Our coffees were delicious, the view/vibe was beautiful and relaxing and the price was fair. However they were extremely busy/maybe understaffed and it took over 30 mins for our 2 cold coffees. We had a dog with us, and were about to get in the road to head home so it was a bummer it was such a long wait. But if you have the time this is such a cute place! What a gem! The Sandbar in Ashland is an absolute delight. Nestled right by the lake, it offers a gorgeous view that pairs perfectly with your coffee or cocktail. We visited on a sunny day and took full advantage of their amazing outdoor seating--it's the kind of spot you could easily spend hours at. The ambiance is warm and inviting, whether you're stopping in for a morning coffee, grabbing lunch, or winding down with a drink in the evening. It's rare to find a place that nails all three, but The Sandbar truly does. We started with their specialty drink (highly recommend--it was delicious) and a spinach and cheese pastry that was flavorful and fresh. I also tried their Old Fashioned, and it was well-balanced and smooth. For food, we went with the YORK sandwich--Italian salami, turkey, and ham--and it was packed with flavor. We also tried a focaccia sandwich with a sausage on the side, and both were excellent. From the friendly service to the quality of food and drinks, we loved everything about this place. We stayed in the hotel upstairs and upon checkout we worked from Sandbar for a few hours before heading out. The location is great as it had a great view of the lake and you can sit inside or outside, enjoying the scenery. Unfortunately, the day we were here, their fridge had broken overnight so they didn't have the ingredients to make half of their food items. Because of the crisis, additional employees were called in to help out but with the additional people there, it seemed kind of disjointed/chaotic. However, employees were very nice and dealt with unhappy customers kindly and with respect even though they were stressed. Chairs and tables could be cleaned more frequently as the bench and table we were sitting at had muffin crumbs everywhere including on the seat. We ordered some sandwiches for lunch and for the size of the sandwiches, it was a little pricey. While things out of their control happened, they dealt with it in a professional manner and I would come back for the hospitality and view. read more

A must stop if you are in Ashland! The service was fast and the ambiance was great- you have lake front views as you sip your drinks! They have a great patio with a fire pit, cute mugs to purchase, and nice clean bathrooms in the building! No offensive flags flying here either:) the pistachio/hazelnut latte was delicious, heavy on the hazelnut, but a solid 8.5/10. The maple cold brew with maple cold foam was delicious, subtly sweet, smooth, just perfect! 10/10 for sure! The specialty lemonade with blueberry was a very nice drink for my non coffee drinker who rated it an 9/10 (I'd give it a 9.5/10!). Absolutely wonderful experience! Stopped in on our way back to WV. The staff was kind, helpful and cheerful. The food was absolutely delicious. The view was beautiful and relaxing. It's such a bittersweet thing finding little gems like this during our travels. It's wonderful to experience, but a bit sad knowing you may never get a second stop. I stopped here on a whim and am so glad I did! The staff were great and assuaged my hesitations about the artisanal water spout out front. They were also able to modify a menu item (which I am very sorry to have forgotten the name of, but I believe it's the first sandwich, or whichever one has cheese, apples, ham, and truffle honey on it) to fit my diet (subbing spinach for the ham) and it was delicious! The location and atmosphere are great. It's right on Lake Superior and with large windows you can stare outside as you eat. There is also outdoor seating. This restaurant is attached to the hotel Blue Wave Inn. I had the fish tacos and they were just OK. The citrus slaw and pickled onions competed with each other, in my opinion. We just had a fantastic breakfast at the Sandbar. The staff was friendly and attentive and the food was delicious. We had the breakfast burritos- fresh and sooo good. Our boys had the French toast which was also very good. Creative to have apple Slices with Carmel to dip in. The view was also incredible. Highly recommend this restaurant! read more

So very much enjoyed staying at The Blue Wave Inn (part of the Sandbar) and eating some delicious meals while in Ashland this past Summer. My significant other is from the area and suggested this place. Spacious rooms with incredible views of Lake Superior. Loved the proximity of the restaurant, which is just downstairs. We stayed in and just ordered while staring out at the islands. Notably smoked Whitefish with wild rice. YUM! Ideal place to stay if you're visiting. I'm definitely a fan and will return. read more

I was so very disappointed in the service today. We waited for 45 minutes and then asked about our order. It had not even been started. 3 other people waited for service and simply walked out without ordering. We decided to leave without getting our food and went to another restaurant. The staff was so disorganized, it was just almost comical. Obviously the management is clueless. Considering the view, which is beautiful, this restaurant should be able to make a tourist trip memorable. This is prime real estate on Lake Superior. Initially our group was attempting to dine at the restaurant that previously inhabited this location-- it had been in a write up about Ashland's farm to table best restaurants. Unfortunately when we arrived we were greeted with the Sandbar, a poor imitation that falls far short of its predecessors reputation. The best way I can describe the short comings of this restaurant is by simply comparing the dining experience to that of the game of roulette. When you pick something off the menu it's a gamble as to whether or not it will be available for purchase. From the beer menu to sides and main courses our group was told time and time again that our selections were actually out of stock. The food itself, when one narrowed down the selection to that which was available, was good but not great-- definitely room for improvement. Our server was very polite and genuinely nice but had to continuously check back with the kitchen to see what was available and had the unfortunate job of coming back to the table 15 min after our order to let us know that there actually wasn't enough of a some dishes to fulfill our order. Overall it seems like there is a systemic problem re management that burdens a kind serving staff with the undesirable job of having to deal with continuous shortages and time delays. On a positive side note the view at this restaurant is simply unparalleled in the area and if you are looking for a great Milwaukee coffee company you are in luck because the Sandbar stocks one of the best selections. Additionally, they have an amazing camping supply store attached to the restaurant that has a great selection of lightweight trekking items that are perfect if you are doing some last minute shopping before a trip to the apostle islands. So, if you are looking for a place that will probably have some decent food and a good view, the Sandbar is a potential option--as long as keep in mind that you're taking a real gamble with your experience re the unknown number of shortages in menu items. read more

Absolutely fantastic! Stopped here for lunch on our way to Bayfield. Short but tasty selection of sandwiches, wraps and salads. Fresh artesian water well out front and beer on tap inside. A couple tables inside, a number of picnic tables on the patio and additional chairs to take in the view outside. Also have soft serve ice cream and a coffee bar. Super friendly service :) read more

Very poor experience. I came here for lunch with my parents while visiting town. It clearly has the nicest piece of lakeshore real estate in northern Wisconsin and the views are amazing so I assumed that it would be a great experience. When we got there the place was maybe 20% full. After 10 minutes of sitting there the waiter never came and took our order or talked to us so I decided to walk up to the counter and order there. After another 10 minutes of sitting there I had to pester the waiter to bring my daughter her chocolate milk who at this point became irritable with the wait. After about 45 minutes total of waiting there we went and asked the staff where our food was and how long it was going to be. They didn't know what we had or where the food was in line. It eventually became clear that they hadn't even started our order, again after 45 minutes of sitting there. My daughter was whining for food at this point so instead of continuing to sit here we asked for our money back and decided to go to the Deep Water. Now take note, within our last 10 minutes of sitting there, there were 4 tables total including us that got up and walked out due to not being attended on. There were two other tables asking the staff about where there food was. The core problem here is the incompetence with a staff who doesn't know how to operate a restaurant. It's so tragic that this place has such an epic resource of location and environment and can't seem to get their act together to run the place. Instead, this place is HEMORRHAGING money for the owner. With the amount of money that walked out of this place within 10 minutes, this place will surely fail within a year. If my own employees demonstrated this level of incompetence I would reprimand them and give them one opportunity to correct themselves. If they continued demonstrate such money-losing-incompetence, I would fire them and hire a new manager who knows how to appropriately staff and train employees. read more

Ive came here a few times in the past and have always had a great experience. Between the view, friendly staff, and my favorite breakfast burrito in town. I went there for breakfast this morning and it was a completely different atmosphere as soon as you walked in the door. Most of the waitstaff was unpresentable and did not seem like the type of people that should be in customer service. My breakfast burrito was not nearly as good as it once was. It was half the size and lacked the flavor it once had. I'm not sure what has happened with the management of this place, but I know for sure I won't be coming back. We live in Ashland and this is the 2nd time we've been here since the new manager took over. The 1st time was poor but this time it has only become worse. The service is none existent. The place was only 1/4 full when we arrived. During the 45 minutes after we arrive no one received their food. The people who had ordered before us got up and asked about their order and the 3 young people didn't know anything about it. Accordingly, we went up and asked about our order. It had not been started and the staff didn't know anything about it. Accordingly we demanded our money back and left.
