i ordered a Caesar's salad, no meat, as i am vegetarian. It was $8 and had lettuce that was mostly "white" not much green, croutons, which were made in house were stale. Our waitress was not very knowledgeable about the menu. i wanted Pimento cheese, but not with the pork and she thought the pork was in all the pimento, turns out it wasn't; however, she failed to come back to the table to let me know, hence the salad. My friend got a Chicken Sandwich with fries, a side of pimento cheese (without pork) a pickle and a pickled okra and her meal was $9. Seems a little unfairly priced as i know lettuce is cheaper than chicken-- i am not sure if i will try again or not. Seem like with a name like Root Cellar that they would have more vegetarian food or at least one entree that is completely vegetarian. read more

Atmosphere is nice and staff are very friendly. I had the 8 oz fillet mug on and it was cooked just the way I like it. Seasoned well, required no steak sauce to cover a poorly cooked piece of meat. I heard they are getting a new head chef soon so I really hope this changes things, as I love to support a local restraint but this place is terrible. It's so hot in there first of all and the food is mediocre. I've been there twice and I'm not sure why I went back the second time. This last time I got flavorless salmon and unseasoned collards. I don't think there was any salt on the collards, much less any pork. Not good. The cornbread wasn't good, it was undercooked and gooey. Dined at the Root Cellar this past Friday evening with some girlfriends. I was excited to get some good ole country food. The place was packed which looked like a good sign. The waiter was nice but busy. It took a while to get his attention to take our order. I ordered the special which was a pork chop with some type of gravy over it. Side dishes were fried okra and mashed potatoes with brown gravy. My friends both got shrimp and grits. I was so looking forward to my meal, but I was very let down. The pork chop was mostly fat with very little meat. The fried okra was good but room temperature. The mashed potatoes were cold and the brown gravy was not good. I was so let down because I love country cooking but I don't eat it a lot due to trying to stay healthy with my food choices. My friends told me they were not a fan of the shrimp and grits, so it appeared none of us enjoyed our meal. Of course, we stayed a long time catching up and chatting which was nice because the waiter didn't appear to care that we stayed so long. I may go back again when I visit my best friend again just to give it another chance but my first visit was disappointing. read more

Not what we were expecting. The Upscale vibe ultimately was a slightly nicer Lizard's Thicket on the inside. Super greasy appetizer (southern egg rolls) followed by burnt salmon (did NOT order blackened...) and strange tasting shrimp and grits left us feeling disappointed. I am not one to often review a restaurant, but the root cellar is a below average restaurant in which I had an extremely negative experience at. The menu itself looks amazing with a variety of options. However, the food is the complete opposite of amazing. Throughout our dinning experience, we experienced multiple problems. First, the waitress nor the cooking staff knew which foods on the menu contained gluten. Her response was "the usual like salad, brussel sprouts, stuff like that." I personally ordered chopped steak with sautéed mushrooms and caramelized onions, which I assumed to be similar to a deconstructed philly cheese steak. Ten minutes after ordering, the waitress proceeds to tell me that they are out of mushrooms and I could not change my order. When I received my meal, it was a giant slab of hamburger meat with mushrooms that they miraculously found. Where did these mushrooms come from? My friend ordered a simple spinach salad that came with two toppings. They forgot one of the toppings on the salad, which took another five minutes to receive. My boyfriend ordered the salmon with brussel sprouts. The salmon was extremely over cooked while the brussel sprouts were extremely undercooked (there was four total). While these various issues were being solved, one member of our party did not receive their food at all. He received his food 15 minutes later. At this point, we had all finished our entire meals. The restaurant did not offer to compensate his individual bill. In all, this was an awful experience and I never plan on going back. If you enjoy below average food, this is the place for you. read more

Sorry, Lexington. I had high hopes. With a name like this, don't you think you'd get high quality, fresh, organic food? No, no, and nope. We waited an hour for our food after ordering. My Chardonnay was warm. My son had to ask for more pimento cheese for his burger since he couldn't find it on his sandwich. They ran out of root vegetables and pink lemonade. The food was mediocre, the service was slow- very slow. I hope things improve with time. Really, we need good local restaurants in Lexington-not Lizard's Thicket and not Rush's. Our first experience with The Root Cellar was memorable. We loved it!!! The fried okra and onion rings as an appetizer were superb - I have never seen so much fried okra - the portions were huge. Onion rings among the best I have had. The fried chicken with white gravy was out of this world - tasty and tender! The hamburger steak was cooked perfectly - large and flavorable. Loaded baked potatoes were perfect. We were too satisfied to try dessert. The prices were medium to high but well worth every dime. This is definitely one of our favorite restaurants. Foyer and front of restaurant was very smokey due to cooking and the rest of establishment was hot. It is a smaller space and gets crowded and loud with uncomfortable seating. My husband and I decided to try the new local restaurant on a Wednesday night to avoid the usual weekend crowd and were surprised to see it full of customers at 7:00. The service was great and the food delicious. I had the chicken livers (hot, crispy and not over-cooked), Brussel sprouts ( good but a little bland for my taste) and roasted root veggies (fabulous with lots of fresh herbs). My husband tried the blackened salmon (slightly over-cooked but still tasty), Brussel sprouts and side salad (fresh greens and perfect size). The atmosphere is friendly but the noise level was fairly loud, probably because the floors are wood. I would recommend Root Cellar to our Lexington friends and plan to go there often. read more

Southern food with a spin. Reminded me of Grandma dishes with flair. Really great food and great service. Fair selection of wines and beer. The wait was about 20 minutes which wasn't too bad for the experience. I've definitely waited longer for worse experiences. The only reason I didn't give it five stars was because they have some kinks to work out. They are brand new this year (2016) but are doing an awesome job. I will definitely be back. read more

The salads were good! My boyfriend got the double cut pork chop priced at $23 and it wasnt super dry but it was dry and not very flavorful definitely over priced. I got the buttermilk fried chicken with grits and white gravy. The chicken was dry, and grits were very plain. The gravy was the only thing that added a little saltiness and flavor and our cornbread was hard and cold our tab was $50 and we were very disappointed! The southern egg rolls were the only thing we got that were definetly worth their price DELICIOUS! They are just starting out so maybe they'll figure out their kitchen staff. read more
