Cinemas are cinemas. At the end of the day, the multiplex places are much of a muchness, with most punters choosing their cinema for either convenience, it's near home or work - for a cheeky "business meeting" matinee, or what is playing. My current favourite (not the most convenient, but shows all the latest flicks), is the AMC Cinema in Pacific Place. What I particularly like about this venue is their consistency. All the theatres are about the same size, holding over 100 persons (only two are maxed out at 77 and 39), they have lovely wide plush seat, the rake of the theatre means you get a decent view from all seats, and the theatres are square (HK seems to have a lot of cinemas which are like runways, where the screen ends up the size of a postage stamp from half way up). There are six screens, which show lots of 3D movies, and a ripping sound system (but could do with being a louder, as I am getting deaf in my old age). Other facilities include the standard concessions stand, and a bar, which I have never used nor seen anyone use. The toilets are large and clean, and there is a small secret toilet by the bar (in case you need swift mid movie relief). This theatre is not as big as their sister in Festival Walk, so the movies often turn faster, and you won't have as many options, like seeing the 2D version. However, as well as the local and international blockbusters, this venue shows more of these "live" theatre shows that seem to occur in a few HK cinemas. Unlike the Palace in IFC, the AMC in Pacific Place only shows a handful across the weekend. Movies come out on Thursday, and there are discounts on Tuesdays and before noon.

Bored while walking in the IFC Mall, my friend asked me if I have ever watched a movie here at…read morePalace before. I said no. And the next thing you know, we are buying tickets to see Ralph Breaks the Internet (WTF?) lol. IFC is a high-end shopping mall in Central, Hong Kong, so this cinema would not be anything less impressive. The tickets were $120 each, it is more expensive than other cinemas in Hong Kong. There is a full wine bar inside the lounging area. The washroom is nice and clean. There is a concession stand selling popular Asian snacks (squid balls, boneless wings, etc.) The best was the sweet caramel popcorn, I can easily eat a large lol. The only con at Palace was the size of the 'big screen', it is quite small. Nonetheless, the leather reclining seats were very comfortable. We picked seats for the very back row in House 1, and there was plenty leg room. It was like sitting on the back row but with the leg room of front row seats ;) Travel notes: You can easily get to IFC Mall via MTR Hong Kong Station

This is really a 3.5 but there aren't a lot of choices for theaters in the Central area…read more What I like: -Central location in IFC mall -Nice bathrooms -Seats are leather What I don't like: -Expensive AF. Not sure if it's Hollywood + being in the center of HK, but $300HK for 2 people to see The Justice League? Ouch, my wallet -Theater is small so if there's a popular release, it'll be hard to get tickets -Sometimes I feel they only show action films in 3D, making it more expensive. As they also charge for 3D glasses, it's best to bring your own (or keep the ones you bought from them for next time.) Other notes: -If you want a unique, non-western movie snack, they offer cuttlefish balls. -There's also a small bar here, but not sure if you can bring your drink into the theater.

This was my first Hong Kong movie theater experience in 15 years, and it honestly exceeded my…read moreexpectations. At the time, The Lady Improper just premiered and I was dying to see it in theaters. I chose this place because actress Charlene Choi (Ah Sa) was going to pay moviegoers a visit at the end of the film, which I found out through the film's Facebook page. You bet I was going to fulfill my childhood dream of meeting (half of) Twins!! But I was worried the seats would fill up, so I went all the way to Causeway Bay and purchased the ticket in person a few days prior. I tried buying it online but I ran into some technical difficulties. To be frank, I also had trouble finding the place because Google Maps likes to make a fool out of me On the day of the movie, I arrived ahead of time but there were already a lot of people (possibly diehard fans) waiting to be let into the theater. I made my way over to the concession stand and oh my lord, the menu almost brought me to tears. Curry fish balls. Siu mai. I would've ordered all of those if I had more hands and more stomachs. I didn't so I just settled for the good ol' popcorn. The seats inside the theater were so spacious. And the cup holders near the bottom of the seat? Pure genius. Now, I don't know if all theaters in HK are like this but I'd definitely make more of an effort to go to another one when I'm back in HK.

It's a "cinematheque", not just a cinema. Well but I will just keep calling it a cinema for now…read more. I remember when I was young (wayyyy too young), this cinema opened and offered membership to all movie lovers, for a very small annual fee. I got the membership thanks to my dad, and naturally this was the place I went to, when I ever asked a girl out for a movie first time in my life (it was Miyazaki's Whisper of the Heart, or 耳をすませば / 夢幻街少女, in 1995). But it's more than just memory. The cinema is conveniently located in Yau Ma Tai, but also quite interestingly hidden inside an estate, like it is never intended for general public. It has since become my go-to place for non-mainstream movies, whether it is local or foreign. I still remember a lot of movies I watched here quite specifically. Breathless is one of them, Paris, je t'aime was another one. I must admit that, to many of your eyes, they are still pretty mainstream. And for the other half of you, you may on the other hand think I'm pretty pretentious or being pseudo-intellectual. Don't get my wrong, I like Hollywood movies as much as the guy next to me, but once a while you want to see some movies that "break the formula", and in Cinematheque Broadway you can find them available, all year round.

Watching a movie here is guaranteed to make you feel hipster and cool. Hidden in a housing estate,…read morethis theater is often the only place in Hong Kong to watch indie films. On the ground floor of the theater, there is a CD shop, cafe, and bookstore. Although not the newest theater or the one with the fanciest seats, it's definitely comfortable and still a pleasure to catch a film here.
