restaurant on a street also housing Yo Sushi, Las Iguanas and Carluccio's. I would echo Tim W's words in calling Chilli Pickle an Indian bistro rather than a curry house. This is reflected in its decor, right from the giant plant pots outside through to the exotic accessories like tiffin carriers at the door to the big tin plates that the food is served on. The vibe was very chic and carried the buzz of a city cocktail bar with the mainly young professional crowd dining here on the Wednesday evening that we visited. The upmarket feel is carried through the offerings on the menu, both in ingredients (venison, crab and scallop feature) and price (£3.95 for 3 poppodoms and chutneys). The dishes range quite widely across the globe, from Nepalese momos (steamed dumplings) to chicken biryani from Hyderabad to south Indian lentil cakes. With such a wide choice, I was actually quite impressed that we were quite decisive. We had some obligatory popoddoms to start as we perused the menu. Going for a range of classics to test out the kitchen, we settled on masala dosa (rice pancake filled with spiced potato and peas) and the Chilli Pickle tandoori platter, offering masala lamb chop, lamb seekh kebab, chicken tikka and chilli chicken thigh. Both dishes were served with an assortment of pickles, chutneys, dips and bread, all of which were announced by the waiter as the dishes were delivered. Perhaps the most valuable piece of advice was not to eat the 'drumstick' vegetable which came in the sambar curry broth accompanying the dosa because 'it might cause you to choke to death'! My passion fruit cooler drink sadly didn't deliver much passion fruit flavour though Gemma seemed happy with her Kingfisher beer - as her review states, she needed the numbing effect after her day at work! I'm spoilt for good curry houses near me in south London and also from growing up in Malaysia. The ingredients were first class and the cooking accurate and the food was well presented. However, the flavours didn't really contrast much between the different things which we ate, something which would have earned Chilli Pickle a top Yelp rating from me. However, Chilli Pickle and my own wander round part of Brighton has convinced that there is certainly more worth exploring in the culinary world of Brighton. I look forward to it. Thanks, Gemma!

I've been to the darling, bustling Chilli Pickle twice now, it's time for some words to get done written on this high concept Indian diamond. SO.MUCH.FOOD. Both times I left regretting the last few bites but then I think "no regrets!" and I have a few more and then I'm loosening my belt as I walk out because I want to basically lie down in the street and snooze my way through the digestion process. Needless to say? The portions are quite generous, and tasty as well. Service = stellar. I lunched with colleagues weekday, and on a recent weekend trip to Brighton headed back with my infant son and husband. Both times we were met with wonderful welcomes, great hospitality start to finish. High class, very polished and friendly. Everything I sampled was great. I can't even remember because I had a food induced brain coma of sorts, but I loved it all. The specials/combos are great and allow you to try a few different things and all the sides are also good. The garlic naan = perfection. Not hard to see why I was leaving so full now, right? Oh and pour a chai on top of that too. And a Bloody Mary. Ok now I'm mixing up my visits, but suffice it to say if you're after a good meal with some great drinks in a festive atmosphere, Chili Pickle is a great bet. *Pro-tip on the kid menu -- the kati roll is HUGE. I was thinking it was going to be a smaller portion but its massive. If you've got smaller kids you can easily split one for a few of them. *Kid-friendly: high chairs available, they'll store your buggy out of sight and a changing table in the loo. Bonus. *Would be good for groups, it's spacious -- make a booking.

Paneer Pasanda: cheese tandoor baked and served in almond gravy with saffron, cream, and green chili.

British curry is no joke. The Brits take their curry so seriously that they host the annual British Curry Awards - affectionately dubbed the curry Oscars - fully decked with a red carpet, celeb presenters, and only the best Indian fare for their foodie-studded audience. Spoiler alert: The Chilli Pickle earned an award from the 'academy' with wins in 2010 and 2012 (for Most Innovative Restaurant and Best Casual Restaurant, respectively). Oh yessiree, they're the real McCoy! As soon as I finished devouring the best Indian meal of my life, my woes began. The Chilli Pickle is located 5,385 miles away from my home! Sorry, San Francisco friends - but you can't Postmates this goodness. On a soggy Wednesday we headed to The Chilli Pickle for a late lunch and were greeted with a bright and modern setting and a menu packed with tantalizing items. I was torn between ordering the Paneer Pasanda and the Cochin Chicken Curry, but in the end, the lure of almond gravy, saffron, cream, and green chilli won. So Paneer Pasanda it was, and soon there were fireworks... in my mouth. Though you might balk at the prices, my entree came loaded with all the accoutrements - I'm talking pilau rice, dal, veggies, chutney, salad, raita, and naan. Well worth the splurge; you'll taste the difference! The only sour part of my meal was 45 minutes in, as we approached the end (sob). Even after I got back to London, my experience at the Chilli Pickle was top of mind - so much that I ordered Indian takeway the very next night. Big mistake, because even though that next meal was good, there was no comparison to the magic I gleefully consumed in Brighton. Multiple British Curry awards, a current 5-year streak of Michelin Bib Gourmands, and a well-earned 4.5 star rating on Yelp. These guys are doing everything right.

    Chicken momos
    Gemma G.

Well, I came back for round two, and as promised here is my updated review... Food on this occasion definitely warrants five stars. I started with the Chicken Momos - beautifully flavoured steam dumplings served with a sweat-inducing pepper dipping sauce and a rather unnecessary spring onion broth. For main course I went to the Moilly Seafood - this dish was presented in a beautiful fashion - the curry was served in a silver pot with crab claws protruding out and a scallop shell for presentation. The curry included prawns, scallops, four big crab claws laden with meat and a large piece of huss. The curry sauce was beautifully fragrant with flavours of coconut and ginger coming through. The curry was accompanied by a steamed rice cake that had the unusual texture of sponge cake but was great for dipping in the curry sauce! I was desperate to sample the desserts and had my eye on the rabri but alas I just couldn't fit it in. Unfortunately, the service was a bit of a let down on this occasion. 30 minutes to make a cocktail? Please don't leave a girl with a hot and spicy sauce and nothing to put out the fires with. On my last visit the service was exceptional so maybe it was just an off day. Oh well, I'll just have to come back for round three...

    Vegetarian Thali
    Shannon G.

I've always gone here for lunch during the week so the service is never slow as some people have previously mentioned. I'm having a hard time deciding on my rating as I have had better (Hove Tandoori in Hove, Masala Zone in London). The food was tasty but it's not the best I've ever had. And the atmosphere is very very good. I love the small touches - tin platters, goblet type glasses. I usually have a vegetarian/vegan Thali (they even have King Thali's which have a few more items and a dessert) which is a massive variety of delicious Indian food. This place ROCKS. I don't think I will ever be able to enjoy a curry that isn't from here. They've ruined me for life. We ordered a MASSIVE amount off the menu (go hard or go home, kids) and demolished the lot because its so good! We had the lamb, the salmon, chicken, dosa and loads of sides and naans and things. The staff are exceptional here and I would seriously recommend it just based on the staff, even if the awards and food do speak for themselves. 100% the best curry in Brighton. Don't go anywhere else.

    King Thali lunch!
    Jamie H.

In Brighton and my sister had heard a lot of good things about this place so we checked it out for a very late lunch. Even though we turned up at 2.50 (lunch finished at 3) they were more than happy to accommodate us. Both of us ordered the Grand Thali for just £10 (special price on a Monday!) and were way too stuffed to finish it all. You get a choice from a menu of 9-10 different curries and there was great variety. The Chicken Kurchen was my choice and it had a great level of spice sitting in the background that crept up on you when it felt like it was getting too weak. Alongside the curry there was a plethora of different little treats such as lentil dal, bhaji, pakora, rice, dhokla (like a savoury sponge cake), pickle, raita and a 'mini' naan that was anything but that. Would definitely recommend this place for Indian food and will be back again.

What I particularly like about Shahi Tandoori is that it is split into two quite separate spaces, one side is the restaurant and one is the takeaway. This is genius! There's nothing more annoying than people wandering through while you're eating to pick up their order, letting a draft in and spoiling the ambiance of the restaurant. Well Shahi has it covered. Food-wise, the side dishes are all great...I particularly like the Bombay Aloo, the Sag Paneer and the Onion Bhajis- delicious! I can also recommend the Vegetable Balti and Chicken Tikka Masala. Since this place is just around the corner, we often pop down to pick up a few side dishes to go with a home-cooked curry and they never look at us funny, despite our paltry order! I like them.

It's located in an odd place at the bottom of Ditchling Rise, because of the location you might never have come this way, I really would recommend it though. The food is also of a very good quality; I had the rogan josh and passanda, both of which I could eat 7 days a week. The area isn't the nicest, the decor is a little dated, but it's a fantastic place filled with Indian charm (and food).

They have some many good dishes but I always seem to use that as a solid cornerstone to my order. Being so close myself and friends have given Bhindis quite a bit of business and delivery orders have always arrived promptly and the delicious food hasn't disappointed as of yet.

Bhindis, I must say, has the edge most winter nights as they'll deliver. When this place opened a few years ago, it went by the name 'Balti Towers' and quickly changed it... infringement of copyright? I have no idea. I though it was a great pun but I guess they wanted to be taken more seriously. Bhindis are very proud of the fact that they have an entirely open kitchen, so you can watch the chefs at work while you wait for your curry and it's plain to see that this place is both hygienic and efficient. The front-of-house service is great too. The food here is absolutely delicious, not greasy and super tasty. They use fresh herbs in all their dishes and you can taste the freshness of the meat and veg too. As much as I love the Agra I think Bhindis may have the edge with it's pricing too. Most dishes have rice included and you can choose between a large and small portion of your main meal, with quite a noticeable price difference. They also have this gorgeous bright orange coleslaw-type stuff (sounds weird but trust me, it's lush) which I dip my poppadums and bhajis into with immense joy. If you love a great curry, then Bhindis is a must.
