Start, as they have, with top notch, fresh ingredients. Next cook the very best ingredients simply, and with passion. I could see the other happy diners receive their dishes and the food just looked so delicious. Be sure you complement the key ingredients on the plate with the supporting cast for instance I had Dublin bay prawns pil pil (€11). These are the best cold water prawns and they are just top notch; as warm water prawns don't ever come close in taste. This place served them up with finely sliced fresh red chilli (green chilli wouldn't pair as well) and a garlicky oil that delivered a delicious spice kick with a tangy after-burn mouth feel. The spicy balance was just right and what I really liked here too was their judicious use of garlic oil. I've had prawns pil pil in places where the prawns were over-cooked to dry, hard lumps swimming in copious vivid bright red pimento peppery oil. Here they served me up two types of bread - one seeded & lightly toasted that I used to dip into the chilli garlic oil so giving me a bit of crunch and light, wonderful wheaten bread that I heavily buttered with salted butter and a side salad. My wife opted for their seafood chowder which was crammed with fish and delicious. She also got the delightful wheaten bread. We are so used to 'white' potato based chowder - it was tomato based here so viva la difference. We also had very good cappuccinos (€3) and these came with a little home-made shortbread on the side and this too was a really nice touch. Service was friendly but not overbearing. I've two observations; the raw sliced red onion with the salad on my plate was acrid and as a result it clashed with the other tastes. This is easily resolved though - just soak the fresh sliced onion in cold water (or vinegar) for 10 minutes - or if you want to be posh instead soak them in lime or lemon juice for 10 minutes. The second observation: I didn't notice sea salt on the table, but perhaps it was there and I we were too engaged in my dining experience. In short this place is wonderful and well worth finding even if you are only passing by this town.

Since we were on this side of the town, we decided to make the most of it and look for a meal of seafood. I had Octopussy's Tapas bookmarked when researching for the trip, so we decided to stop in for lunch. It was a Thursday at around 1:30, and the restaurant was almost full. It's a very small restaurant and it's mostly high top tables with bar stools, so it wasn't exactly looking baby-friendly, since had our 8-month old and a stroller with us. Luckily, they have a small back room (literally a room that can probably seat 4-6 people) that was available, and they seat us back there. It was nice and cozy, and cute - decorated like you were on a ship. Here is what we ordered: -Carlingford Oysters (served in the shell with fresh lemon) - these oysters were everything! They were big, shucked properly, and tasted super fresh. It didn't need anything but the lemon but they did recommend us trying their housemade hot sauce. We did and we loved it, and ended up buying a bottle to take home. We also ended up ordering some more oysters for dessert (lol) -Seafood Chowder (squid, mussels, smoked coley, & prawns served with homemade brown bread) - this was full of seafood. It is heavy though since chowder is cream-based so I would recommend sharing this, as opposed to ordering one on your own. The brown bread was also very nice -Seafood Paella (paella rice, chorizo, mussels, gambas, squid rings, and smoked coley) - another dish filled with seafood. They don't skimp out here! I could have done without the squid rings (they tasted rubber-bandy, like they're from frozen), and the smoked coley. I'm not a huge fan of smoked foods. I didn't really taste it in the chowder - maybe the cream covered it up, but I was able to taste it more in the paella -Whiskey Scallops (cooked in whiskey butter) - very rich but the scallops were good. You definitely want to dip some of the brown bread in this sauce There were so many other dishes we wanted to try but we had to stop ourselves from ordering too much for two people. Overall, it was a great meal and at these prices for seafood?! You really can't beat it.

Parked the Harley, went in expecting a white linen tablecloth place but was pleasently surprised to see a straightforward Pub/Bar. The staff were on hand and set us at a nice window seat. Menu looked fantastic and again simple, the place was also very busy for the time of day. What can I say about the food, ? it just blew you away, simple presentation and the taste was amazing all we could say to each other was we must come back by taxi so we could enjoy some wine as well..

It was my birthday so the lovely GF took me as a surprise, we were booked in for 7 and were a little late but we were the only ones there so needn't have bothered with a booking. The place gradually filled up from 7.30 on but I don't eat late so suits me. Everyone told me how great /wonderful/fantastic Mourne Seafood Bar was...but NO ONE told me this is where Sir Edmund Hillary trained before his ascent on Everest...I mean MAN IT WAS COLD!!!! They put us near the window and it was bad....we asked them to put heat on and it was great then. Food was fantastic, a smallish menu by some standards, but what you got was finger lickin' good! To start we had a mixture of chili prawns and hot and salty squid....mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm! For my main I had smoked haddock (it was a hard decision) which came on a bed of crushed spuds and vegetables, delicious! GF opted for the BIG pot of mussels (oink oink) in garlic, white wine and cream, with chips and a side of wheaten (which I ate oink oink oink!!!!!) To finish we shared the white chocolate cheesecake and mango and passion fruit mousse, pure heaven. But afterwards it was terrible...I needed a lie down, and I could hardly breathe!!! Too much good food, my 20 inch waist could hardly take it all in... serves me right for having a THIRD slice of the delicious wheaten. I just cant say no when it is there right in front of me begging to be eaten, with a gorgeous pat of real butter, not this make believe spread that might look the same as real butter but has the taste of used tractor oil. We will be back! And before too long . Go!

We waited to be seated but there wasn't anyone to seat us. We waited far too long and when the waitress - the older of the only two waitresses serving/ arrived. The greeting was flat and almost felt like she was being put out. She arrived just in time as the barman was about to seat us. I've eaten here hundreds of times over the years. I ordered oysters as a starter only for the waitress to return a few moments later to confirm they had none. Well that's a first. Carlingford Oyster company is a few miles away. So my order became seafood chowder and fillet steak medium. My side dish tobacco onions. My son also ordered the chowder which for the half lifetime I've been eating it here has been superb but not this time. We each knew it wasn't as rich and deep flavoured as before and we were really disappointed. This is one of their finest dishes and we really hope this is a one off. If it happens again we'll send it back and have it off the bill. The price charged means it must be ace every time. I asked for white pepper for my chowder the availability of which was uncertain and when it arrived the younger waitress said I was lucky. If white pepper isn't always available just close. It's not as important as salt is to cooking but it's great for seasoning. I often choose it over black pepper almost always. My fillet was requested medium and it came with a pepper sauce that didn't pour but moved sludge like in lumps in short it was gloop; if it had cream it wasn't discernible nor had it evidence of butter. It tasted factory made. One of the corner stones of the success of Fitzpatrick's was cooking based on classic French cooking (Escoffier) and sauces. It elevates their chowder and onion soups and makes sauces moreish - this pepper sauce is far away from this and it's not and nowhere near good enough. If Danny was still there this sauce wouldn't be and no chef would have had the nerve to put it before him. My fillet was well done, medium to well and medium as I proceeded through it. I'm not precious about it and it was tasty good quality meat which I enjoyed. I only draw a line at bloody meat. My son always opts for rare. The tobacco onions were superbly flavoured stand out 5 stars. I asked for English mustard for my steak but it never arrived and the two overworked waitresses were nowhere to be seen. As desserts weren't offered due to their invisibility I got up to pay. There were five or six guests in the doorway waiting to be seated just as we were earlier that evening and no waitress around. The barman took our payment and I didn't tip which I didn't like but I was not happy. I told the barman some of the issues lousy pepper sauce, non delivery of mustard and poor tasting chowder: he said he'd pass it on. Next time I will return food that's not up to the standard I'm used to at the prices charged.

We had previously booked so did not have to wait long for a table. Staff were very pleasant order was placed for drinks and the meal. Buffalo wings were superb and then everything went south. The quality of the steaks was not great. We had purchased steaks from the Centra in Tullyallen the previous week and the quality of the meat in the Monasterboice Inn was nowhere near as good. I ordered a medium rare steak and my wife ordered a medium steak... My wife's steak came and it was rare ... there was blood on the plate. She should have sent it back but didn't.. Our fault... The waitress was excellent, she saw my wife had hardly touched her steak and without prompting her, she deducted the steak from the bill. So for service 10/10 ... for the quality of the meal 4/10. It could have been an off day for the chef ... so I might give them another try on my own before I take guests there again.
