This really is a bit of a gem of a place so I almost don't want to tell people about it! The facility is lovely and, even though it's an old building, they keep it very fresh and clean looking with updated furnishing and fixtures while still maintaining a very homey feel. I love it when the fires are going and the bar is very cozy and bright. On this occasion, we chose the dining room. When we arrived, we were taken to a table in one of the larger rooms in the back that are more typically used for events. It was a lovely room but I preferred to be somewhere a little closer to the bar and main, older part of the building. The hostess was perfectly accommodating and this was no problem. Instead, my husband and I put in our orders at the bar while we had a drink and when our food was ready, they took us to a different table. The service was completely friendly and efficient. The food was absolutely delicious. I had a hard time choosing what to order, but settled on the fresh hake with roast potatoes, tomatoes and cauliflower puree. It was so so good. I ate everything. My husband got a steak and chips, which were perfectly cooked. The meals around ours looked very good, too. Donegan's also pulls a brilliant pint and we had both Guinness and Smithwicks. If you go you gotta try the bucky and smoke special, however if you just fancy a beer or maybe even a white russian all drinks are available once you bring them with you. Smoking is outdoors only so the place is nice and fresh inside and the smoke breaks are quite social. Theres usually a game of shithead or darts going and you can always give the arcade machine a go too. If your lucky you might even catch a movie night on the big screen and major sporting events are sometimes hosted aswell. The locals are friendly if you know them but can be hostile to newcomers initially. Not the kind of place you'd go if you were out to score but for a nice relaxed evening of boozing and always stimulating conversation she's your only man. *NB* Beware of the cat.

But perhaps the best bit is the Beer Garden, it is the best kept secret of this pub (until now). It is an oasis in the middle of a bustling town. A perfect retreat on a sunny day. There is also pool and darts for those who love their traditional pub games. There is often musicians strumming away to add to the laid back vibe of the place. Are you the designated driver? Well lucky for you their is a very well stocked off licence there too for you to pick up some of your favourite drinks to enjoy at home. We got our drinks without a problem, but then we watched the bartender refuse service to an older lady and her three friends -- who didn't even seem to be drinking yet -- saying the bar was closed. She politely asked for just one beer to share, even saying they'd drink it quickly, and he still refused. A few minutes later, someone else came up asking for a Jack Daniels "to drink fast," and he laughed and poured it without hesitation. Then another girl asked for two Guinness, and despite claiming the bar was closed, he said, "How can I say no to that?" and served her. Watching the older lady get singled out like that felt awful and unfair. On top of that, the bathroom was disgusting -- no toilet paper, no paper towels, and the toilet seat wouldn't stay up. Definitely not clean. We came here excited, but it wasn't worth it at all. Just a few doors down there's a fantastic place with great service that was far better than this experience. Sad one person can make her break a place.

Pat, Una, and their staff were wonderful. We were fortunate to be there during the euros, so I was able to take in the matches (my wife was less enthusiastic about this part). If you want to experience the Irish Midlands this is the place to go; both my wife and I travel and we try and avoid the touristy areas, preferring instead to spend our time meeting new people, and this trip provided that. Being American, I seldom get to have a good talk about football, but Pat was happy to oblige here. He's also made sure that every time I see Archie Gray take the pitch I will think of Weirs.
