Orange creamsicle. Kiddie portion. Healthy portion and plenty filling for an adult, too.

Scoop Shack vs Mad Martha. Honestly, put a blindfold on and I think it's tough to tell the difference. Locals might have a fit over this opinion, but both places are reliable and fit the bill for great homemade ice cream. The flavors will differ, and with SS you get the spoon that changes colors, but hey, you can't go wrong with either venue. With SS, the kiddie portion is plenty (see pic), so if your are looking for a modest portion, just go with that size.

The Scoop Shack is a creamery that opened in Edgartown, Massachusetts in 2010. It was founded by chef and restaurateur Bryan MacPhail, who also owns Slice of Edgartown Pizzeria and MacPhail's Corner Cafe. MacPhail was trained at the prestigious French Culinary Institute in Manhattan. After earning a good reputation for himself for creating delicious seafood specialties, MacPhail decided to take a shot at ice cream. The small batch ice cream is made fresh in house on a daily basis. They have over 20 different flavors to choose from on any given day. In addition to their regular selection of ice cream, the Scoop Shack also offers frozen yogurt and a large variety of old-fashioned candies. A second location was later launched at the Inn at Old Harbor on Block Island. My family and I visited the Scoop Shack recently when we were on a week-long vacation in Cape Cod. We had taken the ferry over to Martha's Vineyard and were having a day trip. While exploring Edgartown, my wife spotted the ice cream parlor. When she looked in the window, one flavor in particular immediately caught her attention: Butter Beer! My wife is a huge Harry Potter fan and had to try the ice cream! We both ordered cups of Butter Beer, as well as a cup of Vanilla for our son. The ice cream was amazing!!! So much flavor in every bite! We tried some of our son's vanilla too, and it was some of the best vanilla ice cream we ever tasted. We realize that Cape Cod and the Islands are well-known for great ice cream parlors, but the Scoop Shack sets the bar very high. We'll definitely be back!

During our day trip to Martha's Vineyard, we looked for an ice cream shop in Edgartown. They had a few to choose from, and we tried Scoop Shack. They had more than just ice creams, but candies, toys, and other souvenirs. It was a nice size shop, but didn't offer any table or chair, which was a bummer. They had a cute posters on the wall that said "Frozen Green Tea with mint and Honey" and "Frozen Root Beer." But when I asked about those flavors, the staff told us they don't make them any more... So, don't trust the flavors on the side wall... The very colorful menu on the center wall is current, and unless they sold out of some flavors, they are the ones that they actually offer. We got Brown Sugar Banana flavor and Butterbeer flavor ice creams. Banana one was so creamy, almost mushy than creamy, like mashed banana. I really liked it! Butterbeer one was not quite like the ones from The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Universal Studios. This one here had similar flavor to Root Beer, but much more tasty. The staffs were not overly friendly but nice enough. We enjoyed their ice cream, and we were lucky enough to find a bench nearby. Great spot for a very flavorful ice cream!

Edgartown has plenty of ice cream shop options, but this place stood out. They had many flavors. Of course, they have the most popular ones, but they also have original ones. I loved their lemon lavender. and Butter pecan. They let you taste before you buy and the workers are friendly and patient. Best of all, they are open late so you can get your after dinner sugar fix. They don't have a designated parking lot, but there's a parking lot a short walk away.

Lured in by the delicious smell, I was greeted by the cutest ice cream shop and friendliest employees. Although the line was long the girls moved it along fast. I ordered the half and half (cookie dough and fudge brownie), and as you can tell from the photo couldn't wait until after I took a photo to take a bite. So good!!! The kids scoop was more than enough to leave me satisfied, but I could have easily eaten a triple scoop. Definitely go here!

Eco-friendly spoons. Nuff said. Seriously, the flavors are awesome (Lemon Lavender) and the Sea Salt Caramel Truffle my wife had. Ate it at the harbor looking at the boats. Cool vibe, nice old-timey candy available as well. 25 cent taffy too. Definitely less "known" than Mad Martha's in Edgartown but it's legit.

One of their special flavors: mint green tea with honey and ginger snaps

We didn't realize there was an inside line and legitimately waited for like an hour and a half outside. We watched so many people come way after us and leave much before us. However, we were too committed to leave. The service was great and they had ample seating at picnic tables around. For us the ice cream wasn't worth the wait but it was still great ice cream. They definitely cater to all folks (dairy free options, vegan options, sherbet, sorbet, etc.) We both got mini splits which was a fun option and delicious but we are just as content at places with a much shorter wait. I would also recommend walking if possible because parking looked to be an absolute disaster. They even had people attempting to direct traffic and parking.

I now live on an island - and you bet that when I went off-island last week I requested that my dad stop here on the way home from Hyannis. My dad had to say yes; having worked in the ice cream industry in his youth, he knows a good cone when he sees one and Somerset Creamery tops his list as well. Embarrassingly, we got there 10 minutes before they opened. We camped in the parking lot. When it was time to go in, I already knew what I was getting. Chocolate mint ice cream in a waffle cone. First of all, it is the best ice cream flavor ever created. Chocolate and mint ice cream with Oreo cookie pieces. What else could you ask for?? And then their waffle cones and made fresh and they are oh so good. The service is always great, and they now take credit cards!! I cannot recommend this place enough. The only downside is that they do not have any dedicated seating, inside or outside. There are some planters of sorts that you can sit down on. Once I sat on one for three hours for a first date - can't say I recommend that. But if you want good ice cream, come here! (Yes, it is better than the Barn in my opinion).

OK, confirmed. This *IS* our favorite ice cream place in America. We literally planned our…read morenortheast trip itinerary to include The Ice Cream Barn in it, and we are so glad we did. This place is pure magic. We came the day after Thanksgiving, when it was freezing, around lunch, and we were not alone. We were excited to see more of their fall/winter flavors, and one of us went with their "Charles Dickens" (essentially like a fruit cake, but tastes so much better than it sounds!) and their pumpkin oreo, which wasn't her favorite but it was still very good. Love the Thanksgiving sprinkles option! (The only issue is that if the ice cream is really hard, and if it's really packed into the cup, then the sprinkles go everywhere.) Our daughter got the chocolate oreo brownie in one of their freshly-made waffle cones, and she shockingly ate almost the whole thing. SO good! There was also a banana peanut butter cup order along with peanut butter heath bar. What can we say other than what we said before?--everything is creeeeammmmmy and tastes so....clean and wonderful. It's the odd hallucination of feeling like the ice cream you're eating is healthy! We also want to shout out the staff who are beyond patient. We were those annoying people who sampled a few options (one of us even mid-ordering, so embarrassing!) and the young lady working was still friendly and hospitable. Does the ice cream make them so sweet or does this place just attract the best people? It's probably reciprocal! Anyway, we will always be sure to come back here anytime that we are in the area. You have to eat in your car in the winter months because it's too cold to be outside (no indoor seating), and we noticed that there were two cars next to us on either side with single drivers with out-of-state plates (like us) happily munching away on their goodies. That's how good this place is--five enthusiastic stars again!
