I remember when I was young (wayyyy too young), this cinema opened and offered membership to all movie lovers, for a very small annual fee. I got the membership thanks to my dad, and naturally this was the place I went to, when I ever asked a girl out for a movie first time in my life (it was Miyazaki's Whisper of the Heart, or 耳をすませば / 夢幻街少女, in 1995). But it's more than just memory. The cinema is conveniently located in Yau Ma Tai, but also quite interestingly hidden inside an estate, like it is never intended for general public. It has since become my go-to place for non-mainstream movies, whether it is local or foreign. I still remember a lot of movies I watched here quite specifically. Breathless is one of them, Paris, je t'aime was another one. I must admit that, to many of your eyes, they are still pretty mainstream. And for the other half of you, you may on the other hand think I'm pretty pretentious or being pseudo-intellectual. Don't get my wrong, I like Hollywood movies as much as the guy next to me, but once a while you want to see some movies that "break the formula", and in Cinematheque Broadway you can find them available, all year round.

The seating was a little smaller than United States standards, and definitely what I'm used to lately (think: giant automatic reclining chairs). However, it was definitely more than adequate. The sound was decent but not amazing. The visuals weren't stunning but got the job done. Lightsabers were shown fine. Service was decent as the ticket counter lady was patient and probably realized that we're not from around these parts. I appreciated the fact that the facilities (lobby and theater) were clean. Against American pricing standards, this place wasn't cheap.

Words that could adequately describe Newport Theatre: Ghetto, rundown, cheap, limited, and small…read more These words might be interpreted negatively, but know this: This was, at one point, my go-to theatre in all of Kowloon. Say what you will about HK's largest working class neighborhood, but this was where I could count on catching a flick without the guilt of paying more. On a surface level, Newport Theatre doesn't have much going for it. The place is tiny, with only two screens and rotating movies that are mainly western and local HK ones every week. From an interior perspective, it needs a gut renovation -- peeling wallpaper, raggedy seats, and subpar facilities. Concessions are also disappointing; much like the theatre's movie variety, it is limited. The fact it's situated in the heart of Mongkok would mean it's absurdly crowded on occasion, which it can be. Go during the school / work hours and the crowd is drastically less of an issue. To get a ticket is relatively easy, just head directly to the window in the front of the theatre where an agent (who likely will not be able to speak great English, so be forewarned) will help you choose assigned seating and available times for the movie showing that evening. Contrary to the look of it, they do accept credit cards (though cash is always recommended). The theatre itself is also small, but not enough to deter me. Screens are not fit for digital projection or IMAX worthy stuff, but it gets the job done. The same bodes for the sound, which is equally important as the picture quality. When the ticket prices range from $50-80 throughout the day, it's certainly not a terrible way to pass the time at all.

And the next thing you know, we are buying tickets to see Ralph Breaks the Internet (WTF?) lol. IFC is a high-end shopping mall in Central, Hong Kong, so this cinema would not be anything less impressive. The tickets were $120 each, it is more expensive than other cinemas in Hong Kong. There is a full wine bar inside the lounging area. The washroom is nice and clean. There is a concession stand selling popular Asian snacks (squid balls, boneless wings, etc.) The best was the sweet caramel popcorn, I can easily eat a large lol. The only con at Palace was the size of the 'big screen', it is quite small. Nonetheless, the leather reclining seats were very comfortable. We picked seats for the very back row in House 1, and there was plenty leg room. As they also charge for 3D glasses, it's best to bring your own (or keep the ones you bought from them for next time.) Location Location Location!…read more At the top floor of Times Square, this is just the most convenient location to catch a movie after shopping, before dinner or whatever the reason you are at CWB. With multiple screens, you can catch all the first run movies. And the matter of fact, I was here twice in a week! The theatre is a little older but well maintained and quite spacious. After midnight, there are still handful of restaurants opens for a quick snack within walking distance.

The first class of movie seats! Too bad that don't have that here in HK. This morning, I found the seats surprisingly small. Narrow and a little hard. Not very comfortable. The move price tickets are commensurate with the atmosphere. Tickets for 2D movie run 130 hkd and if you buy online there is a 10 hkd service fee. Definitely not cheap. I usually buy my tickets online because I like to know where I'm sitting. The process for printing your tickets is quick and efficient (just a swipe of the credit card used). The movie theater itself is nice. There is pretty good food options a full stocked bar. Each screening room is fairly compact so as long as you aren't sitting too far in the front you will have a good seat. The seats are wide and comfortable. The screen is big and makes for a pleasurable viewing experience. I have seen a number of movies here and prefer it over the movie theater at Times Square or IFC.

Not cheap.. even In Hong Kong dollars. Compared to movie theatres at home the seating seems a little old. And the IMAX theatre screen was the same as our normal screens. However, I did like the snacks that they served at the concession stand. They had chocolate flavored and sour cream flavored popcorn. You can get half and half in the box. I also got curry fish balls. Quality of the food was pretty good.

Though it is marketed as a "new" cinema but in fact the facilities is pretty dated. The seating is worn out and in need of renovations. The staff though really nice and helpful. They even willing to store your luggage while you enjoy your movie time!
