I hate dating apps and find them somewhat limiting and dehumanizing. I tried this out as an alternative. I still believe a good matchmaking service could save professionals so much time - they just need to be executed better.
NOTE: I only paid to be IN the database (I think this was $200 or $250 - no guaranteed dates but you have a shot at being set up with a paid client), and never paid the higher fee to be set up on a date.
Pros: The meetups ARE good! You have a chance to meet and hit it off with someone in real life, and they set these up for various age ranges. I did go on a date with a guy I met at one of these meet ups. We had a lot in common but not quite a romantic spark.
Cons: I was reached out to about 2 dates. I don't think you ever get a photo prior to the set up. The first person was a 52 year old man. I am 34, and this was outside my age range (+/- 5 years), so I turned it down. The second one I accepted, but honestly I should have asked more questions. I never got this man's age and assumed he'd be within my range given I turned down the first one but he appeared to be 50s as well (just a guess), was VERY socially awkward, and since I agreed to the set up I felt it would be rude to leave early. Had I known the guys age or had a photo - I would never have accepted.
From this experience, I actually feel like going to meetups or using the apps ARE better options. I am able to at least see a photo beforehand (which can save SO much time and awkwardness), and get important points such as age, marital status, etc up front. I ended up meeting my SO on a popular app, which consequently is how Abby met hers per her podcast, Ghosted, where she does have interesting guests and share advice. read more
