Rich, comforting, and full of flavour, with the sage oil adding a beautiful depth and the charred bread finishing it perfectly. The pub has a welcoming atmosphere with genuinely friendly service. A special mention to the darling pup who completely made my night. It was my first day away from my own dog, and that little moment honestly meant more than you know my girl does this to me too (see video). Loved it here, it's a place that feels warm in every sense. I would absolutely recommend and will be back.

It's like Madonna speaking in a British accent for no good reason. Predictable, right? Well, outside of the ornate gate to Greenwich Park was this restaurant with a pub facade. Jamie W. and I were feeling peckish after going through the major sights in Greenwich. We knew we felt a kinship with this spot when we discovered it was formerly a gay bar called the Gloucester Arms, and it recently received a rainbow plaque for being a significant LGBTQ+ landmark. Now that's serious cred. Even more impactful to us was their cocktail list. Jamie ordered the £13 Basil Smash, a gin & tonic enhanced by Bombay Sapphire, basil, lemon, and a gum syrup called gomme. I went for the £13 Mango Colada with mango purée to go with the pineapple rum, coconut syrup, shredded coconut, and double cream (photo: https://yelp.to/KopCiLLoRm). We were in a relaxed mood when our food arrived. Jamie scored big with the £19 Fish & Chips, genuinely delicious with a big piece of beer-battered haddock and hand-cut chips (photo: https://yelp.to/3HASSSP2uc). I went with the more modest £17 Sausage & Mash with kale, fried onions, and a lot of mashed potatoes and watery gravy (photo: https://yelp.to/IfJVcHj0lB). It was quite a satisfying experience at Greenwich Tavern because they turned standard British favorites into tastier versions that appeal to the rest of us. Plus cocktails always help. Claims to Fame aside, the Compasses is a lovely pub in a lovely location. Situated just off of the old high street, it is certainly worth the short steep clamber up the cobbled hill, even when I have chosen to break out the heels! It is my choice of pub at this end of town, and in my girly opinion officially kicks Cassidy's butt whenever there is some important sporting event being shown. There is a large screen in the front bar for those interested in said sporting event, and plenty of seating and a billiards table in the back room for those disinterested. My one negative, it isn't the best pub if on a rare sunny day you are looking to enjoy a drink outside. There are a few benches out the front and the street barely has any traffic, but I'm partial to a pretty garden. The Compasses offers a wide choice of beers and ales, which is excellent for those looking for something more than the usual piss poor lagers. It maintains a traditional and cosy feel, whilst still having the space for larger groups to socialise, perfect!
