While driving up to my cabin in Fish Camp from Ventura county, my oil pressure light illuminated. I called the Rusty Piston after hours, and left a message saying I would like to drop the vehicle off. The next morning I received a call from their office saying I could drop it off, but they couldn't get to it for a few days. I had the car towed to their office. I was planning on renting a car to drive back to Ventura. They said that they could take a quick look and if it was a easy fix that they could get to it, saving to have to rent a car. It ended up being a pressure switch which they were able to fix within a couple of hours. Lovely staff, great communication, cool shop, a true small town gem!!! After over 2 years of struggling to find out why my truck wasn't able to pass smog and an even worse experience over the course of 2 months in a different shop in Oakhurst where the only changed 1 air filter, I brought my truck to Don here at the Rusty Piston. Don hadn't even taken me as a client yet and as he popped the hood to take a look at what we were dealing with, within 5 seconds he found a component of my air intake that wasn't even plugged back in right by the other shop that had it for 2 months. In a week, Don had the job done, my truck was able to pass smog, and I haven't had any issues with the work at all. If you want something done, and done right, take it to Don. read more

I was jacked up by this shop- the old "tourist in a bind" situation: My car needed an emergency repair while I was vacationing in Oakhurst. I checked the Yelp reviews of repair shops in Oakhurst and The Rusty Piston is top rated. So, we took it there for diagnosis and repair. The car was left in their shop for two full days for the repair they said it needed. The job was a common, straightforward, routine procedure. I just checked with my local dealer and a also another top-rated repair shop here in (expensive) Marin where I live and learned that I was overcharged around 60% ($600+) by this shop in Oakhurst which even charged an extra fee for putting the bill on my credit card, versus check or cash. Furthermore, the car still exhibits much of the very same condition that they "diagnosed" and charged me to "repair". I'm back home now, I'll take it to the dealer and have them finish the job properly. read more

Couldn't leave well enough alone. Came with an urgent issue and though they said they were open, nobody would help us. Had to go across the street where they were more than happy to give us assistance in a friendly and speedy manner. It was that easy. Excellent diagnostics and troubleshooting. I should step back and preface with Rob squeezing both of our vehicles into a packed schedule. We lost our previous go-to auto shop in the area due to covid and the 2nd shop we tried couldn't fit us in for two more weeks. It was pretty important to us that Rob was able to save us a good amount of money on our repairs. Due to this being a "bloom year" the rodents are on a rampage against our vehicles. These people are soooo nice! They helped us on their day off. Our check engine lights came on while in Oakhurst on a Saturday and we pulled onto a side street. Searched YELP and every auto repair shop was closed (it being Covid times and Sat). I looked up to see The Rusty Piston right behind us, with people coming out the door. It was the owners, who were on their way to the lake for some R&R. I explained our plight and they came over with their computer testing device, plugged into our car, and it turned out to just be a low tire. But they saved us from having to tow the vehicle 35 miles to get that checked. We will be loyal customers from this day forward!!! read more

They are over priced for the work they do. Been there twice, first time to get a programmer removed from my truck. They left wires open that they just cut, no attempt to do a professional job and remove any wires or seal the ends. now my remote start won't work. Second time tried to say the front end needed rebuilt and injectors where bad. Along with leaving my air filter disconnected transmission fluid was low after they did a flush and way over tightened the new fuel filter which they charged me $90 for a $30 part. Not to mention the quotes they gave me for the so called work that needed to be done was ridiculous. Save your money and go some where that's professional and has experienced employees who care. read more
