I would say stay away from recruiters in general. There was a time when Robert half was headed shoulders, a more professional effective recruiter than the others on the market. Contacted The Creative Group based on excellent previous experience (Kimberly Danford was absolutely dedicated to getting me leads, getting me in the door). This was 2012. Fast forward 7 years. I get Elizabeth (T.). (Contacted TCG via LinkedIn app, she responded quickly via email, met with her that week, we discussed what I wanted (7 year design pro w/ excellent references and a strong portfolio). She says lots to choose from. Shake hands. Never heard from her again. Emailed half dozen times. Called two different times. Reception says "Oh that's weird" when I say she hasn't responded to repeated emails, "here's her voicemail." Second time I call (a few days later, after still getting no email reply nor return call from Elizabeth), reception, after I relay same, again(!) says, "Huh that's odd she wouldn't call you back." send me to vm again. I then apply to a job I found (again on LI if it matters) that has another TCG rep as point of contact, Shayne (R.). He (although cld be she, I only ever read it in two emails, ever exchanged). I get another quick reply after I send a second email right away from my personal gmail acct just to be sure someone's receiving. Response says do you have any experience making brand style guides? I say yes and reply with two examples attached. I don't hear back for three days so I email Shayne again asking if anyone had had a chance to take a look or was there a chance either the employer or he might like to call or meet me? (I didn't exactly want to go back to their offices again, but was willing to go extra mile if it gets *some kind of ball rolling). After many years of living in California, Katie Doble found me on LinkedIn to tell me about a great contract opportunity in Denver that was an excellent fit for my experience and pay expectations. In a crazy coincidence, my wife and I had talked about moving to Denver for years, and I ended up taking the gig that TCG found for me. 11 months later, I couldn't have been happier with my experience with TCG, namely Katie Doble and Danielle Glass in the Denver office. This was my first ever contract job (I was still a W-2 though TCG), so I had a few things to get used to, but they were there with me every step of the way. I felt like I had friends in the office who were always willing to help me whenever questions came up. From flying me out for my interview, helping me get settled in a new city, checking on me every now and then, and making sure that my paychecks and expense reimbursements hit the bank on time, every time, I felt lucky to have such a great team behind me at TCG. I even needed some extra legwork from them when I was buying a house, not an easy feat when you're a contractor, and they were there to help me with the documentation that I needed. Sometimes when you are on a mission to find your perfect job you have to jump into the temping world, and the world of temping can be a scary and mean mean place. RHI is a HUGE corporation where they make money when you work, so don't expect that much more than $10-$20/hour because the agency themselves are pooling in probably double that on your behalf. I am sure there are some good temp agencies as well as even some great temping opportunities out there, but I never landed on any of them, and they don't give a rats tushi what your ideal goal for work is, all they want is their commission.... So, they pretend to listen and pretend to really help you look, but let's be honest folks, it is a feisty world out there and they have to make money too, so wherever they can plop you they will. And, they will sometimes even tell you things about the job that are not true, like you will get to move more than just your fingers. One of the jobs I had was data entry, and I had to stop after one day because my wrists hurt so much.... Just not worth it. I was very aware of how different the market was going to be and I had no real connections to the creative industry out there. I'd never worked with a recruiter before, but did a bit of research and saw I had a mutual connection to Shayne from a previous life in a totally separate industry, got an intro, and started working with her. She was great and honestly much more committed to helping me and getting to know me than the other recruitment agencies I reached out to. Like worlds better. As a video producer, most of the recruitment agencies were honest with me, saying that not many companies were looking for a video producer, more likely to be looking for someone with more digital project management experience, etc. And those other recruiters ended up just never ever getting back in touch, barely even gave me the time of day. Though Shayne was also honest with me that it could be a challenge and may take some time, she also actually followed up and did the work to get to know me and what I wanted. She got creative with her connections to try and find opportunities for me. At a point, I sort of put a hold on things with Shayne when I ran into some hurdles in my DC life, which she was super respectful and understanding of. Still, I wasn't sure things would pick back up even once I was ready to hit the application trail again. That is when Steph reached out to me with an opportunity that I had seen on glassdoor etc., but initially thought wouldn't be the best fit. But knowing that my goal was to get out there with a job in place, I decided it couldn't hurt to try. She set me up with an initial phone screen/short interview and I was so so surprised by how much I loved the hiring manager's ideas and energy, her vision for the department, and the potential for me to really add true value. I had coincidentally already booked a trip to CO for my birthday with my family, so I let the manager and Steph both know and Steph went above and beyond to make an in-person interview happen at a time that worked for my insane vacation/family schedule. She did what any great recruiter might do (I assume, I have no idea since this was my first true experience, ha) and sent me preparation materials, suggestions, and set up a pre-interview call with me to talk through things that might come up, etc. The interview went super well and afterwards, Steph again followed up with a call to have some Real Talk. She asked me some kind of tough questions and let me know that I should be prepared to answer them if the company were to come back with an offer. Suddenly moving across the country was feeling real and I had to look at it in a very real way. Hugely helpful. I ended up asking for some more clarity on the role they wanted to fill since it seemed they had a lot of ideas and I needed more information before I could offer my salary requirements. Steph was a BOSS in that process. I was so grateful to have her in my court, doing the follow ups with the company, selling me as a candidate, and giving me frequent updates throughout the process. In the end, I got a totally unexpected opportunity to interview for another company, completely unrelated to TCG, and was extended an offer that I ultimately accepted. Marc Geyer, literally the name of the man that changed my life over the course of a weekend. Yup, 2 days, that was it. I was working the insert, default, graphic design position at a dead end sign shop with the lame supervisor, and talentless boss. (You know the one) and I wanted more for me, I wanted better. I'd get off work, get home super burned out, and apply for jobs till midnight, and do it all over again the next day. I did this for months. Until I saw a position I really wanted, and The Creative Group was looking for talent to place there. I applied with TCG (that what the cool kids call it lol) on Tuesday. One of the coolest dudes I have ever met, let alone interviewed with, Marc Geyer, hit me up the next day, liked my portfolio, and we scheduled my interview for that Friday. He said the company he was talent hunting for liked my portfolio, and things may be going well! He told me they may have me take an art test. I showed the initiative of offering and then doing art for them THAT weekend, telling Marc I would have a 3d animation for him by Sunday to send to the company monday morning. Bye bye weekend! It became a blur of sketching, modeling, texturing, lighting, and rendering out. I sent it to Marc Sunday, he sent it to the company monday morning, they told Marc to send me in that Wednesday! I quickly got interviewed and was told it should be easy to be employed out here but unfortunately I have not heard of any opportunities for what I am looking for. Once I did, it was someone else - not who they told me I needed to speak to the other times I called. He was very proactive and helpful, but then once I received the emails from him I needed to get started, I got passed to yet another person who set up a FaceTime with me, only to cancel. I understand there was a snowstorm and she had to leave early, but when I called back to reschedule I left a voicemail and guess what...it's been three days and no call back. I was not impressed with the lady I met with as she was unprepared and had a weak hand shake. She was very dismissive and despite my master's degree and work experience I was not qualified for the available HR opportunities that only paid $12-15 an hr. Perhaps some people have luck with Office Team, but I do not need to be talked down by someone with only a bachelor's degree and only oversees four other employees. read more

Having worked in the creative industry as a writer, editor, small business owner and fashion designer, i feel i have a pretty decent resume and portfolio. i submitted my resume to the creative group online only to receive an email back saying they had no potential opportunities that matched my qualifications and would not be able to help me. not, 'we'll keep your resume on file' or 'there's nothing at this time, but keep checking with us,' just a flat, 'we're not gonna help you find a position.' i'm sorry, but that's such a low level of professionalism for an employment agency. i have no problem with rejection, but when it's put so rudely and bluntly, with no promise of any of their staff to actually do their jobs, i'm left far less than impressed. my advice? look elsewhere. read more
