We strolled out of the bookstore across the street looking for a sweet refreshing drink. We spotted The Spice & Tea Exchange & immediately went inside. It's a pretty shop, filled to the brim with an array of tea leaves to make yourself a cozy hot tea or a refreshing iced tea. They carry all sorts of salts, all kinds of peppers, a variety of spices and an assortment of sugars. I bought hibiscus sugar, it is amazing with hibiscus tea or an agua fresca. They carry herbs to make dipping oil, it is delicious. We selected a pomegranate rasberry loose leaf and they steeped it and poured ice over it and it was the perfect refreshment for a hot day. They carry tea accessories such as tea pots, mugs, special bent spoons, infusers, matcha kits, tea thermometers and resusable cups with their logos. I'm obsessed with herbs and tea, so this shop is right up my alley. I love the apothecary vibe, with all the herbs displayed in jars--it's great to be able to easily open them and smell the different scents. The huge variety and their limited flavors always allow me to find something new to take home. Now... this is my first time at this location and I did not expect it to be such a beautiful spot. I am not a tea connoisseur, but this made me want to buy all the Tea blends. The guy that was creating tea blends and steeping to make actual drinks was very knowledgeable with the information. My latest visit was much better as I was greeted by Stephanie. She assisted me so that I could get my specific spices quickly. As I was waiting in line, she asked if I would care for some iced tea. I told her I wasn't a fan of iced tea, but she suggested I try a small sample of their Lavender Lemonade iced tea. It was amazing! After the tasting, I purchased a glass ($5.50). I liked the fact that it didn't even taste like iced tea. She also recommended I try a sample of the Black Truffle Garlic seasoning (that was in an oil base) with a chunk of bread. You can have them brew a cup of any of these teas at their tea counter. If it's a cold winter day, then it's pretty nice! My hidden gem from this spot is their Berbere spice blend, so that you can dupe the popular African street corn that you can get at Animal Kingdom Theme Park! I was so pleasantly surprised by this hidden gem! My husband and I were a little early for our dinner reservation, so we were trying to kill some time and wandered into this shop because of the name. Before I arrived, I had in mind to buy loose leaves, but who would've thought I would leave with so much knowledge about the loose leaves they carry? Kristen was the person who serviced me from when I walked in to when I left; Kristen made this experience unforgettable. Kristen walked me through the store and provided so much information with each wall that held their spices, loose-leaf salts/seasonings, and custom blends. Their Custom Blend wall ranged from the most straightforward seasoning to some clever seasonings. Who would've thought to make an Espresso Steak Rub ?! Some things to make notes of are as follows: - Everything that is sold is packaged already. I bought a 2oz of Blueberry Black Tea for $15.78. - The tea will is ranged from decaffeinated(bottom shelf) to highly caffeinated( top shelf) - You have different ways of purchasing your favorite item, a bulk, a sampler bag, and a medium bag. -Have a special someone who loves teas and spices; you can make a gift basket with their specially woven baskets from Ghana, Africa! - In the back of the store, you can visually experience how they dehydrate fruit peels and herbs. - In the back of the store, they have a tea shop where they can prepare any drink of choice, hot or cold. This store is amazing, I'm glad the reopened after the shut down! I visit this location every time I'm in the area of Downtown Winter Park/Park Ave. The crime brûlée tea here is delicious! They have a high quality of teas and spices! I came here to get some smoked paprika for a recipe, and was pleasantly surprised by the variety they had! The staff here are very friendly and helpful with questions about country of origin on spices, and my other quality questions. We had wonderful conversation about the teas and spices while my crane brûlée tea was seeping. I'll have to come back to stock up on teas. Definitely read about The Spice & Tea Exchange CEO and Co-owner Amy Freeman's inspiring rags-to-riches story, "How a Homeless High School Dropout Became a CEO" (link at bottom)! I went here wanting to add something to my friend's gift, which ended up being the "Chipotle Lime Steak Bowls" spice kit (4 servings) for $5.49. The Spice & Tea Exchange looks intimidating at first if you're not well-versed to spices, but the staff is very knowledgeable and they don't try to up-sell you. The products are on the pricier end but if you don't mind spending on gourmet quality specialty spices, sugar, and tea, you'll love this place. I apparently spoke to the owner Linda, whom I initially thought was a sales associate--not until after I left the store I saw her as the owner in a Winter Park advertisement. I asked Linda if she could help me find some spices as part of a gift for new cooks like my friend. I love to cook but have basic spices knowledge too. She led me to a section of spice kits like Coconut Thai and Tandoori Chicken if I recall correctly. She was great at breaking down different food choices some people like and pointed to the respective kits. Linda also showed some recipe cards with spices to inspire the inner chef in every person. You can ask any associate there to put together the spices in one packet based on the recipe to customize your own spice-kit like the pre-selected one I picked. The sugars intrigued me the most, because it ranged from bourbon to chocolate to blueberry, all types of sugars with different flavors! The tea and salt varieties were great, combinations and flavors you would never think of that would go together. Another associate or maybe co-owner approached me at the salt section. He was friendly and opened a jar of black truffle salt encouraging me smell the aroma. It was earthy and robust! He explained that this salt is his favorite even though he doesn't like mushrooms. The truffle mushroom flavor is not overpowering that even mushroom haters like him would like. Although I didn't end up buying salt and anything else except one kit due to my budget, I will certainly will return to buy something there again! The place definitely had the ambience of an Old World trade post or even felt like I was walking into a ship (without the ocean-waves). The decor and concept of the store was founded in St. Augustine, FL, ao that's probably from where the inspiration came. Ok so I am obsessed with this place!! This is one of my favorite stores! Although it's been a while since I've been I hope to visit soon. They have such a large variety of spices,teas, salts and sugars! I especially love the spices they have! I love to cook so I usual head straight to spices. They have simple spices and sugar with different flavors. For example, lavender lemon sugar (I use for tea) and green chile sugar (I love to use for hot chocolate). I can only remember just a few because of the vast selection. But I also enjoy cooking with the teriyaki ginger and I believe the other is called coconut thai spice. Those 2 are my favorite! I love using the coconut thai spice with the coconut vinaigrette from across the street. I make an absolutely delicious shrimp meal!!!
