    The Secret Chocolatier on Providence
    Bruce K.

I had forgotten that the Secret Chocolatier folks had another location on Providence, so when I had an urgent need for a gift, I blasted my way directly to them. And it was a hit. First off, they're super friendly and more than happy to help customize what you're looking for. I got a simple box of 9 truffles, nicely wrapped in a bow. Perfect. As well, a small bag of chocolate bark for my lovely wife. Second, the prices were Great stuff that was much appreciated. Is it wrong to give chocolate to your dentist?

This is a cute little shop located in a busy Cotswold shopping center. There is a lot of parking around and even a parking garage for when the area gets packed. It is usually busiest around lunchtime. They have some very cool and different options to try. A lot of their chocolate is dark. I wish they would have some more milk varieties to try, since it's my favorite. I tried the peanut butter cloud? I think it's called. It had an awesome outside design with pretty colors. It was dark chocolate, marshmallow, and peanut butter-delicious. I really liked it. The staff is nice, knowledgeable, and engaged in good conversation.

Beautifully made chocolates. Ingredients have to be of high quality. When you check in on Yelp you can get one free confection. We chose the bananas foster and it was great. The chocolate hits your palette with a sweet kick and the inside surprises you with a tart rum and banana flavor. Prices are higher but its understandable because these chocolates are handmade with quality in mind.

I had a taste for some really good chocolate. Since I was in the area, I stopped hoping not to find anything that looked good. That was not going to happen! I settled on my favorite, Dark Chocolate Almond Bark and was content to leave the store. Then they offered a sample of their award-winning Chocolate Seasalt Butter Toffee! Well, now, needless to say, I have two favorite chocolates. The Toffee is soooooooooo good! I am glad I was offered some as I shrugged my nose up about toffee. Never again. You cannot go wrong with a visit here. If you lack self-control, bring $15 and you won't hurt yourself! That is a secret tip!

The person who gave me these truffles and dark chocolate sea salt caramels gets a gold star.

WHAM! As soon as you walk through the door, you'll get hit with the scent of chocolate. It envelops you and makes you salivate. This isn't like the sterile smell of walking into waxy Godiva at the mall. This is an all-encompassing chocolate experience-- enhanced by an owner who clearly has a passion for the stuff. In the first 5 minutes, I learned the Hawaii is the only state in the US to grow chocolate (or what is it, cocoa beans?), flavors permeate fats like oils and cream, and their truffles contain no stabilizers. Fascinating! On this particular evening, I was looking for cake in a jar for gifts-- but because of the busy holiday season, the shop had run out. No fear, I picked out a few truffles/caramels (including coconut and ginger). The truffles never made it home. The ginger was nicely flavored and truly melted as soon as you put it on your tongue. The truffles aren't as big as the typical large 50-cent vending machine gumball size-- more like in-between the small and large gumball size. But that's all you need. They're rich and yummy. You won't find an enormous selection, but if you ask about any product, the owner will know everything about it. (The mini packaged chocolate squares I bought? Created by some ivy league braniacs who turned their skills into chocolate making!) It makes you feel good about buying local. PS: I was told the truffle flavors rotate a few times a year, and are oftentimes chosen/selected from customer feedback. (Basil? Did I hear you say basil? I want one! How about rosemary or passion fruit poppy seed?)

Hi everyone! Is everything made in house here?

We we're giving samples of delicious truffles as well as purchased delicious chocolate chip cookies, brownies, and chocolate bars. Recently I visited the shop and was popular surprise that they were offering shop made ice cream. Although brownies are not currently on the menu until next month I was able to purchase their vanilla based ice cream that was full of brownie pieces and dark chocolate. I have nothing but good things to say about chocolatier Blair Potts and his friendly wife Margo. Because this is a chocolatier shop and everything is made from scratch, of course the costs are not the same as your average candy store or supermarket. Everything I've ever purchased from that shop was absolutely amazing and worth every penny.

I'm writing this review because we recently learned that a gift certificate we gifted as a holiday present expired. I wasn't aware it had a time limit, if I had know I would've thought twice about gifting from this establishment. It's embarrassing for us to give a gift that was ultimately unusable. No greeting, the lady behind the counter just walked up and started pulling desserts out as we were talking amongst ourselves and trying to decide on them, so felt a little rushed. Also, I guess they save the good boxed packaging for customers they like, so if you are offered styrofoam then that means you didn't make the list lol. The way we were stared at the entire time and rudely handed the receipt to sign after our purchase made the entire visit an uncomfortable vibe and as if we were being a bother. And just for future reference, yes please offer your customers a bag to carry multiple items they purchased, thanks. If you decide to stop in though, the white chocolate mousse was pretty tasty lol (that's what the one star is for, otherwise, it would be a zero for me).

They had offered samples of their lemon tart at the event, which stayed on my mind--so I came back and ordered the Lorraine-style quiche. It was rich, flavorful, and perfectly balanced by a fresh side salad. I paired it with a café au lait, which was equally well done. The ambiance is effortlessly chic--very much reminiscent of a European café--and it was lively during lunch. It's the kind of place where you can sit, linger, and people-watch... and SouthPark definitely showed up in style. At one point, several guests seated near us were speaking French, which added to the authenticity and overall experience. Service was warm and efficient, even with the crowd. The bakery itself is on the smaller side--you order inside and then head outside to sit and eat. I went on a Sunday, so it was very busy with a long line, but it moved quickly. When seating fills up, the neighboring restaurant allows use of their patio, which is a thoughtful touch. My friend enjoyed her quiche as well, and we both agreed it's a spot worth returning to--whether for a casual lunch, coffee, or a pastry break. I also order a few macarons to go and my family enjoyed them.

Review for Renaissance Patisserie…read more After relocating to Charlotte from San Francisco, one of the first things I searched for was a proper kouign-amann (pronounced queen-ah-mahn). It's a staple where I'm from, and when I discovered that Renaissance Patisserie carried it, I made the drive immediately. I'm happy to say--this place is the real deal. The kouign-amann here reminded me of the ones back in San Francisco. It wasn't quite as buttery or rich as some of the West Coast versions, but it was absolutely enjoyable--and most importantly, I finished every bite. That alone says a lot. Location & setting: Renaissance is tucked into the upscale specialty shops of SouthPark, in a lovely, polished shopping center surrounded by quality retailers like Williams Sonoma and several restaurants. Parking is plentiful and convenient, and once you step out of your car, you're welcomed into a charming outdoor courtyard that feels relaxed and refined. You'll immediately notice the bright yellow awning--it's cheerful and inviting--and inside, the bakery is just as charming. The black-and-white tile floors, small bistro tables, and beautifully arranged pastry case create a classic European feel. It's not a huge space--maybe six or seven tables--but it feels cozy, elegant, and thoughtfully designed. What makes it special: * A stunning pastry case filled with beautifully crafted desserts and laminated pastries * Skilled bakers and decorators--you can tell there's real craftsmanship behind the products * Friendly, efficient service * Apple Pay accepted (always appreciated) * Self-service water and condiments station * Clean, comfortable environment * A lovely outdoor patio that's perfect when the weather cooperates I do wish they occasionally experimented with more creative variations of the kouign-amann--perhaps seasonal fruit or specialty flavors--but even in its classic form, it's consistently a hit. I've brought these pastries to friends and gatherings, and they're always well received. What I appreciate most is that Renaissance delivers on quality and consistency. It may be a newer trend here in Charlotte, but these pastries have been a long-standing favorite in cities like San Francisco, and it's wonderful to see that level of craftsmanship available locally. Bottom line: Beautiful pastries, fair prices, great service, and a polished, welcoming atmosphere. This has become my go-to bakery in Charlotte, and if you appreciate well-made French pastries, you will not be disappointed.
