Words that could adequately describe Newport Theatre: Ghetto, rundown, cheap, limited, and small…read more These words might be interpreted negatively, but know this: This was, at one point, my go-to theatre in all of Kowloon. Say what you will about HK's largest working class neighborhood, but this was where I could count on catching a flick without the guilt of paying more. On a surface level, Newport Theatre doesn't have much going for it. The place is tiny, with only two screens and rotating movies that are mainly western and local HK ones every week. From an interior perspective, it needs a gut renovation -- peeling wallpaper, raggedy seats, and subpar facilities. Concessions are also disappointing; much like the theatre's movie variety, it is limited. The fact it's situated in the heart of Mongkok would mean it's absurdly crowded on occasion, which it can be. Go during the school / work hours and the crowd is drastically less of an issue. To get a ticket is relatively easy, just head directly to the window in the front of the theatre where an agent (who likely will not be able to speak great English, so be forewarned) will help you choose assigned seating and available times for the movie showing that evening. Contrary to the look of it, they do accept credit cards (though cash is always recommended). The theatre itself is also small, but not enough to deter me. Screens are not fit for digital projection or IMAX worthy stuff, but it gets the job done. The same bodes for the sound, which is equally important as the picture quality. When the ticket prices range from $50-80 throughout the day, it's certainly not a terrible way to pass the time at all.

As the curtain unveils, more and more set up were shown, layering deeper and deeper into the stage, revealing the extremely deeeeeppp stage space of this theatre. I think the show would not be such a success if re-created in any other venues around Hong Kong that has the same audience capacity, but never the same size of stage space. The sightlines of the seats here are also very good, although it is not too steep, I can see perfectly eventhough the guy in front of me is tall and sitting up straight. Another thing impressive about the theatre is the main entrance, the glass structure is pretty magnificent, and it's like a gem glistening in the dark. What sets Kwai Tsing theater apart from the others will be the the black box theater. From the name you can tell it is a rectangular, almost cubical space allowing the performing parties to play with the space. Not only are the spectator stands are movable, the blankness of the wall enables the production teams to make complete use of the walls and incorporate them as a part of the stage. Many performers, especially for modern and contemporary pieces, black box is an ideal performing ground as the closeness between the performers and the audience is often the key element to the success of the piece. If you have not had such an experience, I would very much recommend you to go and feel it yourself. Despise the long travel on MTR all the way to Kwai Tsing, the theater is right opposite to the station, which makes it very accessible; several big malls are right next to the theater and would be your ideal place to have dinner before the show or late night snack after, equally as important to the performers. So other that going to the cinema for movies, this might as well be a very good place for you the nurture the inner artist within you.

It was once the best popular and prominent theatre for Chinese Operas. What Chinese Operas, you may ask? Yeah that's why it is in its decline because no one ever watched Chinese Operas anymore, excepts maybe whoever above 50yo. Occasionally you'll see these 50yo "fans" waiting at the backdoor of Sunbeam Theatre hoping to meet their Chinese Opera idols. No kidding. I was born and raised in the neighborhood and always wanted to watch a Chinese Opera here, but the last time I was here was for a drama, 南海十三郎. Funny enough, it was a drama about a famous Chinese Opera writer. The theatre was very roomy, I could imagine why it was best for operas. Nothing you could ever complain really, and you could definitely tell they had do their best to modernize + renovate the whole place in order to attract the younger crowd. It's always good to see the "Full House 全院滿座" cotton cloth banner hanging up at the front door. Because every time it is hung, Sunbeam Theatre is a little bit further away from the constant threat of closure.

I've actually showed up a few times without tickets hoping to get into a showing, and was able to get them without any problems (the seats weren't bad either!). The only issue is trying to get some sort of transportation home after a late showing--everyone will be competing for the same bus/taxi in the relatively quiet neighborhood.

But luckily, they showed most of the great ones. This is one of those old Hong Kong cinemas and is still keeping its way of seating. No computerised system. Cool ~ Due to these, I guess their pricing are one of the lowest, if not THE lowest. Usually they are charging $45/50 for 2D and $55/60 for 3D... Very very nice deal in my sense.

My only complaint about this theater is how the theaters are separated. They're split between the 6th, 8th and 10th floors of The One. I wish they were just all on one floor. Besides that, I would definitely recommend catching a flick here.

Although they are located in different floors, the theaters are all conveniently located next to the escalators. And for popular movies like Jurassic World, they have multiple theaters showing it, so I have options to watch it at 8:00pm, 8:30pm, 9:00pm, 9:40pm... so flexible that it sounds like you can just walk in and there will be seats available. For smaller theaters, there are a few more perks too. Even row E (fifth row) is never too close to the screen. Actually I'd even say row E was perfect. Less people getting in the theater late, too. The sound system was great. 3D effect was okay, as I was never a big fan of it anyway. But most surprisingly, the vibration effect on the seats (which only available every alternate row) was great. You can definitely feel the immersion when the dinosaurs making big steps on the ground (and it does simulate real-life experience too, right? when you have heavy vehicles passing by, you feel the vibration on the ground). Anyway, I'd definitely prefer to watch movies in smaller theaters now. IMAX is great, but doesn't worth the money nor the time fighting for the perfect timeslot and perfect seats.

This is also reflected in the ticket prices which are less expensive than the cinema's at IFC or Pacific Place. This MCL is in Telford Gardens. It may not the most modern cinema with the latest technology but the 6 houses are big enough, the chairs comfortable, with enough legroom. The convenience store offers enough variety, on a busy day there could be more staff.
