The menu, pictures (and Yelp reviews!) looked great so I booked on-line for the 2.30 lunch slot giving us plenty of time to enjoy our morning. Unfortunately, we were ten minutes late due to traffic, and when we arrived we were told that we would have to order quickly as the kitchen shuts at three. We were rapidly seated and lingered over while we perused the menu. We started with a glass of Prosecco each and I hastily went for the pork belly and my partner went for the celeriac risotto. We didn't order starters, and I didn't really get chance to have a proper look at this part of the menu. While the children's menu is substantial, it is definitely aimed at the older ones and there wasn't really anything suitable for my 15 month old. This wasn't a problem as we knew he could share ours, plus we had brought reserves! The food came quickly and was very tasty, I couldn't fault either dish but before I had even finished mine, the waitress came round with dessert menus saying that we would have to order straight away if we wanted one. I think this is the first time that I have been made to order dessert before I have finished my main! My rhubarb and ginger cake was good but my partner was a little disappointed with his cheesecake. We ordered tea and coffee to finish and were finally able to relax. Although I can't complain about the food or the friendliness of the staff, the fact that we were rushed so much from the minute we walked in put a dampener on the experience for me. If you are not prepared to serve dinner in an unhurried fashion, don't take a booking at that time. Yes, we were 10 minutes late which was entirely our fault, but we could have also ordered starters delaying the whole process even further.

Helen (the English landlady) is excellent at what she does. Her Greek husband, Michael, prepares really good food. On Thursday nights they always have fresh fish, and the haddock and chips is consistently good and among the best I have ever eaten. It's best to phone for a table reservation on Thursday, Friday or Saturday evenings and/or for Sunday lunch.

The consolation prize was the wine, which was a fine Pinot Noir, and almost not ordered after we'd read the menu description of it as "trendy". The management here really should be ashamed of the quality of their food, even though the otherwise helpful waiter offered the comment, on being shown our uneaten revolting "individual" mass produced lemon meringue pie (£5), "I blame the chef".

An awful pub which could and should be so much more…read more Gone are the days, it would seem, when Sevenoaks was an idyllic countryside town. Now slave to the ever growing commuter belt the Chequers Inn would seem to be yet another victim to the fatigue of the chain pub. I am very biased in my review but only because I had one of the most singely bad experiences ever in this very pub. My girlfriend and I partook in a meal after a day walking through the scenic Knowle Park. It's a nice walk that I've been doing since I was a boy and a place to which I still like to return. The meal was awful. One of the abysmal plates was a terrible tuna steak, undercooked and comlpete with a giant piece of scale hanging from its side. Under time constraints we decided to make do and quickly worked through the meal chalking it up to bad experience not counting on the food poisoning it would evidentally later evoke. This was however not the crowning glory of our sour experience. I was standing to leave (and I may be tall before you read on but I certainly do not touch the ceiling) the next thing I know I'm covered in white dust and my hand is bleeding. Part of the ceiling had literally fallen, bounced off my shoulder (luckily I was standing lest it would've clouted me directly on the head) and clipped my hand on the way down. Minimal care from the staff was taken to make sure either of us was fine. At this point I was quite bewildered still not quite sure why my hair was covered in plaster and why my hand was cut. Other people around us seemed more clued on and were demanding free drinks and such the like for us. Just wanting to get out of there we promptly left and latterly I wrote a letter of complaint My meal was refunded and a free meal was also offeredwhich I think understandably I chose not to claim. All in all a very lame experience indeed. From start to finish a poor show on the side of the staff and a poor meal to boot. Steer far clear of this one if possible.

This place is ancient - really old - & feels like a decent country pub. They've got a lovely open fire too. What with this and the Black Boy I'm starting to enjoy going out in Sevenoaks. Horrors!!!!!
