My Brother sewing machine was gathering dust in the corner of my bedroom, so I was excited to see the Sewing Studio's LivingSocial deal for four beginner's classes. Just the excuse I needed to break out my machine and expend some crafty energy.
I went in for my first class last Saturday - an apron-making class. About a week before the class, Kathy, the teacher, sent out a reminder email with directions and supplies lists.
I drove around the block a few times before finding the old factory-style building tucked between all of the car dealerships on Peachtree Blvd.
You know you're in for a warm and friendly experience when a sweet puppy named Capone greets you at the door with a wagging tail. Kathy was patient and knowledgeable. She walked us through the steps of the project without bogging us down with too many details, and did a fantastic job of fielding our questions as we moved through each step. She made a point of teaching each student about her machine (no chicos attended this particular class...what dude doesn't want a cute apron?!) and she cheerfully helped us when we got caught up on the most mundane and tedious steps.
Halfway through the class I realized that I had purchased single fold bias tape instead of the double fold which was needed for the project, but she had all of the supplies for sale on site. She had all of the basic sewing supplies (fabric, scissors, pin cushions, needles, etc.), as well, which was extremely helpful for those who were unable to get to the store before class.
I was so pleased with the outcome of my first project! The stitching was wonky in a few places, but I felt very accomplished. In fact, I went out the next day and purchased more fabric to make one on my own.
I'm so grateful to Kathy and the Sewing Studio for helping me get acquainted with my sewing machine! I think that this will be a worthwhile friendship. I'm looking forward to my next class in a few weeks! read more
